Social media has become an increasingly important way to seek and share experiences, support, knowledge, and advice during the COVID-19 pandemic. Reddit, a pseudonymous social media platform, was one way that young people interacted during the pandemic. Our study goals were two-fold: (1) to categorize information sought and provided by users of r/saplings, a subreddit devoted to cannabis use and is often used by young people, and (2) to examine if conversations changed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Diverse responses of surface biogeophysical parameters to accelerated development and senescence of vegetation on the Mongolian Plateau.

Vegetation dynamics is essential for characterizing surface biogeophysical parameters. Speeds of vegetation development and senescence are well documented, however, the effects of vegetation growth rates on surface parameters during different growth stages remains unclear. By using such methods as trend analyses and correlation analyses, this study examines the variations and interactive relationships of leaf area index (LAI) and surface parameters including Albedo, evapotranspiration (ET), and land surface temperature (LST), derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), during the intra-growing season (April-October, GS) on the Mongolian Plateau (MP).

Agreement between retrospective and prospective assessments of childhood abuse revisited.

A recent meta-analytic review demonstrated that retrospective assessments of childhood abuse acquired during adulthood - typically via self-report - demonstrate weak agreement with assessments of maltreatment gathered prospectively. The current report builds on prior findings by investigating the agreement of prospectively documented abuse from birth to age 17.5 years in the Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Risk and Adaptation with retrospective, Adult Attachment Interview-based assessments of childhood abuse administered at ages 19 and 26 years.

Do digital technologies reduce racially biased reporting? Evidence from NYPD administrative data.

Recent work has emphasized the disproportionate bias faced by minorities when interacting with law enforcement. However, research on the topic has been hampered by biased sampling in administrative data, namely that records of police interactions with citizens only reflect information on the civilians that police elect to investigate, and not civilians that police observe but do not investigate. In this work, we address a related bias in administrative police data which has received less empirical attention, namely reporting biases around investigations that have taken place.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a lethal muscle disease caused by the absence of the protein dystrophin. Dystrophin is hypothesized to work as a molecular shock absorber that limits myofiber membrane damage when undergoing reversible unfolding upon muscle stretching and contraction. Utrophin is a dystrophin homologue that is under investigation as a protein replacement therapy for DMD.

Premise: The Caryophyllaceae (the carnation family) have undergone multiple transitions into colder climates and convergence on cushion plant adaptation, indicating that they may provide a natural system for cold adaptation research. Previous research has suggested that putative ancient whole-genome duplications (WGDs) are correlated with niche shifts into colder climates across the Caryophyllales. Here, we explored the genomic changes potentially involved in one of these discovered shifts in the Caryophyllaceae.

Data on simultaneous (heart and kidney transplants performed simultaneously) versus sequential (heart transplant performed before kidney) heart-kidney transplants in children are limited. Herein, we compare kidney transplant outcomes between the two groups.

Since the 1980s, dietary guidelines aimed at adverting chronic diseases have relied on epidemiological research to predict which dietary patterns correlate with reduced risk of chronic disease or links to health outcomes.

A panel network analysis of posttraumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms across the perinatal period.

The perinatal period is marked by a higher risk of experiencing depressive, anxiety, and/or trauma-related symptoms, a phenomenon that affects millions of individuals each year. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms commonly co-occur but have rarely been examined together beyond prevalence estimates in the perinatal period. Our study aimed to explore patterns of associations among OCD and PTSD symptoms to elucidate within- and between-person effects and how these effects may change over time.

Experiences and challenges of pre-exposure prophylaxis initiation and retention among high-risk populations: qualitative insights among service providers in Thailand.

Objectives: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been an essential element of the national combination prevention package and included in the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) of Thailand since 2019. As a part of the national monitoring and evaluation framework, this qualitative study aims to describe experiences and barriers concerning PrEP initiation and retention among service providers from both hospital and Key Population Led Health Service (KPLHS) settings under the country's UHC roll-out.

Methods: Between September and October 2020, ten focus group discussions with PrEP service providers from both hospitals and KPLHS across Thailand were conducted of which there were six hospitals, one health service center, three KPLHS.

Heterogeneity-induced retraction in viscoelastic fluids following cessation of flow.

Complex fluids including colloidal suspensions, microgels, and entangled wormlike micelles (WLMs) can develop heterogeneous flow regions under imposed steady shear. In some of these systems, the evolution to this flow state from rest is accompanied by flow reversal - when a portion of the fluid moves opposite to the imposed flow direction. Flow reversal was proposed to occur in shear startup when (1) the fluid has significant elasticity, and (2) the flow becomes heterogeneous immediately following the stress overshoot [McCauley , , 2023, , 661-681].

School of Nursing Climate Commitment: Nursing Faculty Bring Climate to the Classroom.

In 2021, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) added "the impact of climate change on environmental and population health" into The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education. Presently, little guidance exists for nursing faculty new to climate education. The year prior, the Nurses Climate Challenge (NCC)-a campaign to educate 50,000 health professionals about health impacts of climate change-launched the School of Nursing Commitment through a series of focus groups and collaborative content development.

Background: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided drainage of walled-off necrosis (WON) using either plastic or metal stents is the mainstay of WON management. Our single-center randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of biflanged metal stents (BFMSs) and plastic stents for WON drainage.

Methods: Patients with symptomatic WON amenable to EUS-guided drainage were randomized to receive either BFMSs or plastic stents.

Tanzanian adolescents' attitudes toward abortion: innovating video vignettes in survey research on health topics.

Background: The purpose of this study was to pilot an innovative cartoon video vignette survey methodology to learn about young people's perspectives on abortion and sexual relationships in Tanzania. The Animating Children's Views methodology used videos shown on tablets to engage young people in conversations. Such conversations are complicated because abortion is highly stigmatized, inaccessible, and illegal in Tanzania.

"Let's get back to normal": emotions mediate the effects of persuasive messages on willingness to vaccinate for COVID-19.

Objective: We examined the effectiveness of three different messages for persuading individuals to get vaccinated against COVID-19, and the role that emotions play in persuasion.

Methods: Four hundred-thirty-six participants reported their concern about the COVID-19 pandemic and confidence/hesitancy toward vaccines. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three text conditions: (1) self-interest: a persuasive message that focused on how much of a "serious threat COVID-19 is to you," and to get vaccinated to "protect yourself"; (2) self-interest + altruistic: a persuasive message that focused on the "threat to you and your community" and to get vaccinated to "protect you and your loved ones"; (3) self-interest + altruistic + normal: a persuasive message that included (2) but added "This is the only way we can get back to a normal life.
