The utmost goal of selecting an RNA-Seq alignment software is to perform accurate alignments with a robust algorithm, which is capable of detecting the various intricacies underlying read-mapping procedures and beyond. Most alignment software tools are typically pre-tuned with human or prokaryotic data, and therefore may not be suitable for applications to other organisms, such as plants. The rapidly growing plant RNA-Seq databases call for the assessment of the alignment tools on curated plant data, which will aid the calibration of these tools for applications to plant transcriptomic data.

Background: The optimal target post-procedure stenosis after percutaneous angioplasty and stent placement (PTAS) for intracranial stenosis is unknown. We determined the effect of post-procedure stenosis after intracranial PTAS on subsequent clinical events in patients with severe symptomatic intracranial stenosis.

Background Onabotulinum toxin A (OnA) is a well-tolerated and effective treatment for chronic migraine (CM). However, based on research indications that incobotulinum toxin A (InA) would be equally effective, a Veterans Health Administration medical center mandated a two-year trial of InA as a more cost-effective alternative to OnA. Although InA is used for many similar indications as OnA, it is not Food and Drug Administration-approved for treating CM, and complications occurred in several patients with CM following this treatment change.

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is a rare inherited skin disease characterized by defects in type VII collagen leading to a range of fibrotic pathologies resulting from skin fragility, aberrant wound healing, and altered dermal fibroblast physiology. Using a novel in vitro model of fibrosis based on endogenously produced extracellular matrix, we screened an FDA-approved compound library and identified antivirals as a class of drug not previously associated with anti-fibrotic action. Preclinical validation of our lead hit, daclatasvir, in a mouse model of RDEB demonstrated significant improvement in fibrosis as well as overall quality of life with increased survival, weight gain and activity, and a decrease in pruritus-induced hair loss.

Purpose: While the National Institutes of Health and American Medical Association recommend patient education materials (PEMs) should be written at the sixth-grade reading level or below, many patient education materials related to traumatic orthopaedic injuries do not meet these recommendations. The purpose of this study is to create a standardised method for enhancing the readability of trauma-related orthopaedic PEMs by reducing the use of ≥ three syllable words and reducing the use of sentences >15 words in length. We hypothesise that applying this standardized method will significantly improve the objective readability of orthopaedic trauma PEMs.

Background: The vascular endothelium serves as a semi-selective permeable barrier as a conduit for transport of fluid, solutes, and various cell populations between the vessel lumen and tissues. The endothelium thus has a dynamic role in the regulation of coagulation, immune system, lipid and electrolyte transport, as well as neurohumoral influences on vascular tone and end-organ injury to tissues such as the heart and kidney.

Summary: Within this framework, pharmacologic strategies for heart and kidney diseases including blood pressure, glycemic control, and lipid reduction provide significant risk reduction, yet certain populations are at risk for substantial residual risk for disease progression and treatment resistance and often have unwanted off-target effects leaving the need for adjunct, alternative targeted therapies.
