Strength of vocal fold adduction has been hypothesized to be a critical factor influencing vocal acoustics but has been difficult to measure directly during phonation. Recent work has suggested that upper esophageal sphincter (UES) pressure, which can be easily assessed, increases with stronger vocal fold adduction, raising the possibility that UES pressure might indirectly reflect vocal fold adduction strength. However, concurrent UES pressure and vocal acoustics have not previously been examined across different vocal tasks.

Iron deficiency anemia in children remains a pervasive problem. Prolonged iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is linked to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes, but the duration of severe IDA (hemoglobin <7 g/dL) in children is poorly studied, particularly for racial/ethnic minority groups. We reviewed the electronic medical records of 92 children (1 to 5 y old) with IDA within a major metropolitan health care system.

Objectives: To assess hospitals' plans for implementing Minnesota's statewide guidance for allocating scarce critical care resources during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Patients And Methods: Individuals from 23 hospitals across Minnesota were invited to complete a 25-item survey between July 20, 2020, and September 18, 2020 to understand how hospitals in the state intended to operationalize statewide clinical triage instructions for scarce resources (including mechanical ventilation) and written ethics guidance on the allocation of critical care resources in the event crisis standards of care triggered triage.
Results: Of individuals invited from 23 hospitals, 14 hospitals completed the survey (60.

Liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. HCC, the most common type of primary liver cancer, is driven by complex genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. MicroRNAs, a class of naturally occurring small noncoding RNAs, play crucial roles in HCC by simultaneously modulating the expression of multiple genes in a fine-tuning manner.

Background: The prevalence of depression is high in the chronic kidney disease (CKD) (20-40%) and dialysis (30-50%) populations. Less is known about how depressive symptoms change over time in patients with CKD.
Methods: Participants in the Brain in Kidney Disease (BRINK) cohort study completed a depressive symptom questionnaire (PHQ-9) and serum creatinine testing annually.

Unlabelled: New interventions are necessary to increase postpartum abstinence from cigarette smoking. Sex hormones, specifically progesterone, have been found to be protective against drug-taking behaviors. Our pilot double-blind, randomized, controlled trial, although underpowered, suggested a trend toward a higher prevalence of smoking abstinence among postpartum participants receiving exogenous progesterone compared to those receiving placebo.

infection is the leading cause of antibiotic-associated, hospital-acquired diarrhea in the USA; the pathology of which is mediated by toxins. The presence of a toxin known as the Transferase (CDT) in some clinical isolates is linked to severe symptoms including increased incidence of reinfection and higher rates of mortality. Despite its apparent importance to pathology, a mechanistic model of how CDT intoxicates cells remains incomplete.

Brain-wide association studies (BWAS) are a fundamental tool in discovering brain-behaviour associations. Several recent studies have shown that thousands of study participants are required for good replicability of BWAS. Here we performed analyses and meta-analyses of a robust effect size index using 63 longitudinal and cross-sectional MRI studies from the Lifespan Brain Chart Consortium (77,695 total scans) to demonstrate that optimizing study design is critical for increasing standardized effect sizes and replicability in BWAS.

Aims: Most type 2 diabetes (T2D) studies have predominantly enrolled White people aged <65 years. This retrospective study evaluated outcomes for iGlarLixi (fixed-ratio combination [FRC] of insulin glargine 100 U/mL and lixisenatide) versus basal-bolus or premixed insulin in African American, Asian and Hispanic adults with T2D aged ≥65 years.
Methods: Medicare claims data were assessed from beneficiaries receiving basal insulin who newly initiated iGlarLixi, basal-bolus insulin, or premixed insulin between 7/1/2019 and 12/30/2021.

Background: Donor screening and antimicrobial management processes are inconsistent across organ procurement organizations (OPOs) and transplant centers. As part of a Controversies Conference addressing the evaluation and management of infectious diseases (ID) in deceased donors sponsored by the American Society of Transplantation (AST), two online pre-meeting surveys were developed to inform conference proceedings and assess current practices and opinions on donor screening and antimicrobial management.
Methods: Survey 1 addressed the current state of deceased donor ID testing, culture data communication, antimicrobial utilization, and involvement of transplant ID during donor management and was distributed to all 56 United States OPOs.
