Given the trend of condensed preclinical curricula in medical schools nationwide, creating meaningful pathology learning experiences within the clinical and post-clinical curricula is important to both enhance student understanding of how pathology integrates into daily healthcare delivery and spark potential career interest in the field. While pathology electives are a common modality for medical students to explore pathology, they frequently render students passive observers of daily clinical workflows (often in grossing and sign-out rooms of surgical pathology). This can have a negative impact on student engagement with their pathology clinical teams and on their satisfaction with the pathology elective experience.

Graduate Program in Immunology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA; Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Division, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor, MI, USA; Research Service, VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, Ann Arbor, MI, USA. Electronic address:

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by infiltration of the airways and lung parenchyma by inflammatory cells. Lung pathology results from the cumulative effect of complex and aberrant interactions between multiple cell types. However, three cell types, natural killer cells (NK), dendritic cells (DCs), and regulatory T cells (Tregs), are understudied and underappreciated.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed data from the US National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey to assess the prevalence and mortality risks associated with preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults aged 20-79 from 2007-2012.
  • The results indicated that COPD prevalence ranged from 13.1% to 14.3%, while PRISm ranged from 9.6% to 10.2%, with differences linked to factors like sex, age, and race/ethnicity, showing higher COPD rates in males and PRISm in females.
  • Mortality risk analysis revealed strong associations between PRISm and all-cause mortality (HR: 2.3)

Autografting with split-thickness skin grafts (STSG) remains an essential procedure in burn and reconstructive surgery. The process of harvesting STSG, however, leaves behind a donor site, an exposed area of partial-thickness dermis left to heal by secondary intention. There has yet to be a consensus amongst surgeons regarding optimal management of the donor site.

Background: A co-surgeon model is known to be favorable in microvascular breast reconstruction, but simultaneous co-surgeon deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap cases have not been well-studied. The authors hypothesize that performing two simultaneous co-surgeon bilateral DIEP flap reconstructions results in non-inferior clinical outcomes and may improve patient access to care.

Methods: A single-institution, retrospective cohort study was performed utilizing record review to identify all cases of co-surgeon free-flap breast reconstructions over a 38-month period.
