Targeting quorum sensing for manipulation of commensal microbiota.

Bacteria communicate through the accumulation of autoinducer (AI) molecules that regulate gene expression at critical densities in a process called quorum sensing (QS). Extensive work using simple systems and single strains of bacteria have revealed a role for QS in the regulation of virulence factors and biofilm formation; however, less is known about QS dynamics among communities, especially in vivo. In this review, we summarize the diversity of QS signals as well as their ability to influence "non-target" behaviors among species that have receptors but not synthases for those signals.

Parent and Guardian Opinions on Obesity Medications Use in Adolescents with Obesity and Related Comorbidities.

There are now four FDA-approved anti-obesity medications (AOMs) for youth ≥12 years, which can be effective therapies to treat obesity and obesity-related comorbidities. This study describes parent/guardian (caregiver) openness to using AOMs for adolescents with obesity and evaluates factors that may contribute to openness. Caregivers of adolescents aged 12-17 years were surveyed.

Understanding pregnant individuals' attitudes toward eating and weight can provide insight into prenatal health behavior. Accordingly, we developed and performed initial psychometric testing of a self-report measure, the Pregnancy Eating Attitudes-Questionnaire (PEA-Q), among individuals with pre-pregnancy BMI≥25.

A Predictive Model for Graves' Disease Recurrence After Antithyroid Drug Therapy: A Retrospective Multicenter Cohort Study.

Objectives: Predicting recurrence after antithyroid drug (ATD) cessation is crucial for optimal treatment decision-making in patients with Graves' disease (GD). We aimed to identify factors associated with GD recurrence and to develop a model using routine pretherapeutic clinical parameters to predict GD recurrence risk during the first year following ATD discontinuation.

Methods: This electronic health records-based observational cohort study analyzed patients with GD treated with ATDs at 3 U.

Subacute Infarction of Recurrent Artery of Heubner Mimicking CNS Tumor With Correlative Brain MRI and 18F-FDG PET/CT Findings.

A 62-year-old man, previously treated for oral cavity carcinoma, presented with new-onset cognitive-motor symptoms. Brain MRI revealed a periventricular, avidly enhancing lesion in the right anterior basal ganglia and hypothalamus suspicious for a brain tumor, particularly CNS lymphoma. 18F-FDG brain PET/CT showed corresponding uptake suggestive of primary brain tumor, lymphoma, or metastasis.

Background: First tarsometatarsal (TMT) arthrodesis is one of the most common procedures performed each year for the correction of hallux valgus deformity, and nonunion rates for first TMT arthrodesis are commonly reported to be between 4% and 15%. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an intramedullary nail system in patients requiring first TMT arthrodesis.

Successful treatment of an intrahepatic congenital portosystemic shunt causing dysfunction in a pediatric liver transplant graft.

A 5-month-old child developed severe liver dysfunction after a liver transplant with a partial liver graft. Ultrasound examination revealed a communication between the left portal vein and the left hepatic vein, a rare congenital portosystemic shunt. Here we describe the successful management of this shunt with an endovascular closure device.

The use of Cortiva® Allograft Dermis in two-staged breast reconstruction: A matched-comparison and cost analyses study.

Background: Acellular dermal matrices (ADM) are an adjunct in implant-based breast reconstruction. While clinical outcomes have generally been equivocal between brands, a cost analysis between these brands has yet to be conducted. This study reports a single, academic institution's experience with 2 ADM brands in breast reconstruction and provides data on clinical and financial outcomes.

Long-Acting Growth Hormone Therapy in Pediatric Growth Hormone Deficiency: A Consensus Statement.

Context: Several long-acting growth hormone (LAGH) therapies have recently become available, but guidance on their usage in children with growth hormone (GH) deficiency is limited.

Methods: International experts in pediatric endocrinology were invited to join a consensus group based on their expertise in treating children with daily GH and LAGH. The group comprised 11 experts from 10 countries across the world.

Objective: Event capture in clinical trials is resource-intensive, and electronic medical records (EMRs) offer a potential solution. This study develops algorithms for EMR-based death and hospitalization capture and compares them with traditional event capture methods.

Different Grey Matter Microstructural Patterns in Cognitively Healthy Versus Typical Ageing Healthy Versus Typical Brain Ageing.

Ageing is a complex phenomenon affecting a wide range of coexisting biological processes. The homogeneity of the studied population is an essential parameter for valid interpretations of outcomes. The presented study capitalises on the MRI data available in the Human Connectome Project-Aging (HCP-A) and, within individuals over 55 years of age who passed the HCP-A section criteria, compares a subgroup of 37 apparently neurocognitively healthy individuals selected based on stringent criteria with 37 age and sex-matched individuals still representative of typical ageing but who did not pass the stringent definition of neurocognitively healthy.

Interpersonal, Community, and Institutional Influences on Sexual Consent Among Fraternity and Sorority Students in the Context of a Hookup: A Qualitative Analysis.

College sexual assault is a persistent public health problem in the United States. A public health approach to develop effective prevention strategies must take into account the social ecology of college campuses, including interpersonal-, community-, and institutional-level factors that may influence sexual assault. To maximize effectiveness, prevention strategies should be tailored to reflect contextual factors of specific college communities and situations where sexual assault is more likely to occur.

Rapid, Tailored Dietary and Health Education Through A Social Media Chatbot Microintervention: Development and Usability Study With Practical Recommendations.

Background: There is an urgent need to innovate methods of health education, which can often be resource- and time-intensive. Microinterventions have shown promise as a platform for rapid, tailored resource dissemination yet have been underexplored as a method of standardized health or dietary education; social media chatbots display unique potential as a modality for accessible, efficient, and affordable educational microinterventions.

Objective: This study aims to provide public health professionals with practical recommendations on the use of social media chatbots for health education by (1) documenting the development of a novel social media chatbot intervention aimed at improving dietary attitudes and self-efficacy among South Asian American young adults and (2) describing the applied experiences of implementing the chatbot, along with user experience and engagement data.
