Expression of fatty acid binding proteins in mesenteric adipose tissue.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Minneapolis, MN, USA; Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Minneapolis, MN, USA. Electronic address:

Adipose is a complex tissue comprised of adipocytes, immune cells, endothelial and progenitor stem cells. In humans, there are at least nine defined adipose depots, each containing variable numbers of genetically identified adipocyte clusters suggesting remarkable heterogeneity and potential functionality in each depot with respect to lipid metabolism. Although subcutaneous and visceral depots are commonly analyzed for biochemical and molecular functions, the mesenteric depot has been overlooked yet strongly implicated in lipid mediated immune surveillance.

is an important source of natural β-carotene (containing and isomers) for industrial production. The phytohormone salicylic acid (SA) has been proven to have impacts on the stress resistance of higher plants, but research on microalgae is currently unclear. In this study, the effects of SA on the growth, biochemical composition, antioxidant enzyme activity, key enzymes of β-carotene synthesis, and cis-and trans-isomers of β-carotene in under different salt concentrations were investigated.

Introduction: Parenting programs are widely used to prevent and ameliorate children's emotional and behavioral problems but low levels of engagement undermine intervention effectiveness and reach within and beyond research settings. Technology can provide flexible and cost-effective alternate service-delivery formats for parenting programs, and studies are needed to assess the extent to which parents are willing to engage with digitally assisted formats.

Methods: After Deployment, Adaptive Parenting Tools (ADAPT) is an evidence-based parenting program for military families.

Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant health issue among veterans and poses a substantial risk for pituitary injury. Consensus guidelines recommend that patients who have sustained a TBI should undergo a baseline pituitary hormonal evaluation after the primary brain insult. Patients with abnormal screening test results or with symptoms of hypopituitarism should be referred to endocrinology for a full assessment.

Many psychiatric disorders and associated psychopathology dimensions are related to social cognitive deficits and reduced general cognitive ability. The current study applied a hierarchical, dimensional approach to better understand associations among psychopathology, social cognition, and general cognitive ability. Data were collected from two samples (n = 653), including psychosis-spectrum patients, their first-degree relatives, and individuals from community sources.

N-Methylation of the peptide backbone confers pharmacologically beneficial characteristics to peptides that include greater membrane permeability and resistance to proteolytic degradation. The borosin family of ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides offer a post-translational route to install amide backbone α-N-methylations. Previous work has elucidated the substrate scope and engineering potential of two examples of type I borosins, which feature autocatalytic precursors that encode N-methyltransferases that methylate their own C-termini in trans.

Continuous cropping decreases soil nutrients and destroys microbial community structure, so the development of eco-friendly and effective biofertilizers is necessary under present conditions. In this study, the preserving microalgal strain sp. (H) was firstly selected to be combined with agroforestry waste (shell powder, straw fermentation liquid) and the agroforestry microorganism sp.

The average prices of foods vary across cuisines but do these differences reflect the value people assign to different cuisines or how much they are willing to pay? Across four preregistered randomized experiments (total N=1,083), we manipulated the cuisine-of-origin (French, Thai) and authenticity (low, high) descriptions for analogous dishes across cuisines (e.g., two seafood stews: French bouillabaisse and Thai kaeng som) and restaurant review pages in Studies 2-4.

University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Department of Plant Pathology, 1991 Upper Buford circle, 495 Borlaug Hall, Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States, 55108;

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is an herbaceous perennial in the Zingiberaceae family grown primarily in tropical to subtropical biomes as a culinary spice, a traditional medicine, and a landscaping plant. While ginger grows at soil temperatures above 20°C, several farmers in the upper Midwestern US farmers grows short-season ginger in high tunnels. In 2023 and 2024, growers in southeastern Minnesota reported a new disease of ginger.

Background: Previous research has demonstrated that placebo induction manipulations can reduce an individual's pain through non-specific mechanisms, such as expectancy manipulations. However, despite robust research characterizing these effects, individual differences in predicting placebo analgesic responses are not well understood.

Methods: Fifty-four healthy pain-free adults over 18 (M=22.

Objectives: Research supports cognitive behavioral therapies for nightmares (CBT-N) in adults. However, the nuances of implementation and unstandardized nomenclature for treatment components has created confusion in the field. To provide clarification, an expert consensus panel convened to review treatment manual components and to develop guidelines for the standardized implementation and terminology of CBT-N.

Background: Consistent evidence shows stigma impedes healthcare access in people living with HIV (PLWH) and men who have sex with men (MSM). We evaluated the impact of a stigma reduction training for providers whose design was informed by direct observation of their clinical behaviors obtained through visits by incognito standardized patient (SP).

Setting: We conducted this study in in sexually transmitted infection clinics in Guangzhou, China.

As a potential corridor connecting Southwest Asia with western and northern Europe, the Armenian Highlands and southern Caucasus hold great potential for increasing our understanding of Upper Paleolithic behavioral and cultural variability. However, given the dearth of Upper Paleolithic sites, we lack the data necessary to answer basic questions regarding the timing and nature of the Upper Paleolithic in this region. Solak-1 is an open-air site located along the upper Hrazdan Valley (1635 m above sea level) in central Armenia.

Purpose: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a life-altering event that can abruptly and drastically derail an individual's expected life trajectory. While some adults who have sustained a TBI go on to make a full recovery, many live with persisting disability many years postinjury. Helping patients adjust to and flourish with disability that may persist should be as much a part of rehabilitative practice as addressing impairment, activity, and participation-level changes after TBI.

Influence of Photoemission Geometry on Timing and Efficiency in 4D Ultrafast Electron Microscopy.

Chemphyschem

January 2025

University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, 421 Washington Avenue SE, 55455, Minneapolis, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Broader adoption of 4D ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM) for the study of chemical, materials, and quantum systems is being driven by development of new instruments as well as continuous improvement and characterization of existing technologies. Perhaps owing to the still-high barrier to entry, the full range of capabilities of laser-driven 4D UEM instruments has yet to be established, particularly when operated at extremely low beam currents (~fA). Accordingly, with an eye on beam stability, we have conducted particle tracing simulations of unconventional off-axis photoemission geometries in a UEM equipped with a thermionic-emission gun.

As the COVID-19 pandemic recedes, SARS-CoV-2 vaccination is crucial for reducing transmission and severity, but vaccine hesitancy remains a challenge. The study explored community actions and initiatives addressing vaccine hesitancy among Somali immigrant communities in cities in the Upper Midwest, USA, and Western Norway, focusing on trust factors and comparing members of the Somali diaspora in two distinct social and cultural contexts. Qualitative collective case studies were conducted, involving 14 semi-structured interviews with key informants from the Upper Midwest and Western Norway knowledgeable about initiatives designed to address SARS-CoV-2 vaccine hesitancy.
