Background: Venous waveform analysis is an emerging technique to estimate intravascular fluid status by fast Fourier transform deconvolution. Fluid status has been shown proportional to , the amplitude of the fundamental frequency of the waveform's cardiac wave upon deconvolution. Using a porcine model of distributive shock and fluid resuscitation, we sought to determine the influence of norepinephrine on of the central venous waveform.

Aims: Lower limb fractures are common in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and represent a significant burden to the existing orthopaedic surgical infrastructure. In high income country (HIC) settings, internal fixation is the standard of care due to its superior outcomes. In LMICs, external fixation is often the surgical treatment of choice due to limited supplies, cost considerations, and its perceived lower complication rate.

Background And Objectives: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD) motor symptoms. DBS is also associated with postoperative cognitive change in some patients. Previous studies found associations between medial active electrode contacts and overall cognitive decline.

Older adults were disproportionately affected by COVID-19. The purpose of this study was to explore experiences of sudden-onset social isolation and factors that influenced it among social isolation in two groups of older adults. A qualitative thematic study with a survey component was conducted comparing 18 older adults in two groups: 12 reporting physical health challenges and 6 reporting no physical health challenges.

Introduction: Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a prominent type of reversible dementia that may be treated with shunt surgery, and it is crucial to differentiate it from irreversible degeneration caused by its symptomatic mimics like Alzheimer's Dementia (AD) and Parkinson's Disease (PD). Similarly, it is important to distinguish between (normal pressure) hydrocephalus and irreversible atrophy/degeneration which are among the chronic effects of Traumatic Brain Injury (cTBI), as the former may be reversed through shunt placement. The purpose of this review is to elucidate the structural imaging markers which may be foundational to the development of accurate, noninvasive, and accessible solutions to this problem.

Dissecting cellulitis of the scalp (DCS) is a rare condition characterized by painful inflammatory nodules and abscesses on the scalp, often leading to sinus tracts and scarring alopecia. We present a case of DCS in a 26-year-old male who experienced significant clinical improvement following a short course of upadacitinib, a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor. The patient received multiple standard treatments such as topical antimicrobials, oral antibiotics, corticosteroids, and intralesional triamcinolone injections, with limited success.

Psychotic disorders represent a treatable but debilitating subset of mental illnesses. Children and adolescents who are given a diagnosis of psychosis are at risk for serious sequelae that may affect cognitive and social function. Alarmingly, evidence has shown that racial differences exist in the diagnosis and progression of pathology.

Background: Essential tremor (ET) patients present with both motor and non-motor symptoms including depression. Although deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) is used to treat motor symptoms of ET, there is no consensus as to how VIM DBS influences non-motor symptoms, specifically depression.
Objective: The objective of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis of available studies investigating change in pre- to postoperative depression scores as measured by Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) in ET patients receiving VIM DBS.

Background The association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations and increased cardiovascular event risk has not been adequately studied in a heterogenous population with both low and high cardiovascular risk. Methods and Results This post hoc analysis of the IMPACT (Informing the Pathway of COPD Treatment) trial (N=10 355 symptomatic patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at risk of exacerbations) evaluated time-dependent risk of cardiovascular adverse events of special interest (CVAESI) following exacerbations and impact of exacerbation history, cardiovascular risk factors, and study treatment on this association. Risk (time-to-first) of CVAESI or CVAESI resulting in hospitalization or death was assessed during and 1 to 30, 31 to 90, and 91 to 365 days after resolution of moderate or severe exacerbations.

Aims: Sleep disturbance is an important factor in the pathophysiology and progression of psychiatric disorders, but whether it is a cause, or a downstream effect is still not clear.
Methods: To investigate causal relationships between three sleep-associated traits and seven psychiatric diseases, we used genetic variants related to insomnia, chronotype and sleep duration to perform a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomisation analysis. Summary-level data on psychiatric disorders were extracted from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium.

Epidemics of nutritional deficiency disorders, caused by a lack of vitamins and minerals, were once very common and claimed many victims. Fortunately, advances in medicine have led to improved diets and a decline in the incidence of these disorders so that they are now seen clinically less often. Reminders of diseases such as scurvy, chlorosis, and pellagra can be found in artwork from the 19th century.
