Objective: To evaluate care retention among Veterans with serious mental illness (SMI) who were lost to Veterans Health Administration (VHA) care for at least one year and subsequently returned to VHA care via the SMI Re-Engagement program, an outreach program for Veterans with SMI who are lost-to-care.

Methods: For the 410 Veterans with SMI who returned to care via SMI Re-Engagement between April 4th, 2016 and January 31, 2018, we assessed VHA in-person and telehealth utilization (overall, primary care, mental health care) for two years following the date of return to care.

Results: Care retention was common: 70.

Noninvasive delivery of near-infrared light (IRL) to human tissues has been researched as a treatment for several acute and chronic disease conditions. We recently showed that use of specific IRL wavelengths, which inhibit the mitochondrial enzyme cytochrome oxidase (COX), leads to robust neuroprotection in animal models of focal and global brain ischemia/reperfusion injury. These life-threatening conditions can be caused by an ischemic stroke or cardiac arrest, respectively, two leading causes of death.

Background To assess the predictive performance of two established, short clinical screeners in predicting the future development of post-injury depression and PTSD. Methods This was a prospective, cohort design with a 3-month follow-up. Black adult male trauma patients were enrolled at an urban, Level 1 trauma center.

Physician management of thyroid cancer patients' worry.

Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan-North Campus Research Complex, 2800 Plymouth Road, Bldg 16, Rm 408E, Ann Arbor, MI, 48109, USA.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand physician management of thyroid cancer-related worry.

Methods: Endocrinologists, general surgeons, and otolaryngologists identified by Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) patients were surveyed 2018-2019 (response rate 69% (448/654)) and asked to rate in general their patients' worry at diagnosis and actions they take for worried patients. Multivariable-weighted logistic regressions were conducted to determine physician characteristics associated with reporting thyroid cancer as "good cancer" and with encouraging patients to seek help managing worry outside the physician-patient relationship.

Personalized scaffolding technologies for alveolar bone regenerative medicine.

Orthod Craniofac Res

May 2019

Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, School of Dentistry, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The reconstruction of alveolar bone defects associated with teeth and dental implants remains a clinical challenge in the treatment of patients affected by disease or injury of the alveolus. The aim of this review was to provide an overview on advances made in the use of personalized scaffolding technologies coupled with biologics, cells and gene therapies that offer future clinical applications for the treatment of patients requiring periodontal and alveolar bone regeneration. Over the past decade, advancements in three-dimensional (3D) imaging acquisition technologies such as cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and precise scaffold fabrication methods such as 3D bioprinting have resulted in personalized scaffolding constructs based on individual patient-specific anatomical data.

Background: Comprehensive mandatory use laws for prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) have been implemented in a number of states to help address the opioid overdose epidemic. These laws may reduce opioid-related overdose deaths by increasing prescribers' use of PDMPs and reducing high-risk prescribing behaviors.

Methods: We used state PDMP data to examine the effect of these mandates on prescriber registration, use of the PDMP, and on prescription-based measures of patient risk in three states-Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia-that implemented mandates between 2010 and 2015.

Secalonic Acid-D Represses HIF1α/VEGF-Mediated Angiogenesis by Regulating the Akt/mTOR/p70S6K Signaling Cascade.

Division of Cancer Pharmacology, Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, CSIR, Jammu, India. Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), New Delhi, India.

Tumor angiogenesis is a validated target for therapeutic intervention, but agents that are more disease selective are needed. Here, we report the isolation of secalonic acid-D (SAD), a mycotoxin from a novel source that exhibits potent antiangiogenic antitumor activity. SAD inhibited multiple HIF1α/VEGF-arbitrated angiogenesis dynamics as scored in human umbilical vascular endothelial cells and human MCF-7 breast tumor xenografts.

Department of Cancer Pharmacology, Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu and Kashmir, India; Experimental Breast Cancer Research Laboratory, University of Michigan North Campus Research Complex, Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States of America.

Tryptanthrin is a natural product which has been reported to have several medicinal properties. In this study, we tried to investigate the detailed molecular mechanism of its bromo analogue (TBr), a potent cytotoxic agent in the induction of cancer cell death. It was found that TBr primarily targets STAT3 and ERK signaling during the induction of apoptosis in several human leukemia cell lines.

Assertive community treatment in veterans affairs settings: impact on adherence to antipsychotic medication.

May 2013

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Health Services Research and Development Service and the Serious Mental Illness Treatment, Resource and Evaluation Center, University of Michigan North Campus Research Complex, Building 16, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, USA.

OBJECTIVES Assertive community treatment (ACT) programs may improve patients' outcomes, in part by increasing adherence to antipsychotic medication. This study assessed the association between ACT enrollment and subsequent antipsychotic adherence. METHODS The authors identified a national sample of 763 Veterans Affairs (VA) patients with schizophrenia who were newly enrolled in ACT in fiscal years 2001 to 2004 and had valid antipsychotic medication possession ratios (MPRs) for five sequential six-month periods, the first occurring before ACT enrollment.

Guided by a life course perspective, the current study examined whether emerging adults with and without mothers with affective disorders viewed their relationships with their mothers differently, and whether aspects of the emerging adult-mother relationship were associated with reports of caregiving for mothers. Reports from emerging adults with mothers with affective disorders (n = 46) were compared to reports from emerging adults with mothers without mental illness (n = 64). Results indicated that emerging adults with mothers with affective disorders reported significantly lower levels of affection, felt obligation, reciprocity, and future caregiving intentions, and significantly higher levels of role reversal in their relationships with their mothers.
