Lean body mass (LBM), which is fat free body mass, can be used as an index of nutritional status. We evaluated three techniques for LBM estimation, including dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), creatinine kinetics (CrKin), and bioimpedance (BI) in 10 patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Two different formulae were applied for BI LBM estimation, Segal (S) and Deurenberg (D).

High-density angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) binding is present in heart valve leaflets and the fibrous tissue that appears in the rat myocardium after either chronic administration of angiotensin II (AngII) or after myocardial infarction. This suggests that connective tissue ACE is independent of circulating AngII and that ACE may be an integral component of normal and pathologic tissue repair. To address this possibility the present study was undertaken.

Induction of many primary-response genes by a variety of stimuli occurs in a transient manner. The precise mechanism responsible for these transient kinetics is not completely understood. We report here that the orphan nuclear receptor, TIS1, which is a potent sequence-specific transcription factor, was transiently induced by the adrenergic agonist isoprenaline in the C2C12 skeletal-muscle cell line.

Background: The demyelination process has been proven to be an important factor contributing to long-term sensory and motor impairments after spinal cord injury (SCI). The loss of myelin promotes exposure of K+ channels in internodal region of the damaged myelinated axons leading to K+ efflux into the neurons with subsequent blockage of action potentials. The potassium channel blocker 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) has been effective in restoring some sensory and motor impairment in incomplete SCI patients.

One of the earliest cellular responses to growth factors is the rapid induction of primary response genes. One group of such genes was originally isolated as tetradecanoyl phorbol acetate (TPA) inducible sequences (TIS genes) from mouse 3T3 cells. Proteins encoded by the TIS genes include two transcription factors: TIS8 (also known as egr1/NGFIA/zif268) and TIS1 (also known as NGFIB/nur77/N10).

Article Synopsis
  • The conventional interpretation of hepatic indicator dilution assumes all hepatocytes function at the same rate, but this can lead to incorrect estimations when there's variation in liver cell structures and permeability.
  • The study highlights this issue by analyzing data from perfused rat livers, showing that significant differences in liver regions can skew results, particularly when permeability varies greatly.
  • The findings stress that relying solely on outflow curves can mask these variances, potentially leading to both quantitative and qualitative errors in understanding liver performance.

The tonotopic map in the embryonic chicken cochlea.

Hear Res

February 1995

Department of Surgery, School of Medicine, University of Missouri-Columbia 65212, USA.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the tonotopic map in the chicken cochlea at 19 days of incubation (E19) by obtaining characteristic frequencies (CFs) for primary afferents, labeling the characterized neurons, and documenting their projections to the papilla. The lowest and highest CFs recorded were 188 and 1623 Hz respectively. The embryonic tonotopic map coincided with maps reported for post-hatch chicks.

Aerosol administration of antibiotics.

Respiration

July 1995

Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, University of Missouri-Columbia 65212, USA.

Aerosol administration of antibiotics is an attractive approach to the treatment of the recurrent respiratory infections experienced by patients suffering from cystic fibrosis (CF). Through aerosol administration, drugs can, theoretically, be delivered directly to the target site of infection, i.e.

The gene organization has been determined for an 8-kb portion of the Streptomyces coelicolor chromosome close to the origin of DNA replication (oriC). Hybridization and DNA sequence analyses revealed the presence of five open reading frames (ORFs) oriented in the same direction as the proximal dnaA and dnaN genes. The deduced products of three of the ORFs have been identified as the S.

A nucleotide sequence of 7 kb is reported, encompassing two bleomycin-resistance (BmR-encoding) genes and five other open reading frames (ORFs) from the Bm-producing organism Streptomyces verticillus ATCC 15003. The deduced ORFs, in sequence order, encode for (i) a protein homologous to an amino-acid dioxygenase; (ii) BlmA, the BmR-binding protein described by Sugiyama et al. [Gene 151 (1994) 11-16]; (iii) a product containing three copies of a sequence homologous to the ankyrin repeat; (iv) a product lacking homology to any of the sequences in the Protein Identification Resource database (PIR), release 37; (v) BlmB, the BmR acetyltransferase described by Sugiyama et al.

Complete opacification on chest radiographs may be due to collapse of the lung, consolidation, massive pleural effusion, empyema, hemothorax, chylothorax, fibrothorax, and other causes. We report a case of complete opacification of the hemithorax produced by large cell lymphoma, a previously unreported cause of this finding. Diagnosis was complicated by the CT finding of replacement of the lung parenchyma by a soft-tissue mass with an associated small pleural effusion, while bronchoscopy failed to reveal any major airway obstruction.

Background: A previous preterm delivery is a risk factor for preterm delivery in a subsequent pregnancy. We tested the hypothesis that evidence of inflammation on a Papanicolaou smear obtained during pregnancy is a risk factor for preterm delivery for women with a history of preterm delivery.

Methods: We studied women who had two singleton deliveries at a university hospital during an 8-year period.

Objective: The aim was to determine angiotensin II receptor binding and its relationship to angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) binding and fibrous tissue formation in the rat heart.

Methods: A model of tissue repair (pericardiotomy and myocardial infarction with left coronary artery ligation) was used together with the following: quantitative in vitro autoradiography to determine angiotensin II receptor (125I[Sar1, Ile8]AngII) and ACE (125I-351A) binding densities. Angiotensin II receptor subtype was determined using an AT1 receptor antagonist (DuP753, losartan) and an AT2 receptor antagonist (PD123177).

An amplifiable DNA region from the Mycoplasma hyorhinis genome.

J Bacteriol

October 1994

Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine, University of Missouri--Columbia 65212.

A novel amplifiable genomic region that displays variability in the number of tandem copies of a 1,368-bp DNA sequence (designated RS-2) was discovered among individual clonal derivatives within Mycoplasma hyorhinis broth-grown cell populations. Clonal isolates representing variant subpopulations from the original broth culture were of a single size variant, and although continued culture under a variety of growth conditions did not result in further amplification of RS-2, evidence for deletion events which reduced RS-2 copy number, presumably by homologous recombination, was obtained. RS-2 homologous sequences were identified in all M.

Sinclair swine display cutaneous melanoma lesions and develop a generalized depigmentation subsequent to tumor regression. Sinclair swine represent a valuable animal model to study the factors influencing the development of melanoma and also the factors which lead to the development of vitiligo. Therefore, information obtained in studies of Sinclair swine should facilitate our understanding of the mechanisms by which melanoma and vitiligo develop and provide us with possible therapeutic treatments for these human diseases.

Functional outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is thought to be dependent upon effective social support and avoidance of depressive episodes. Research indicates that post-injury changes often occur in the family's functioning, hence impacting the family's ability to provide the needed social support. Social support, in turn, has been hypothesized to work as a buffer between significant life event and levels of depressive symptoms.
