Objective: To compare the incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) between cefazolin 3 g and 2 g surgical prophylaxis in patients weighing ≥120 kg that undergo elective colorectal surgery.

Methods: A multicenter, retrospective cohort study was performed utilizing a validated database of elective colorectal surgeries in Michigan acute care hospitals. Adults weighing ≥120 kg who received cefazolin and metronidazole for surgical prophylaxis between 7/2012 and 6/2021 were included.

However, resistance to targeted KRAS inhibitors almost inevitably occurs; resistance can be driven by tumor cell-intrinsic changes or by changes in the microenvironment.

The role played by anionic channels in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is not known. Chloride channel accessory 1 (CLCA1) facilitates the activity of TMEM16A (Anoctamin-1), a Ca2+-dependent Cl- channel. We examined if CLCA1/TMEM16A had a role in DKD.

Objectives: The size, shape, and contractility of the heart's atrial chambers have not been evaluated in fetuses with growth restriction (FGR) or who are small-for-gestational-age (SGA) as defined by the Delphi consensus protocol. This study aimed to examine the atrial chambers using speckle tracking analysis to identify any changes that may be specific for either growth disturbance.

Methods: Sixty-three fetuses were evaluated with an estimated fetal weight <10th percentile who were classified as FGR or SGA based on the Delphi consensus protocol.

Simultaneous Concentration and T Mapping of Brain Metabolites by Fast Multi-Echo Spectroscopic Imaging.

The purpose of this study was to produce metabolite-specific T and concentration maps in a clinically compatible time frame. A multi-TE 2D MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) experiment (multi-echo single-shot MRSI [MESS-MRSI]) deployed truncated and partially sampled multi-echo trains from single scans and was combined with simultaneous multiparametric model fitting. It was tested in vivo for the brain in five healthy subjects.

Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer: A Dangerous Liaison.

The field of cardio-oncology has traditionally focused on the impact of cancer and its therapies on cardiovascular health. Mounting clinical and preclinical evidence, however, indicates that the reverse may also be true: cardiovascular disease can itself influence tumor growth and metastasis. Numerous epidemiological studies have reported that individuals with prevalent cardiovascular disease have an increased incidence of cancer.

Advancing Monogenic Diabetes Research and Clinical Care by Creating a Data Commons: The Precision Diabetes Consortium (PREDICT).

Monogenic diabetes mellitus (MDM) is a group of relatively rare disorders caused by pathogenic variants in key genes that result in hyperglycemia. Lack of identified cases, along with absent data standards, and limited collaboration across institutions have hindered research progress. To address this, the UChicago Monogenic Diabetes Registry (UCMDMR) and UChicago Data for the Common Good (D4CG) created a national consortium of MDM research institutions called the PREcision DIabetes ConsorTium (PREDICT).

Spectrum of Imaging Characteristics of Birdshot Chorioretinopathy.

Birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR) is a bilateral, chronic posterior uveitis with characteristic clinical and imaging findings. Multimodal imaging including optical coherence tomography, fluorescein, and indocyanine green angiography is useful in diagnosis, as well as monitoring disease activity. Cystoid macular edema, choroidal thickening and infiltration, ellipsoid loss, and vasculitis are important imaging markers for disease activity.

Moderators of interdependent psychological distress in cancer survivor-caregiver dyads.

Background: The purpose of this study was to test dyadic interdependence in psychological distress (anxiety and depressive symptoms) and explore moderators of interdependence among cancer survivors in treatment and their informal caregivers.

Methods: Cancer survivors and their caregivers completed measures of anxiety and depressive symptoms, social support, social isolation, and burden of other symptoms, at three points in time over the course of 17 weeks.

Results: In 315 dyads, depressive symptoms and anxiety were transmitted from caregivers to survivors.

Examining Lung Cancer Screening Uptake in the United States: Recent Research and Limitations of Public-Use Data.

Eligibility criteria for lung cancer screening (LCS) were updated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in 2022 following an updated recommendation from the United States Preventive Services Task Force. Recently, research has examined LCS use in the United States following this change, which centered on lowering the age to begin screening from 55 to 50 years and the smoking history threshold from 30 to 20 pack-years. These studies, including the accompanying article from Gudina and colleagues, have used the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System data, which are publicly available and nationally representative.

With data collected from various imaging techniques, studies have integrated different types of information ranging from brain structure, function, or metabolism. More recently, an emerging way to categorize imaging traits is through a metric hierarchy, including localized node-level measurements and interactive network-level metrics.

Modifiers and their impact on inherited retinal diseases: a review.

Background: The phenotypic variability of inherited conditions can be due to several factors including environmental, epigenetic, and genetic. One of those genetic factors is the presence of modifying loci which alter the phenotypic expression of a primary disease or phenotype-causing variant. Modifiers are known to affect penetrance, dominance, expressivity, and pleiotropy of disease.

Prevention and Management of Infectious Complications in Pediatric Patients With Cancer: A Survey Assessment of Current Practices Across Children's Oncology Group Institutions.

Introduction: While clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for pediatric oncology infection prophylaxis and management exist, few data describe actual management occurring at pediatric oncology centers.

Methods: An electronic survey querying infection management practices in nontransplant pediatric oncology patients was iteratively created by the Children's Oncology Group (COG) Cancer Control and Supportive Care Infectious Diseases Subcommittee and sent to leaders at all COG institutions, limiting each site to one response to represent their institution.

Results: The response rate was 57% (129/227 institutions).
