Background:  Two common surgical approaches for breast cancer are breast-conserving surgery and mastectomy with implant-based breast reconstruction (MIBR). However, for large tumors, an alternative to MIBR is oncoplastic surgery with volume replacement (OPSVR). We performed a comprehensive analysis comparing OPSVR with MIBR, with our aim to focus on the 30-day postoperative complications between these two techniques.

Is Oncoplastic Surgery Safe in High-Risk Breast Cancer Phenotypes?

J Surg Oncol

September 2024

Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery, Tufts Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Oncoplastic surgery (OPS) is a growing method for breast cancer treatment that combines larger partial mastectomy resections with reconstruction techniques, but there's limited evidence on its effectiveness, especially for high-risk types like TNBC and HER2+.
  • A study analyzed data from over 24,000 high-risk breast cancer patients to compare breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and surgical complications between OPS with radiotherapy (OPS + RT), partial mastectomy with radiotherapy (PM + RT), and total mastectomy without radiotherapy (MTX-RT).
  • Results showed that OPS + RT had the best 5-year BCSS rates (97.1%), lower complication rates (1

Design and Protocol of the Renal Anhydramnios Fetal Therapy (RAFT) Trial.

Clin Ther

August 2022

Center for Fetal Therapy, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland.

Purpose: Anhydramnios secondary to anuria before 22 weeks of gestational age and congenital bilateral renal agenesis before 26 weeks of gestational age are collectively referred to as early-pregnancy renal anhydramnios. Early-pregnancy renal anhydramnios occurs in at least 1 in 2000 pregnancies and is considered universally fatal when left untreated because of severe pulmonary hypoplasia precluding ex utero survival The Renal Anhydramnios Fetal Therapy (RAFT) trial is a nonrandomized, nonblinded, multicenter clinical trial designed to assess the efficacy, safety, and feasibility of amnioinfusions for patients with pregnancies complicated by early-pregnancy renal anhydramnios. The primary objective of this study is to determine the proportion of neonates surviving to successful dialysis, defined as use of a dialysis catheter for ≥14 days.

OGG1 co-inhibition antagonizes the tumor-inhibitory effects of targeting MTH1.

Redox Biol

April 2021

Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Miami Medical School, FL 33136, USA; Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Miami, FL 33136, USA. Electronic address:

Cancer cells develop protective adaptations against oxidative DNA damage, providing a strong rationale for targeting DNA repair proteins. There has been a high degree of recent interest in inhibiting the mammalian Nudix pyrophosphatase MutT Homolog 1 (MTH1). MTH1 degrades 8-oxo-dGTP, thus limiting its incorporation into genomic DNA.

Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, Pain Management and Hyperbaric Medicine, Team Health Research Institute, Englewood Medical Center, Englewood, New Jersey, USA.

Background: Hemoglobin-Based Oxygen Carriers (HBOCs) can act as an "oxygen bridge" in acute severe anemia when transfusion is indicated, but not possible. We present data on 10 Expanded Access (EA) patients treated with high cumulative doses of Hemopure (HBOC-201), to assess the ability of HBOC-201 to safely treat life threatening anemia in situations where high volumes of product were administered over an extended period of time.

Study Design And Methods: Inclusion in this study required that the patient receive at least 10 units of HBOC-201 between 2014 and 2017 under the FDA-sanctioned EA program.

Several psychiatric disorders involve abnormalities of interoception and associated neural circuitry centered on the insula. The development of interventions modulating interoceptive circuits could lead to novel treatment approaches for these disorders. The 5-HT3 receptor antagonist ondansetron is a good candidate for the modulation of interoceptive circuits, as 5-HT3 receptors are located abundantly on sensory pathways and ondansetron has shown some clinical utility in disorders characterized by sensory and interoceptive abnormalities.

Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia: Can We Agree on a Definition?

Am J Perinatol

May 2018

Division of Neonatology, Department of Pediatrics, University of Miami Medical School, Miami, Florida.

The advances in obstetric and neonatal care over the last half century have resulted in changes in pathophysiology and clinical presentation of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). In contrast to the original description of BPD by Northway et al as a severe lung injury in relatively mature preterm infants, the most common form of BPD currently is characterized by chronic respiratory insufficiency in extremely preterm infants. This evolution in the presentation of BPD, along with changes in respiratory support strategies such as increased use of nasal cannula oxygen, has presented a unique challenge to find a definition that describes the severity of lung damage and predict the long-term respiratory outcomes with some accuracy.
