Background: Cigarette smoking has been associated with incident heart failure (HF). However, the association between cigarette smoking and smoking cessation with HF subtypes has not been well elucidated, particularly among Black people.
Methods And Results: We investigated 4189 (never smoker n=2934, former smoker n=761, current smoker n=464) Black participants (mean age 54 years, 64% women) without a history of HF or coronary heart disease at baseline in the Jackson Heart Study.

Background: White matter hyperintensities (WMH) and their progression are associated with risk of dementia and stroke, so are an important target for clinical trials. The cost of broad magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) screening to identify eligible individuals, however, limits the feasibility of designing clinical trials targeting WMH. A low-cost retinal or clinical screening measure before MRI could reduce recruitment costs versus an MRI-only screening design in a hypothetical clinical trial.

Background: Sesn2 (Sestrin2) is a stress-induced protein that provides protective effects during myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury, while endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress may be a pivotal mediator of I/R injury. The goal of this study was to determine whether Sesn2-mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) signaling regulates ER stress during myocardial I/R.
Methods And Results: In vivo cardiac I/R was induced by ligation and subsequent release of the left anterior descending coronary artery in wild-type (WT) and cardiac-specific Sesn2 knockout (Sesn2) mice.

Introduction: Generation Z learners are entering emergency medicine (EM) residency training, bringing unique learning preferences that influence their engagement with residency education. To optimally teach and motivate this incoming generation of learners, EM educators must understand and adapt to the changing instructional landscape.
Methodology: The Simulation Leaders Advancing the Next Generation in Emergency Medicine (SLANG-EM) Workgroup was created to identify effective educational strategies for Generation Z learners entering EM.
Background: We examined the association of multilevel social determinants of health with incident apparent treatment-resistant hypertension (aTRH).
Methods And Results: We analyzed data from 2774 White and 2257 Black US adults from the REGARDS (Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke) study taking antihypertensive medication without aTRH at baseline to estimate the association of social determinants of health with incident aTRH. Selection of social determinants of health was guided by the Healthy People 2030 domains of education, economic stability, social context, neighborhood environment, and health care access.

The leading cause of death among patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is cardiovascular disease. A significant percentage of MASLD patients develop heart failure driven by functional and structural alterations in the heart. Previously, we observed cardiac dysfunction in hepatocyte-specific peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha knockout ( ), a mouse model that exhibits hepatic steatosis independent of obesity and insulin resistance.

Background: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a significant global public health problem accounting for 15% to 20% of all deaths. A great majority of SCD is associated with coronary heart disease, which may first be detected at autopsy. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) is a simple, noninvasive measure of subclinical atherosclerosis.

A recent study demonstrated mineralocorticoid receptor-related hypertension is associated with RhoA/Rho-associated kinase/MYPT1 signaling upregulation in smooth muscle cells. Our purpose is to investigate the effect of MYPT2 on cardiac function and fibrosis in mineralocorticoid receptor-related hypertension.

The Aging and Cognitive Health Evaluation in Elders (ACHIEVE) study is a multicenter randomized control trial (partially nested within the infrastructure of an observational cohort study, the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities [ARIC] study) to determine the efficacy of best-practice hearing treatment to reduce cognitive decline over 3 years. The goal of this paper is to describe the recruitment process and baseline results.

Low birth weight contributes to high risk of cardiovascular disorders later in life. Women with preeclampsia have activated B cells producing agonistic autoantibodies to AT1-AA (angiotensin II type I receptor).

Background: Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a noninvasive measure of arterial stiffness and predictor of cardiovascular disease. However, the association between PWV and vascular calcification across different vascular beds has not been fully investigated. This study aimed to quantify the association between PWV and multiterritory calcification and to explore whether PWV can identify individuals with vascular calcification beyond traditional risk factors.

We aimed to evaluate SU+CVD-related deaths in the United States using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging, Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database.
Methods And Results: The Multiple Cause-of-Death Public Use record death certificates were used to identify deaths related to both SU and CVD.

Fetal meconium periorchitis (MPO) is rare prenatal diagnosis associated with meconium peritonitis. The prenatal ultrasound finding consists of an enlarged fetal scrotum with echogenic fluid and debris. In this report, we describe a case in which a prenatal diagnosis of MPO was accurately made at 32 weeks of gestation.

This study aims to evaluate efficacy and adherence of the virtual world-based CR program compared with center-based CR within a community-informed, implementation science framework.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) disproportionately affects Black adults. Greater social networks (SNs), or social connectedness, may lower the risk of CVD events. This study determined the association of SNs and incident CVD and tested mediation by depressive symptoms, hypertension control, and diabetes control.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of a hands-on simulation-based course with emphasis on procedural techniques, clinical reasoning, and communication skills developed to improve junior Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) residents' preparedness in managing otolaryngologic emergencies.
Methods: Junior OHNS residents and faculty from residency programs in California, Nevada, and Arizona participated in this workshop in 2020 and 2021. The stations featured airway management techniques, ultrasound-guided needle aspiration, nasoseptal hematoma evacuation, and facial fracture repair using various models and cadavers.

Background: This case report is of a patient with psychosis secondary to thyrotoxicosis that persisted and reemerged after definitive treatment of thyroidectomy, which is a unique occurrence in the literature.
Case Presentation: This patient is a male between 30 and 35 years of age with a history of Graves Disease and no past psychiatric history who was admitted to the hospital due to psychosis secondary to thyrotoxicosis. The thyrotoxicosis was treated with surgical removal, but the psychotic symptoms persisted after surgery and normalization of standard thyroid functional measures.
