Ground-glass opacities (GGOs) in the absence of interstitial lung disease are understudied. To assess the association of GGOs with white blood cells (WBCs) and progression of quantified chest computed tomography emphysema. We analyzed data of participants in the SPIROMICS study (Subpopulations and Intermediate Outcome Measures in COPD Study).

Given the trend of condensed preclinical curricula in medical schools nationwide, creating meaningful pathology learning experiences within the clinical and post-clinical curricula is important to both enhance student understanding of how pathology integrates into daily healthcare delivery and spark potential career interest in the field. While pathology electives are a common modality for medical students to explore pathology, they frequently render students passive observers of daily clinical workflows (often in grossing and sign-out rooms of surgical pathology). This can have a negative impact on student engagement with their pathology clinical teams and on their satisfaction with the pathology elective experience.

Boarding of critically ill patients in the Emergency Department (ED) has increased over the past 20 years, leading hospital systems to explore ED-focused models of critical care delivery. ED-critical care delivery models vary between health systems due to differences in hospital resources and the needs of the critically ill patients boarding in the ED. Three published systems include an ED critical care intensivist consultation model, a hybrid model, and an ED-intensive care unit model.

Smoking is a well-known cause of impairment in wound healing and postoperative outcomes; however, its effects on treating meniscus issues remain unclear. This study assesses the relationship between smoking and meniscus treatment outcomes. PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, and CINAHL were searched from inception to 24 December 2023.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by infiltration of the airways and lung parenchyma by inflammatory cells. Lung pathology results from the cumulative effect of complex and aberrant interactions between multiple cell types. However, three cell types, natural killer cells (NK), dendritic cells (DCs), and regulatory T cells (Tregs), are understudied and underappreciated.

Importance: The prevalence, pathophysiology, and long-term outcomes of COVID-19 (post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 [PASC] or "Long COVID") in children and young adults remain unknown. Studies must address the urgent need to define PASC, its mechanisms, and potential treatment targets in children and young adults.
Observations: We describe the protocol for the Pediatric Observational Cohort Study of the NIH's REsearching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative.

Autografting with split-thickness skin grafts (STSG) remains an essential procedure in burn and reconstructive surgery. The process of harvesting STSG, however, leaves behind a donor site, an exposed area of partial-thickness dermis left to heal by secondary intention. There has yet to be a consensus amongst surgeons regarding optimal management of the donor site.

Objective: With an aging population and advancements in imaging, recurrence of thoracic aortic dissection is becoming more common.
Methods: All patients enrolled in the International Registry of Aortic Dissection from 1996 to 2023 with type A and type B acute aortic dissection were identified. Among them, initial dissection and recurrent dissection were discerned.

Background: Endovascular therapy (EVT) dramatically improves clinical outcomes for patients with anterior circulation emergent large vessel occlusion (ELVO) strokes. With recent publication of two randomized controlled trials in favor of EVT for basilar artery occlusions, the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery (SNIS) Standards and Guidelines Committee provides this focused update for the existing SNIS guideline, 'Current endovascular strategies for posterior circulation large vessel occlusion stroke.'
Methods: A structured literature review and analysis of studies related to posterior circulation large vessel occlusion (basilar or vertebral artery) strokes treated by EVT was performed.

Introduction: While Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols are becoming more common in pediatric surgery, there is still little published about protocol compliance and sustainability.
Methods: This is a prospective observational study to evaluate the compliance of an ERAS protocol for pectus repair at a large academic children's hospital. Our primary outcome was overall protocol compliance at 1-y postimplementation of the ERAS protocol.

Background: Wearable sensors are increasingly being explored in health care, including in cancer care, for their potential in continuously monitoring patients. Despite their growing adoption, significant challenges remain in the quality and consistency of data collected from wearable sensors. Moreover, preprocessing pipelines to clean, transform, normalize, and standardize raw data have not yet been fully optimized.

Background: A co-surgeon model is known to be favorable in microvascular breast reconstruction, but simultaneous co-surgeon deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap cases have not been well-studied. The authors hypothesize that performing two simultaneous co-surgeon bilateral DIEP flap reconstructions results in non-inferior clinical outcomes and may improve patient access to care.
Methods: A single-institution, retrospective cohort study was performed utilizing record review to identify all cases of co-surgeon free-flap breast reconstructions over a 38-month period.

A retrospective analysis of 20 adult patients with histopathological and clinical diagnoses of ECD was conducted at a single institution over a twenty-year period (2002-2022). Clinical responses were compared on the basis of treatments rendered, which included chemotherapy, immunotherapy, systemic corticosteroids, surgery and radiation, or targeted agents, referring to any small molecular inhibitors. Treatment response evaluation varied by the anatomic site(s) of disease, the extent of disease at diagnosis, and the imaging modality employed.

The essence of treating scar contractures lies in covering the skin deficit after releasing the contractures, typically using flaps or skin grafts. However, the specific characteristics of scar contractures, such as their location, shape, and size, vary among patients, which makes surgical planning challenging. To achieve excellent outcomes in the treatment of scar contractures, we have developed a dimensional classification system for these contractures.

Background & Aims: Steatotic liver disease (SLD), characterized by elevated liver fat content (LFC), is influenced by genetics and diet. However, whether diet has a differential effect based on genetic risk is not well-characterized. We aimed to determine how genetic factors interact with diet to affect SLD in a large national biobank.
