Article Synopsis
  • - The study re-analyzed genetic data from COVID-19 patients and found that genes related to eicosanoid synthesis were more active in patients with severe cases, particularly in goblet cells of the nasopharynx.
  • - Researchers compared lipid metabolites in infected vs. uninfected individuals and discovered higher levels of certain lipids like Arachidonic Acid (AA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) in COVID-19 patients, which correlated with the severity of the disease.
  • - The findings suggest a link between eicosanoid gene expression in the nasopharynx, increased serum inflammatory lipids, and the activation of DNA damage pathways in white blood cells, indicating a potential mechanism influencing the severity of COVID

Article Synopsis
  • Phlegmasia alba dolens is a rare condition linked to significant blood clots in the iliofemoral veins, which can also occur due to clotted inferior vena cava filters.
  • A 39-year-old patient with a history of protein S deficiency and prior inferior vena cava filter placement experienced severe pain and swelling in both legs, revealing extensive deep vein thromboses.
  • After confirming the blockage caused by the filter, a staged endovascular treatment including filter removal and thrombectomy improved the patient's condition, allowing for discharge with anticoagulation therapy.

Hypertensive individuals taking anti-hypertensive drugs from renin-angiotensin system inhibitors may exhibit a more severe evolution of the disease when contracting the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19 disease) due to potential increases in ACE2 expression. The study investigated ACE1 and ACE2 axes and hydroxychloroquine in the lungs and adipose tissue of male and female normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). SHRs were treated with losartan (10 mg/kg/day) or captopril (10 mg/kg/day) for 14 days or 7 days with hydroxychloroquine (200 mg/kg/day) in drinking water.

MRI free water as a biomarker for cognitive performance: Validation in the MarkVCID consortium.

Alzheimers Dement (Amst)

December 2022

The Mind Research Network Albuquerque New Mexico Albuquerque New Mexico USA.

Introduction: To evaluate the clinical validity of free water (FW), a diffusion tensor imaging-based biomarker kit proposed by the MarkVCID consortium, by investigating the association between mean FW (mFW) and executive function.

Methods: Baseline mFW was related to a baseline composite measure of executive function (EFC), adjusting for relevant covariates, in three MarkVCID sub-cohorts, and replicated in five, large, independent legacy cohorts. In addition, we tested whether baseline mFW predicted accelerated EFC score decline (mean follow-up time: 1.

Intracavernosal abscess: An unusual finding during repair of neglected penile fracture.

Urol Case Rep

November 2022

Department of Urology, Cookeville Regional Medical Center, Medical Center Boulevard, Cookeville, TN, 38501, USA.

Penile abscess with involvement of the corpus cavernosum is a relatively rare condition and is typically associated with cavernosography, intracavernosal injections, penile prosthesis, open trauma, priapism, and seeding from a distant infection. Less commonly, it can be seen following penile fracture, particularly in patients with identified risk factors of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus or other immunosuppression. We report a case of a healthy 24-year-old man with a penile abscess discovered during repair of a one-month-old, imaging confirmed, neglected penile fracture.

Background Therapeutic strategies for preventing paradoxical reperfusion injury after myocardial ischemia are limited. We tested whether central nervous system actions of leptin induce important protective effects on cardiac function and metabolism after myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, the role of cardiac sympathetic innervation in mediating these effects, and whether there are major sex differences in the cardioprotective effects of chronic central nervous system leptin infusion. Methods and Results Myocardial I/R was induced by temporary ligation of the left descending coronary artery in male and female Wistar rats instrumented with intracerebroventricular cannula in the lateral ventricle.

Background Reduced physical function, a representative phenotype of aging, has been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, few studies have comprehensively investigated its association with composite and individual CVD outcomes in community-dwelling older adults and its predictive value for CVD beyond traditional risk factors. Methods and Results We studied 5570 participants (mean age 75 [SD 5] years, female 58%, Black 22%) at visit 5 (2011-2013) of the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) study.

Background Religiosity/spirituality is a major coping mechanism for African Americans, but no prior studies have analyzed its association with the American Heart Association Life's Simple 7 (LS7) indicators in this group. Methods and Results This cross-sectional study using Jackson Heart Study (JHS) data examined relationships between religiosity (religious attendance, private prayer, religious coping) and spirituality (theistic, nontheistic, total) with LS7 individual components (eg, physical activity, diet, smoking, blood pressure) and composite score among African Americans. Multivariable logistic regression assessed the odds of achieving intermediate/ideal (versus poor) LS7 levels adjusted for sociodemographic, behavioral, and biomedical factors.

Background Whether coronary artery disease (CAD) is a significant risk factor for heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is unclear. Methods and Results Among 9902 participants in the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) study, we assessed the association of incident CAD with subsequent incident HFpEF (left ventricular ejection fraction [≥50%]) and HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF; left ventricular ejection fraction <50%) using survival models with time-updated variables. We also assessed the extent to which echocardiographic correlates of prevalent CAD account for the relationship between CAD and incident HFpEF.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains a medical anomaly that baffles researchers and physicians alike. The overall phenotypical changes of diastolic function and left ventricular hypertrophy observed in HFpEF are definable; however, the metabolic and molecular alterations that ultimately produce these changes are not well established. Comorbidities such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, as well as general aging, play crucial roles in its development and progression.
