Objective: The effector T cell and B cell cytokine networks have been implicated in the pathogenesis of systemic autoimmune diseases, but the association of these cytokine networks with the heterogeneity of clinical manifestations and immune profiles has not been carefully examined. This study was undertaken to examine whether cytokine profiles can delineate distinct groups of patients in 4 systemic autoimmune diseases (systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic sclerosis).
Methods: A total of 179 patients and 48 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the multicenter cross-sectional PRECISE Systemic Autoimmune Diseases (PRECISESADS) study.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a rare disease characterised by venous and/or arterial thrombosis, pregnancy complications and the presence of specific autoantibodies called antiphospholipid antibodies. This review aims to identify existing clinical practice guidelines (CPG) as part of the ERN ReCONNET project, aimed at evaluating existing CPGs or recommendations in rare and complex diseases. Seventeen papers providing important data were identified; however, the literature search highlighted the scarceness of reliable clinical data to develop CPGs.

Autoimmune diseases are a complex set of diseases characterized by immune system activation and, although many progresses have been done in the last 15years, several unmet needs in the management of these patients may be still identified. Recently, a panel of international Experts, divided in different working groups according to their clinical and scientific expertise, were asked to identify, debate and formulate a list of key unmet needs within the field of rheumatology, serving as a roadmap for research as well as support for clinicians. After a systematic review of the literature, the results and the discussions from each working group were summarised in different statements.

Despite the theorized role of body checking behaviours in the maintenance process of binge eating, the mechanisms by which they may impact binge eating remain unclear. Using objectification model of eating pathology as a theoretical framework, the authors examined the potential intervening roles of body shame, appearance anxiety, and dietary restraint in the pathway between body checking and binge eating. Data collected from a large sample of treatment-seeking people with Bulimic-type Eating Disorders ( = 801) were analysed trough structural equation modelling.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pivotal regulator of the innate and adaptive immunity affecting the response and behavior of macrophages and lymphocytes. MIF is also implicated in other fundamental cellular processes including angiogenesis and cell proliferation. Several studies examined the expression of MIF in reproductive organs and tissues and its involvement in different aspects of human and animal reproduction.

The Study on Cognition and Prognosis in the Elderly (SCOPE) assessed the effect of candesartan on cardiovascular and cognitive outcomes in elderly patients (aged 70-89 years) with mild to moderate hypertension. Patients were randomized to treatment with candesartan 8-16 mg daily (n = 2477) or placebo (n = 2460) and followed for 3.7 years on average.

Although the mechanisms causing recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) remain frequently speculative, recent evidence indicates that a specific uterine immune-endocrine network plays a pivotal role in the continuation of pregnancy. We have recently demonstrated that an adhesion molecule of the immune system, named intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1, is markedly expressed at both protein and mRNA levels in endometrial stromal cells and is able to mediate their interaction with lymphoid cells. Moreover, we have shown that the soluble form of ICAM-1 (sICAM-1) can be released by the endometrium in a hormone-dependent manner.

Objective: To relate endometrial release of the soluble form of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 with extent of endometriosis.
Methods: Samples of endometrium were collected from 23 women with endometriosis. Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 was quantified in conditioned medium from 48-hour endometrial stromal cell cultures with use of a specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
