Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are frequently overlapping neurodevelopmental disorders. Individuals in whom the disorders are comorbid show more severe impairment because of deficits in the processing of social situations, adaptive functioning, and executive control than individuals with either disorder alone.

Objective: This open-label pilot study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy and tolerability of risperidone and aripiprazole for treating ADHD symptoms in patients with both ASD and ADHD over the course of 24 weeks of treatment.

Epigenetic modifications can affect numerous mechanisms used by neoplastic cells to evade immune control. In melanoma epigenetic defects, caused by dysregulations in the expression of genome writers, erasers, or readers, play a significant role in the reduced expression of molecules required for efficient immune recognition as well as antigen presentation and processing. Alterations in gene expression were identified in tumor-associated antigens (TAAs), human leukocyte antigen (HLA) complex, co-stimulatory/accessory molecules, antigen processing machinery (APM), and NKG2D ligands that have shown to be silenced or down-regulated in melanoma.

b Department of Human Pathology, Unit of Clinical Microbiology , Policlinico Universitario "G. Martino," Messina , Italy.

Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is responsible of the continuously increasing viral infections in humans. In a previous study we demonstrated that the exopolysaccharide produced by Bacillus licheniformis strain B3-15 (EPS-B3-15), was able to hinder the HSV-2 replication in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and this antiviral activity appear to be related to a significant stimulation of the Th1-cytokines. In this study we analyse the role of EPS-B3-15 on Th2 cytokine production by PBMC infected or not with HSV-2.

Blood Cancer J

September 2015

Department of Haematology-Oncology 'L. and A. Seràgnoli' - S. Orsola Malpighi Hospital, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a non-standard, intermittent imatinib treatment in elderly patients with Philadelphia-positive chronic myeloid leukaemia and to answer the question on which dose should be used once a stable optimal response has been achieved. Seventy-six patients aged ⩾65 years in optimal and stable response with ⩾2 years of standard imatinib treatment were enrolled in a study testing a regimen of intermittent imatinib (INTERIM; 1-month on and 1-month off). With a minimum follow-up of 6 years, 16/76 patients (21%) have lost complete cytogenetic response (CCyR) and major molecular response (MMR), and 16 patients (21%) have lost MMR only.

Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Endocrine Unit, University of Messina, Padiglione H, 4 Piano, AOU Policlinico Universitario "G. Martino", via Consolare Valeria, 1, 98125, Messina, Italy.

Purpose: p53, which is encoded by the tumor suppressor gene TP53, plays a crucial role in the regulation of mechanisms of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Some SNPs of TP53, involving a different apoptotic ability of p53, have been associated with increased susceptibility to develop autoimmune diseases as well as cancer. We investigated the genotypic distribution of TP53 exon 4 SNPs in a cohort of Caucasian patients affected by Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT).

Background: Previous guidelines for the management of thyroid nodules and cancers were geared toward adults. Compared with thyroid neoplasms in adults, however, those in the pediatric population exhibit differences in pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and long-term outcomes. Furthermore, therapy that may be recommended for an adult may not be appropriate for a child who is at low risk for death but at higher risk for long-term harm from overly aggressive treatment.

Research Centre for Extreme Environments and Extremophiles, Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Messina, V.le F. Stagno d'Alcontres 31, 98166 Messina, Italy.

Extreme marine environments, such as the submarine shallow vents of the Eolian Islands (Italy), offer an almost unexplored source of microorganisms producing unexploited and promising biomolecules for pharmaceutical applications. Thermophilic and thermotolerant bacilli isolated from Eolian vents are able to produce exopolysaccharides (EPSs) with antiviral and immunomodulatory effects against Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). HSV-2 is responsible for the most common and continuously increasing viral infections in humans.

Increased nuchal traslucency in normal karyotype fetuses.

J Prenat Med

April 2011

Policlinico Universitario "G. Martino", Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Messina, Italy.

Nuchal traslucency (NT) measurement between 11 and 14 weeks' gestation is a reliable marker for chromosomal abnormalities, including trisomy 21. However, even if conventional karyotyping is normal, increased NT is a predictive value of adverse pregnancy outcome, because it is associated with several fetal malformations, congenital heart defects, genetic syndromes, intrauterine death and miscarriages; the majority of these structural anomalies are undetectable before birth. The risk is proportional to the nuchal translucency thickness, in fact it statistically increases after measurement reaching 3.

Dysregulation of the Fas/FasL system in mononuclear cells recovered from peritoneal fluid of women with endometriosis.

J Reprod Immunol

December 2011

Department of Gynecological Sciences, School of Medicine, Policlinico Universitario G. Martino, Via C. Valeria -Gazzi-, University of Messina, 98125 Messina, Italy.

In endometriosis, regurgitating endometrial cells fail to undergo apoptosis and implant themselves outside the uterus, particularly in the peritoneum. We studied Fas and FasL behaviour by evaluating the percentages of mFas and mFasL-bearing mononuclear cells from peritoneal fluid, the level of Fas and FasL gene expression at both mRNA and protein levels in the same cells, and the sFas and sFasL values in peritoneal fluid of 80 endometriotic women, at four stages of disease severity. We found no variation in percentage of mFas-bearing mononuclear cells; high and unchanging levels of Fas mRNA and protein, and high and invariable sFas values.
