Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the association between social anxiety and adherence to diabetes self-care and quality of life and to determine the effects of fear of hypoglycemia on these associations in adolescents with type 1 diabetes. It is hypothesized that (1) social anxiety will be negatively associated with adherence and quality of life and (2) that fear of hypoglycemia will mediate this relationship. It is also hypothesized that (3) girls will have higher social anxiety than boys.

Protein kinases have high structural plasticity: their structure can change significantly, depending on what ligands are bound to them. Rigid-protein docking methods are not capable of describing such effects. Here, we present a new flexible-ligand flexible-protein docking model in which the protein can adopt conformations between two extremes observed experimentally.

We have developed a method to improve the description of solute cavity defined by the interlocking-sphere model for continuum-solvent electrostatics calculations. Many models choose atomic radii from a finite set of atom types or uses an even smaller set developed by Bondi [J. Phys.

The present study examined current and lifetime psychiatric morbidity, chest pain, and health care utilization in 229 patients with noncardiac chest pain (NCCP), angina-like pain in the absence of cardiac etiology. Diagnostic interview findings based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) revealed a psychiatrically heterogeneous sample of whom 44% had a current Axis I psychiatric disorder.

As technology progresses, college instructors are presented with the availability of new and exciting pedagogical methods. Though the use of videos is not new, their use is becoming increasingly simplified and relevant to popular culture. This conceptual paper presents a theoretical rationale for the use of videos as a teaching and learning tool in the infusion of aging content into the social work curriculum, provides in-class strategies with a case example, and discusses the use of videos outside of class.

Quite a few reviews on molecular docking have already appeared. This mini-review focuses on methods that incorporate protein flexibility in docking rather than those that treat protein targets as rigid molecules. This is still a challenging problem but there are encouraging recent advances.

By docking flexible balanol to a rigid model of protein kinase A (PKA), we found that a new simulated annealing protocol termed disrupted velocity simulated annealing (DIVE-SA) outperformed the replica-exchange method and the traditional simulated annealing method in identifying the correct docking pose. In this protocol, the atomic velocities were reassigned periodically to encourage the system to sample a large conformational space. We also found that scaling potential energy surface to reduce structural transition barriers could further facilitate docking.

This article uses data from the Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) Demonstration Project (N = 326) to examine older adults' utilization of mental health services. This study is guided by the behavioral model of health service utilization and helps to fill gaps in the literature by including religious affiliation, religiosity, and interaction terms as variables in regression models. These variables are important, as religion is more important in the lives of older adults than in the lives of their younger counterparts.

We have combined ultrasoft pseudopotential density functional theory utilizing plane wave basis with a Poisson-Boltzmann/solvent-accessible surface area (PB/SA) model to calculate the solvation free energy of small neutral organic compounds in water. The solute charge density obtained from density functional theory was directly used in solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation to obtain the reaction field. The polarized electronic wave function of the solute in the solvent was solved by including the reaction field in the density functional Hamiltonian.

The relations among anxiety sensitivity, perceived control, and agoraphobia were examined in 239 patients diagnosed with panic disorder (PD). Most patients exhibited agoraphobia accompanying their PD (98% situational avoidance; 90% experiential avoidance; and 80% endorsed interoceptive fear and avoidance). Anxiety sensitivity and perceived emotional control were associated with agoraphobia, and perceived threat control was found to moderate the relationship between anxiety sensitivity and agoraphobia.

Objective: To examine the relations among anxiety, psychosocial stress, and headache and abdominal pain complaints within the context of the Biobehavioral Model of Pediatric Pain.
Methods: Adolescents from urban schools serving a predominantly African-American population completed measures of pain, anxiety, witnessing violence, problem situations, and victimization at the end of the seventh grade (N = 502) and 6 months later (longitudinal N = 289).
Results: A high prevalence of weekly headaches (40%) and abdominal pain (36%) was reported.

Purpose: The Comparison of Overnight Lens Modalities (COLM) Study is a controlled, randomized, clinical pilot study to determine the sample size required to perform a multicenter clinical trial comparing Paragon CRT lenses with CIBA Vision Focus NIGHT and DAY 30-day continuous-wear silicone hydrogel lenses.
Methods: Twenty subjects were enrolled in the study. Eighteen subjects, 8 CRT and 10 Focus NIGHT and DAY lens wearers, completed the 3-month study.

Differences in dispersal abilities have been implicated for causing disparate evolutionary patterns between Columbicola and Physconelloides lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera). However, no study has documented straggling (when lice are found on atypical hosts) rates within these lineages. We used the fact that the Galapagos Hawk, Buteo galapagoensis (Gould) (Falconiformes) feeds on the Galapagos Dove Zenaida galapagoensis Gould (Columbiformes) within an ecologically simplified setting.

Recently, there have been attempts to determine empirically the number and nature of variables comprising the complicated-grief syndrome. The present research addresses one such procedure for defining these variables.

As reform activities continue to restructure health care, traditional roles of nurses are being reshaped and redefined. Many nurses displaced by organizational downsizing are seeking employment "outside of the hospital walls," including home care practice. Novice home care nurses may lack confidence in their ability to care for clients in the home.

Acute care facilities are no longer viewed as the center of the health care network. Efforts to reduce hospital length of stay will continue to spur the growth of care delivered in homes. With the downsizing of many hospitals, the need for nurses in acute care settings will decline.
