In the PAMELA study (Pressioni Arteriose Monitorate e Loro Associazioni), clinical variables, an echocardiogram, as well as office and ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) were simultaneously measured at baseline and after a 10-year follow-up. The study design allowed us to assess the value of masked hypertension (MH) as a predictor of new-onset left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). The present analysis included 803 participants without LVH at baseline (left ventricular mass index <115 g/m in men and <100 g/m in women).

Cross-sectional and longitudinal data analysis of the PAMELA (Pressioni Monitorate E Loro Associazioni) population was performed to assess the association between prehypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) at entry and the risk of new-onset LVH associated to this condition in the subset of participants with normal LV mass index (LVMI). A total of untreated 1397 participants with measurable echocardiographic parameters at baseline were considered in the cross-sectional analysis. The longitudinal analysis included 880 participants without LVH at baseline and with measurable LVMI at follow-up examination performed 10 years later.

Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), as assessed by ultrasonography, has been shown to be directly related to cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality independently of conventional risk factors. A method for the determination of DNA global methylation, taken as the ratio (%) of 5-methylcytosine (5mCyt) versus the sum of cytosine (Cyt) and 5mCyt, via gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), was developed and validated. DNA (2.5 microg) was hydrolyzed with aqueous formic acid 88%, spiked with cytosine-2,4-(13)C(2),(15)N(3) and 5-methyl-(2)H(3)-cytosine-6-(2)H(1) as internal standards, and derivatized with N-methyl-N-(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide and 1% tert-butyldimethylchlorosilane, in the presence of acetonitrile and pyridine.

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) and tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME) are oxygenated compounds added to gasoline to enhance octane rating and to improve combustion. They may be found as pollutants of living and working environments. In this work a robotized method for the quantification of low level MTBE, ETBE and TAME in human urine was developed and validated.

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I antigens can act as signal-transducing molecules that influence individual reactivity to external stimuli and the existence of haplotype-specific cell signal regulation has been suggested. In this article, we provide definite experimental evidence for the existence of a HLA-B35 haplotype-specific regulation of cell apoptosis in different experimental models. First, we demonstrated that HLA-B35, but not other HLA-class I antigens, was associated with an increased cell susceptibility to apoptosis in human peripheral mononuclear cells (PBMCs) exposed in vitro to thapsigargin.
