Cutis verticis gyrata (CVG) is a rare benign neurocutaneous condition marked by thickened scalp folds resembling cerebral gyri and sulci. It has been classified into primary essential, primary non-essential, and secondary types. The primary essential type is idiopathic, and the primary non-essential type may be associated with neurological or ophthalmological complications.

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays a crucial role in governing essential cellular functions such as growth, proliferation, and survival. Previously, we observed increased vulnerability to bacterial (Staphylococcus aureus) endophthalmitis in global AMPKα1 knockout mice. In this study, we investigated the specific involvement of AMPKα1 in myeloid cells using LysMCre;AMPKα1fl mice.

Introduction: The concept of medical student coachability, adapted from athletics and business management, offers a framework for characterizing students' roles as clinical learners. We defined coachability as effectively seeking, receiving, and using feedback-even negative feedback-to change behavior and reach learning goals. To facilitate success in our clinical clerkships, we sought to empower preclerkship students' capacity to be coached.

Trans-kingdom interactions between cells play pivotal roles in shaping intricate ecological and biological networks. However, our grasp of these interactions remains incomplete. Specifically, the vast phylogenetic spectrum of microorganisms capable of interacting with a given host cell type remains obscure, primarily due to the absence of efficient, high-throughput, single-cell resolution systems that can rapidly decipher these interactions.

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated that access to robotic surgery is influenced by socioeconomic factors, including insurance status. The 2010 Affordable Care Act established an avenue for states to expand Medicaid coverage, which has increased access to surgical care for many conditions. We hypothesized that socioeconomic disparities in access to robotic repair of non-elective emergency general surgery (EGS) hernias are less prevalent in California, a Medicaid expansion state, compared to Florida, which has not adopted Medicaid expansion.

Pathology residency training has been criticized for having too little opportunities for resident autonomy. As graduate medical education moves to competency-based models measuring competency and giving autonomy for specific tasks will be important. To determine how much autonomy residents are currently granted we surveyed pathology residency directors with regard to a list of usual pathology tasks and compared responses with those of a similar survey from 2018.

Pediatric Long COVID has been associated with a wide variety of symptoms, conditions, and organ systems, but distinct clinical presentations, or subphenotypes, are still being elucidated. In this exploratory analysis, we identified a cohort of pediatric (age <21) patients with evidence of Long COVID and no pre-existing complex chronic conditions using electronic health record data from 38 institutions and used an unsupervised machine learning-based approach to identify subphenotypes. Our method, an extension of the Phe2Vec algorithm, uses tens of thousands of clinical concepts from multiple domains to represent patients' clinical histories to then identify groups of patients with similar presentations.

In mammalian females, the transition from dormancy in primordial follicles to follicular development is critical for maintaining ovarian function and reproductive longevity. In mice, the quiescent primary oocyte of the primordial follicle contains a Balbiani body (B-body), an organelle aggregate comprised of a spherical structure of Golgi complexes. Here we show that the structure of the B-body is maintained by microtubules and actin.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears in National Football League (NFL) players are devastating injuries that take nearly a year to recover. Players that do return to sport have worse overall performance compared to pre-ACL tear. NFL players typically play regular season games on Sunday with the next game played on the following Sunday, allowing for 6 days between games.

Bladder cancer is a leading cancer type in men. The complexity of treatment in late-stage bladder cancer after systemic spread through the lymphatic system highlights the importance of modulating disease-free progression as early as possible in cancer staging. With current therapies relying on previous standards, such as platinum-based chemotherapeutics and immunomodulation with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin, researchers, and clinicians are looking for targeted therapies to stop bladder cancer at its source early in progression.

Kenneth Keown, MD, was a forward-thinking anesthesiologist who developed techniques to allow the safe practice of cardiac anesthesia and opened the door for the future development of more complex intracardiac surgical procedures. His early successful protocols for cardiac anesthesiology and his wide-reaching education of others on these methods earned him the designation of "the grand old man of anesthesia for inside-the-heart surgery" at a young age. His contributions also extended to groundbreaking research in hypothermia, lidocaine uses as an antiarrhythmic, and advocacy for anesthesiology as a specialty.

Background: Mammographic breast density (MBD) is a strong risk factor and an intermediate phenotype for breast cancer, yet there are limited studies on how environmental pollutants are associated with MBD.
Objective: We investigated associations of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) levels with measures of MBD and evaluated if early life factors modified any associations.
Methods: Metabolon performed metabolomics analysis using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography/tandem accurate mass spectrometry in fasting blood from 705 premenopausal women completing their annual screening mammogram in St.

Multiligament knee injuries (MLKIs) represent a broad spectrum of pathology with potentially devastating consequences. Currently, disagreement in the terminology, diagnosis and treatment of these injuries limits clinical care and research. This study aimed to develop consensus on the nomenclature, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation strategies for patients with MLKI, while identifying important research priorities for further study.

Background: Osteochondral allograft transplantation (OCAT) can be performed without the need for blood-type matching or anti-rejection medications. However, other donor-recipient mismatch variables could influence outcomes. Therefore, it is critical to examine the impacts of sex and age mismatching on functional OCA survival.

Background: While morbid obesity has been associated with increased complication risk in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA), limited evidence is available to attribute decreased surgical complication rates with body mass index (BMI) reduction.
Methods: We retrospectively assessed 464 unilateral TKAs performed in morbidly obese patients, including 158 extremely obese (BMI ≥ 45) and 306 severely obese patients (BMI 40 to 44.9).

Interleukin-22, discovered in the year of 2000, is a pleiotropic Th17 cytokine from the IL-10 family of cytokines. IL-22 signals through the type 2 cytokine receptor complex IL-22R and predominantly activates STAT3. This pathway leads to the transcription of several different types of genes, giving IL-22 context-specific functions ranging from inducing antimicrobial peptide expression to target cell proliferation.
