In this paper, we report a new, simple method for the synthesis of CdS and ZnS nanoparticles (NPs) prepared in a basic aqueous medium using metal xanthate as the sulfur source. The structure, morphology, size distribution, optical band gap, and photocatalytic properties of the newly obtained nanomaterials were investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that both CdS and ZnS crystallized in cubic phase and formed NPs with average sizes of 7.

In this scientific report, a new technique of artificial intelligence which is based on k-nearest neighbors (KNN) and particle swarm optimization (PSO), named as PSO-KNN, was developed and proposed for estimating blast-induced ground vibration (PPV). In the proposed PSO-KNN, the hyper-parameters of the KNN were searched and optimized by the PSO. Accordingly, three forms of kernel function of the KNN were used, Quartic (Q), Tri weight (T), and Cosine (C), which result in three models and abbreviated as PSO-KNN-Q, PSO-KNN-T, and PSO-KNN-C models.

Engineering surface structure of catalysts is an efficient way towards high catalytic performance. Here, we report on the synthesis of regular iridium nanospheres (Ir NSs), with abundant atomic steps prepared by a laser ablation technique. Atomic steps, consisting of one-atom level covering the surface of such Ir NSs, were observed by aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) The prepared Ir NSs exhibited remarkably enhanced activity both for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic medium.

The main goal of this study is to estimate the pullout forces by developing various modelling technique like feedforward neural network (FFNN), radial basis functions neural networks (RBNN), general regression neural network (GRNN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). A hybrid learning algorithm, including a back-propagation and least square estimation, is utilized to train ANFIS in MATLAB (software). Accordingly, 432 samples have been applied, through which 300 samples have been considered as training dataset with 132 ones for testing dataset.

In this research, the novel metaheuristic algorithm Harris hawks optimization (HHO) is applied to landslide susceptibility analysis in Western Iran. To this end, the HHO is synthesized with an artificial neural network (ANN) to optimize its performance. A spatial database comprising 208 historical landslides, as well as 14 landslide conditioning factors-elevation, slope aspect, plan curvature, profile curvature, soil type, lithology, distance to the river, distance to the road, distance to the fault, land cover, slope degree, stream power index (SPI), topographic wetness index (TWI), and rainfall-is prepared to develop the ANN and HHO-ANN predictive tools.

Introducing hierarchical pore structure to microporous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be beneficial for reactions where the rate of reaction is limited by low rates of diffusion or high pressure drop. This advantageous pore structure can be obtained by defect formation, mostly via post-synthetic acid etching, which has been studied extensively on water-stable MOFs. Here we show that a water-unstable HKUST-1 MOF can also be modified in a corresponding manner by using phosphoric acid as a size-selective etching agent and a mixture of dimethyl sulfoxide and methanol as a dilute solvent.

In this study, a two-photon fluorescence microscopic imaging technique is reported for assessment the effect of dynamic hypertonic environment on the overall energy metabolism alteration and adaptation of soil-living amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum. For that purpose the fluorescence intensity of mitochondrial reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) was monitored and quantified in order to evaluate the corresponded metabolic state of monolayer cultured cells. The two-photon excitation of NADH with 720 nm near infrared irradiation produced blue fluorescence emission with maximum wavelength centered at 460 nm.

The main objective of the present study was to provide a novel methodological approach for flash flood susceptibility modeling based on a feature selection method (FSM) and tree based ensemble methods. The FSM, used a fuzzy rule based algorithm FURIA, as attribute evaluator, whereas GA were used as the search method, in order to obtain optimal set of variables used in flood susceptibility modeling assessments. Here, we report on ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) generated by nanosecond pulsed laser (Nd:YAG, 1064 nm) through ablation of metallic Zn target in water and air and their comparative analysis as potential nanomaterials for biomedical applications. The prepared nanomaterials were carefully characterized in terms of their structure, composition, morphology and defects. It was found that in addition to the main wurtzite ZnO phase, which is conventionally prepared and reported by others, the sample laser generated in air also contained some amount of monoclinic zinc hydroxynitrate.

The real time monitoring and quantification of the concentration of highly fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon nanodots (C-dots) in eukaryotic Tobacco bright yellow-2 (BY-2) plant cells was investigated by fluorescence and confocal microscopy. The quantitative measurement of their fluorescent emission intensity was possible because of the high photo-resistance, good water solubility and the absence of fading effect of the nanoparticles, which is frequent occurred problem of the conventional organic dyes. The microscopic analysis revealed that C-dots entered generally into the cells through endocytosis and caused negligible cytotoxicity.

Flash floods are widely recognized as one of the most devastating natural hazards in the world, therefore prediction of flash flood-prone areas is crucial for public safety and emergency management. This research proposes a new methodology for spatial prediction of flash floods based on Sentinel-1 SAR imagery and a new hybrid machine learning technique. The SAR imagery is used to detect flash flood inundation areas, whereas the new machine learning technique, which is a hybrid of the firefly algorithm (FA), Levenberg⁻Marquardt (LM) backpropagation, and an artificial neural network (named as FA-LM-ANN), was used to construct the prediction model.

This manuscript reported data for total suspended particulate matter (TSPM), particle-bound mercury (PBM), and total gaseous mercury (TGM) in Almadenejos, a rural zone of ancient Hg mining and metallurgical works. Concentrations of TSPM characterize the study site as being a rural area, with levels below 40 μg m during most of the year and sporadic events involving dust intrusions from Africa. Mercury speciation of PM and nearby soils, which contain both cinnabar and organic Hg, confirms that the PM comes from local soil emissions involving the soils polluted by ancient metallurgical works.

Clay mineralogy and major-element geochemistry of Miocene sedimentary rock and modern river sediment samples collected from the Ba River basin in central Vietnam are used to evaluate the chemical weathering processes during the Miocene and the present time. The results show that Miocene andesitic sedimentary rocks consist of high smectite (average 72%) with moderate kaolinite (24%), while Miocene felsic sedimentary rocks display abundant kaolinite (65%) with moderate smectite (25%). In comparison, modern river sediments are characterized by moderate smectite (43%) and kaolinite (37%).

This work aimed to prepare nanostructures of ZnO with various lasers, testing them as photocatalysts, and comparing their morphology and activity in the degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous media. ZnO nanospheres (ns-ZnO) and ZnO nanorods (ms-ZnO) were prepared via the laser ablation of a Zn metal plate in water using nanosecond- and millisecond-pulsed lasers, respectively.
