In 2021, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) added "the impact of climate change on environmental and population health" into The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education. Presently, little guidance exists for nursing faculty new to climate education. The year prior, the Nurses Climate Challenge (NCC)-a campaign to educate 50,000 health professionals about health impacts of climate change-launched the School of Nursing Commitment through a series of focus groups and collaborative content development.

Abundance surveys are commonly used to estimate plant or animal densities and frequently require estimating detection probabilities to account for imperfect detection. The estimation of detection probabilities requires additional measurements that take time, potentially reducing the efficiency of the survey when applied to high-density populations. We conducted quadrat, removal, and distance surveys of zebra mussels () in three central Minnesota lakes and determined how much survey effort would be required to achieve a pre-specified level of precision for each abundance estimator, allowing us to directly compare survey design efficiencies across a range of conditions.

Pre-COVID-19 fear conditioning responses predict COVID-19-related anxiety: evidence from an exploratory study.

Anxiety Stress Coping

September 2022

Clinical Science and Psychopathology Research Program, Department of Psychology, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities Campus, Minneapolis, MN, USA.

Background And Objectives: Fear conditioning represents the prevailing model by which organisms acquire novel threat contingencies. However, little work has been devoted to linking laboratory measures of fear conditioning to the development of real-world threat responses. To fill this gap, the present study explored whether individual differences in a laboratory-based fear conditioning measure could predict levels of COVID-19-related anxiety and avoidance assessed during the first month of the pandemic.

Background: Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) incidence is rising worldwide, especially human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated disease. Historically, high levels of protein kinase CK2 were linked with poor outcomes in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), without consideration of HPV status. This retrospective study examined tumor CK2α protein expression levels and related clinical outcomes in a cohort of Veteran OPSCC patient tumors which were determined to be predominantly HPV(+).

Evolution and Vaccination of Influenza Virus.

J Comput Biol

August 2017

2 Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Campus, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In this study, we present an application paradigm in which an unsupervised machine learning approach is applied to the high-dimensional influenza genetic sequences to investigate whether vaccine is a driving force to the evolution of influenza virus. We first used a visualization approach to visualize the evolutionary paths of vaccine-controlled and non-vaccine-controlled influenza viruses in a low-dimensional space. We then quantified the evolutionary differences between their evolutionary trajectories through the use of within- and between-scatter matrices computation to provide the statistical confidence to support the visualization results.

Attachment anxiety is associated with greater perceived physical pain, whereas social support is associated with lower pain perceptions. Few studies, however, have examined the effects of attachment and support on acute physical pain in a dyadic context. In this study, first-time expectant mothers (=140) and their male partners completed romantic attachment measures (prenatally) and postnatal assessments of women's pain and men's emotional support during labor and delivery.

Background: A large body of research has focused on identifying the optimal number of dimensions - or spectra - to model individual differences in psychopathology. Recently, it has become increasingly clear that ostensibly competing models with varying numbers of spectra can be synthesized in empirically derived hierarchical structures.

Methods And Materials: We examined the convergence between top-down (bass-ackwards or sequential principal components analysis) and bottom-up (hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis) statistical methods for elucidating hierarchies to explicate the joint hierarchical structure of clinical and personality disorders.

Diversity and distribution of the Caddisflies (Insecta: Trichoptera) of Ecuador.

PeerJ

January 2017

Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Campus, Saint Paul, MN, United States; Departamento de Entomología, Museo de Historia Natural, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Peru.

Background: Aquatic insects and other freshwater animals are some of the most threatened forms of life on Earth. Caddisflies (Trichoptera) are highly biodiverse in the Neotropics and occupy a wide variety of freshwater habitats. In Andean countries, including Ecuador, knowledge of the aquatic biota is limited, and there is a great need for baseline data on the species found in these countries.

Anurans show the highest diversity in reproductive modes of all vertebrate taxa, with a variety of associated breeding behaviours. One striking feature of anuran reproduction is amplexus. During this process, in which the male clasps the female, both individuals' cloacae are juxtaposed to ensure successful external fertilization.

This longitudinal study examined how relative contributions to the division of childcare are related to individual and relational outcomes across the first 2 years of the transition to parenthood. Data were collected from a large sample of first-time parents 6 weeks before the birth of their child and then at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months postpartum. The results revealed that certain individual differences-especially gender and attachment avoidance-shape individual reactions to childcare, above and beyond the proportion of childcare tasks that partners report completing.

Learning models of PTSD: Theoretical accounts and psychobiological evidence.

Int J Psychophysiol

December 2015

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Campus, Department of Psychology, 75 East River Road, Minneapolis, MN 55455, United States.

Learning abnormalities have long been centrally implicated in posttraumatic psychopathology. Indeed, of all anxiety disorders, PTSD may be most clearly attributable to discrete, aversive learning events. In PTSD, such learning is acquired during the traumatic encounter and is expressed as both conditioned fear to stimuli associated with the event and more general over-reactivity-or failure to adapt-to intense, novel, or fear-related stimuli.

Objective: Recent work shows that the time from the initial use of nicotine, cannabis, and alcohol to the onset of dependence on these substances is shorter ("telescoped") in anxiety-disordered individuals. Previously, we hypothesized that telescoping may result from a shared neurobiology underlying both anxiety disorders and dependence. This hypothesis implies that telescoping occurs because individuals with an anxiety disorder transition to dependence with less overall drug exposure ("dependence susceptibility").
