Background: Anesthesiology journals appear to have been progressively publishing a smaller percentage of operating room (OR) management studies. Similarly, non-anesthesiologists have increasingly been authors of these publications. Five hypotheses were formulated to evaluate these impressions based on 2 of the authors' curation of an online, comprehensive bibliography of OR management articles and corresponding referenced course materials.

Background: Disparities exist among patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Non-White race is regarded as a negative predictor of expected treatment and overall survival. Data suggest that Academic Research Programs (ARP) provide better outcomes for minorities, but ethnic/minority outcomes are underreported.

The purpose of this case-matched study was to determine how frequently fibromyalgia is associated with different paroxysmal neurological disorders and explore the utility of fibromyalgia as a predictor for the diagnosis of psychogenic non-epileptic seizures. The billing diagnosis codes of 1,730 new, non-selected patient encounters were reviewed over a three-year period for an epileptologist in a neurology clinic to identify all patients with historical diagnoses of fibromyalgia. The frequency with which epileptic seizures, psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, and physiological non-epileptic events were comorbid with fibromyalgia was assessed.

In the specialty of surgical hair restoration, men comprise more than 90% of the patients treated; however, in the last few years the number of women undergoing the procedure has increased significantly. The reasons for this growth are many and include the increase in public awareness of the efficacy of hair transplantation from such sources as the media, the Internet, advertising and word of mouth. More importantly, advances in technique have significantly improved results, increasing the confidence level in women to undergo the procedure and in hair transplant specialists to offer it.

Department of Hematology and Oncology, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami College of Medicine, 1475 NW 12th Avenue (D8-4) Rm. 3510, Miami, FL 33136, USA.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is the most routinely administered drug in the treatment of colon cancer. The main mechanism of the drug is not completely understood and its method of administration has been strongly disputed. A 24-hour infusion of 5-FU has clinically yielded better response rates and lower toxicities in comparison to bolus administration, but an exploration into possible mechanisms needs to be performed.

In the field of surgical hair restoration, there is probably no greater challenge than treating the individual with advanced male pattern hair loss. Recent developments in follicular unit grafting and recognition of the natural appearance of the transplanted frontal forelock have now made it possible to obtain excellent, undetectable results in these patients. Over a 22-month period, the onset correlating with the time when the author began to use the technique of follicular unit grafting, 61 of 322 hair transplant procedures (approximately 20 percent) performed for male pattern hair loss were on men with, or at high risk of developing, advanced male pattern hair loss.

Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, University of Miami College of Medicine, Fla., USA.

Despite the frequency with which it occurs, little has been written in the scientific literature on the treatment of infraorbital dark circles. I have developed a technique that simultaneously treats the 2 contributing causes of these circles: hyperpigmentation of skin and pseudoherniation of orbital fat. The technique involves simultaneous transconjunctival blepharoplasty and deep-depth phenol chemical peel.

Surgical hair restoration has been performed as a treatment for male pattern hair loss for more than 40 years. These patients may have had procedures performed in the past with antiquated techniques or performed recently with substandard techniques.
