Purpose Of Review: There is a mental health crisis affecting youth, and the utility of existing treatments is often limited by lack of effectiveness and tolerability. The aim of this review is to report on outcomes of clinical trials for psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for adults with depression and MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for adults with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and discuss recommendations for exploring these treatments in adolescent populations.

Recent Findings: There have been encouraging data supporting the use of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for depression, including previously treatment-resistant symptoms.

Background: Patients with Inherited Retinal Diseases typically experience progressive, irreversible vision loss resulting in low vision and blindness. As a result, these patients are at high risk for vision-related disability and psychological distress, including depression and anxiety. Historically, the relationship between self-reported visual difficulty (encompassing metrics of vision-related disability and quality of life, among others) and vision-related anxiety has been regarded as an association and not a causal relationship.

In hormone receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer (HR+ MBC), endocrine resistance is commonly due to genetic alterations of ESR1, the gene encoding estrogen receptor alpha (ERα). While ESR1 point mutations (ESR1-MUT) cause acquired resistance to aromatase inhibition (AI) through constitutive activation, far less is known about the molecular functions and clinical consequences of ESR1 fusions (ESR1-FUS). This case series discusses 4 patients with HR+ MBC with ESR1-FUS in the context of the existing ESR1-FUS literature.

Article Synopsis
  • - This paper describes a randomized controlled trial testing a new technology-assisted cognitive behavioral therapy (T-CBT) called Raising Our Spirits Together (ROST) that’s designed to help people in rural areas cope with depression, using clergy as facilitators.
  • - Depression often goes untreated, especially in rural regions, due to issues like cost, limited access to professionals, and stigma; ROST aims to address these challenges by being more accessible and supportive.
  • - The study will involve 84 adults with depressive symptoms from rural Michigan, comparing outcomes of ROST to an enhanced control condition, with the primary measure being changes in depressive symptoms using a standard questionnaire at the end of treatment and three months later.

Cannabinoid use in patients seeking solid organ transplantation (SOT) is an important and unsettled matter which all transplantation clinicians regularly encounter. It is also a multifaceted, interprofessional issue, difficult for any specialty alone to adequately address in a research article or during clinical care. Such uncertainty lends itself to bias for or against cannabinoid use accompanied by inconsistent policies and procedures.

Objective: To best prevent depression relapse and reduce recurrence, an understanding of the factors associated with continued maintenance treatment is needed. This study compared factors associated with antidepressant nonadherence during the acute (ie, during the first 4 months) and maintenance (ie, during 12 months) treatment phase among older veterans with depression.

Methods: In this prospective, observational study of 278 older veterans with depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score ≥ 5), patients had been given a new antidepressant prescription between 2008 and 2011.

Assurex Health, Inc., 6960 Cintas Blvd, Mason, OH, 45040, USA; Myriad Genetics, Inc., 320 Wakara Way, Salt Lake City, UT, 84108, USA.

Current prescribing practices for major depressive disorder (MDD) produce limited treatment success. Although pharmacogenomics may improve outcomes by identifying genetically inappropriate medications, studies to date were limited in scope. Outpatients (N = 1167) diagnosed with MDD and with a patient- or clinician-reported inadequate response to at least one antidepressant were enrolled in the Genomics Used to Improve DEpression Decisions (GUIDED) trial - a rater- and patient-blind randomized controlled trial.

Previous research has suggested that forgiveness of self and forgiveness of others might function differently over the course of addiction recovery. However, we know little about the longitudinal process of these dimensions of forgiveness for individuals addressing alcohol-use disorders. Increased knowledge would inform the content and sequencing of intervention strategies.

October 2017

University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry, 9D 9816 University Hospital, 1500 E. Medical Center Dr. SPC 5118, Ann Arbor, MI, 48109-5118, USA.

Purpose Of Review: Physicians of all disciplines must rapidly adjust their clinical practices following the expansion of marijuana legalization across the country. Organ transplantation teams are uniquely struggling in this gray zone with eight states having passed laws explicitly banning the denial of transplant listing based on a patient's use of medical marijuana. In this review, we examine the clinical evidence of marijuana use in transplant patients to enable psychiatric providers to meaningfully contribute to the relevant medical and psychiatric aspects of this issue in a unique patient population.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a recurrent, episodic mood disorder for which there are no current diagnostic, prognostic or theranostic biomarkers. Two peripheral markers of the acute phase immune response, zinc and neopterin, are consistently associated with severity of depression in literature. Given gender differences in clinical presentation of BD and in inflammatory processes, we aimed to explore the interaction between gender and immune biomarkers to predict mood severity in BD.
