Nurse Educ

December 2020

Author Affiliations: Director of Undergraduate Nursing Affairs and Assistant Professor of Nursing (Dr Keiser) and Clinical Assistant Professor of Nursing (Ms Murray-Wright), University of Michigan-Flint, School of Nursing.

Background: Many instructional classrooms now exist in the online environment, where it is difficult to integrate experiential teaching strategies. Autopsy-based education has been shown to be a valuable teaching tool for pathophysiology in a medical school curriculum.

Problem: There is a gap in the literature about the use of an autopsy observation in nurse practitioner (NP) education.

A robust research literature links parental spanking with negative behavioral outcomes for children, however, it remains unclear whether conditions in the community may moderate the associations between spanking and behavior problems in early childhood. In the current study, we examined whether community violence exposure moderated the associations of maternal spanking with externalizing and internalizing behavior problems of young children. The sample used in this study was urban families and their children ages 3-5 (n = 2,472).

TRA-1-60 (TRA) is a cell-surface antigen implicated in drug resistance, relapse, and recurrence. Its expression has been reported in breast, prostate, pancreatic, ovarian tumors, and follicular lymphoma, which paved the development of the therapeutic antibody, Bstrongomab (Bsg), and its drug conjugates. Because patient selection is critical to achieve clinical benefit, a noninvasive imaging agent to select TRA+ lesions in patients is needed.

Background: Cancer rehabilitation research has accelerated over the last decade. However, closer examination of the published literature reveals that the majority of this work has focused on psychological interventions and cognitive and behavioral therapies. Recent initiatives have aggregated expert consensus around research priorities, highlighting a dearth in research regarding measurement of and interventions for physical function.

Complete spinal cord injury is a devastating occurrence afflicting millions of people worldwide with no available treatment for functional motor recovery. In this report, we describe a procedure in which we used parts of a device available for chronic pain treatment to provide a neuromodulation of motor nerve roots in a case with complete motor and sensory paraplegia. By using a retrograde trans-foraminal approach to implant electrodes close to L2-S1 motor nerve roots bilaterally, we were able to stimulate those nerves and induce precise movements at the joints of lower extremity in a T5 complete spinal cord injury case.

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are three world religions that occupy much of the world stage in health care, journalism, and media. Nurses frequently provide care for representatives of these groups. Culturally competent nurses recognize that there are differences and similarities within and between these religions.

Invasive feral swine can damage ecosystems, disrupt plant and animal populations, and transmit diseases. Monitoring of feral swine populations requires expensive and labor-intensive techniques such as aerial surveys, field surveys for sign, trail cameras, and verifying landowner reports. Environmental DNA (eDNA) provides an alternative method for locating feral swine.

Two groups of student participants were recruited to play either a roleplaying video game (World of Warcraft; experimental group) or a brain-training video game (CogniFit; control group). Participants were measured on their problem-solving skills before and after 20 hours of video gameplay.

Overall social network size, often the sum of common lifetime relationships, including children, family, and friends, has been linked to cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's Disease. However, little research has examined the association between network size composition and cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults in the context of race/ethnicity. We investigated the associations between the number of close children, family, and friends independently with executive function (EF) and memory across a subsample of non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic White participants who completed the Health and Retirement Study Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (N = 2,395).

Studies that assess mercury bioaccumulation in small carnivores in terrestrial habitats are limited. We quantified total mercury (THg) in American marten () that were harvested for fur in Michigan, US, during 2013 and 2014. We quantified THg (dry weight) in hair, kidney, and liver samples and further analyzed hair for potential demographic and ecological factors that influence THg bioaccumulation.

An Initiative Using Simulation to Aid in Retention of Advanced Cardiac Life Support Knowledge and Skills in an Emergency Department Nurse Residency Program.

Dimens Crit Care Nurs

August 2020

Denise Campbell, DNP, RN, ACNS-BC, CEN, CHSE, is an assistant professor, School of Nursing, University of Michigan-Flint, and a clinical nurse specialist, Emergency Center, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan. Patricia C. Clark, PhD, RN, FAAN, is a professor emeritus, Georgia State University, Atlanta.

Advanced colon cancer is extremely difficult to cure, underscoring the need to develop novel therapeutic agents. Prenylated curcumins that are semisynthetic curcumin derivatives with significant anti-cancer potential have been studied herein to assess their therapeutic potential for colon cancer and tested to this aim in vitro for their growth inhibitory properties against 5-fluorouracil + oxaliplatin resistant human colon cancer CR-HT29 and HCT-116 cells. The resulting most active product, gercumin (mono-O-geranylcurcumin), has been further tested for its synergistic effects with FOLFOX (a combination of 5-fluorouracil and oxaliplatin) on the same cell lines.

Reintroduction programs in which captive-bred or reared animals are released into natural habitats are considered a key approach for conservation; however, success rates have generally been low. Accounting for factors that enable individual animals to have a greater chance of survival can not only improve overall conservation outcomes but can also impact the welfare of the individual animals involved. One such factor may be individual personality, and personality research is a growing field.
