Infections in older individuals can result in cognitive function decline, yet research is limited on how recurrent infections affect cognitive responses. Activation of the immune system results in sickness responses mediated by cytokines. This pilot study examined effects of a model of recurrent infection in aged, male Brown Norway rats on sickness responses, including spatial learning, and cytokine levels.

Suburban landscapes can alter spatial patterns by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and increase animal contact with vectors, pathogens, and humans. Close-contact relationships at a landscape level can have broad implications for disease epidemiology. From 1995-1999, we captured and radio-collared 41 deer in two suburban forest preserves in Chicago, Illinois.

The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was twofold: (1) to identify common experiences or barriers that arise during the first year as Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) move into management and (2) to identify knowledge, skills, abilities, and resources needed to ensure a smooth and successful career transition for new CRNA managers. A sample of 18 current and past CRNA managers participated in one-on-one phone interviews using a 16-question, semistructured interview protocol. Interview data were analyzed for emergent themes using qualitative data analysis software.

Objectives: Despite nursing students' need for cultural education, few studies have measured what students expect from international service-learning experiences and how their perceptions of the actual experience compare to these expectations. To increase understanding of global nursing experiences, the purpose of this study was to examine the similarities and differences between nursing students' anticipated (pre-travel) personal and professional developmental expectations and reported (posttravel) personal and developmental outcomes.

Design: This study employed a mixed descriptive research design.

Development of bio-based polymers has been promoted by the growing concerns about the long-term sustainability and negative environmental footprint of petroleum-based polymer materials. A new monomer containing benzocyclobutene and allyl units has been developed by using rosin as the feedstock. The structure of the monomer was characterized by elemental analysis, MS, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy.

An historical overview of Leininger's Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality also known as the Culture Care Theory (CCT) and evolution of the Sunrise Enabler are presented along with descriptions of the theory purpose, goal, tenets, basic assumptions, major core constructs, and orientational definitions. Recent articles, books, and book chapters provide relevant exemplars to enhance scholarly understanding and application of theory constructs. Proposed future directions encompass using the CCT to guide research of discovery and translational research projects for evidenced-based nursing practice; develop nursing courses and curricula to prepare culturally competent nurses; guide future culturally competent administrative and leadership policies and procedures; inform public policy related to cultural diversity and underserved populations; promote grant writing initiatives to enhance cultural diversity in hiring nursing staff, supervisors, and faculty; and promote admission of nursing students from underserved and/or diverse backgrounds.

Aims: This study examined latent trajectories of bullying perpetration and victimization, and identified neighborhood antecedents of these trajectories among South Korean adolescents.

Methods: Nationally representative individual-level data from waves 2 to 6 (middle school to high school) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey were merged with neighborhood-level data drawn from the Korean Census and the Korean Ministry of Education. Latent class growth analysis (N = 2,178) and logistic regression were conducted (N = 2,021).

Background: Development of professional nursing values is critical within registered nurse-to-bachelor of science in nursing programs to prepare nurses for increasingly complex and diverse work environments. The results of previous studies have been inconsistent, with few studies focusing on online registered nurse-to-bachelor of science in nursing programs. In addition, little is known regarding the effectiveness of the educational methods used to support advancement of professional values and ethical practice.

Background: Burnout affects large portions of the healthcare workforce and is associated with increased medical errors, decreased patient experience and adherence, loss of professionalism, and decreased productivity. Little data exists on how novel clinical care settings might impact burnout. We studied the experience and burnout of staff involved in a home hospital pilot, where acutely ill patients were cared for at home as a substitute for traditional hospitalization.

Jamie Rasmussen, MS, is Registered Dietitian, Department of HEV, Central Michigan University, Mt Pleasant. David M. Duriancik, PhD, is Associate Professor, Department of HEV, Central Michigan University, Mt Pleasant, and Department of Biology, University of Michigan-Flint, Flint.

The human gastrointestinal tract is a complex system of digestive pathways aided by mechanical processes, enzymes, transport molecules, and colonic bacteria. Occasionally, these bacterial components transplant to atypical locations due to various gastrointestinal imbalances or anatomical structural issues. This may lead to bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine, where minimal or no bacteria are normally found.

The goals of the Andrews/Boyle Transcultural Interprofessional Practice (TIP) model are to provide a patient- or client-centered systematic, logical, orderly, scientific process for delivering safe, culturally congruent and competent, affordable, accessible, evidence-based, and quality care for people from diverse backgrounds across the life span. Key components of the TIP model include the context from which people's health-related values, attitudes, beliefs, and practices emerge; the interprofessional health care team; effective verbal and nonverbal communication among all team members; and a five-step systematic, scientific problem-solving process-assessment, mutual goal setting, and planning, implementing, and evaluating the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions and care. The model is applicable wherever nurses practice, teach, learn, lead, consult, and conduct research domestically and globally.

Suburban white-tailed deer seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii from Chicago, Illinois.

Parasitol Res

July 2019

Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, University of Illinois, 1102 South Goodwin, Avenue, Urbana, IL, 61801, USA.

The presence and abundance of vertebrates influences the circulation of zoonotic diseases. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are widely distributed in North America and deer densities are frequently high in unhunted areas, including most major metropolitan regions. This study investigated the seroprevalence for Toxoplasma gondii from live-captured and culled deer sampled in two suburban forest preserves around Chicago, Illinois, from 1995 to 1999.

Background: Evidence for associations between the insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene and physical performance is conflicting. Furthermore, investigations of relationships between lower extremity strength and physical performance have usually not considered the role of the ACE genotype, and it is unclear whether there are variations in relationships between lower extremity strength and physical performance among ACE genotypes in older adults.

Objective: The objectives of this study were to investigate associations between the ACE I/D polymorphism and physical performance and to determine whether relationships between lower extremity strength and physical performance vary among ACE genotypes in older adults.
