Functional neurological disorders in Parkinson disease.

Objective: To ascertain demographic and clinical features of Parkinson disease (PD) associated with functional neurological features.

Methods: A standardised form was used to extract data from electronic records of 53 PD patients with associated functional neurological disorders (PD-FND) across eight movement disorders centres in the USA, Canada and Europe. These subjects were matched for age, gender and disease duration to PD patients without functional features (PD-only).

Firstly described by Robert Douglas Sweet in 1964, febrile neutrophilic dermatosis is a disabling, not only cutaneous disorder, clinically characterised by fever and painful erythematous nodules, with a typical background of neutrophilia. Sweet's syndrome (SS) is a chronic inflammatory reactive disorder of unknown cause and incompletely established pathogenesis, although an interplay between genetic and environmental factors, including infections, is likely to occur. A significant part of cases has been demonstrated to be linked with malignancies, especially in the hematologic setting.

NSAIDs utilization for musculoskeletal indications in elderly patients with cerebro/cardiovascular disease.

Objectives: To describe NSAID utilization for musculoskeletal conditions in a large cohort of Italian elderly with cerebro/cardiovascular disease, a population in which NSAIDs should be generally avoided due to the prothrombotic potential.

Methods: Administrative data from five Italian geographic areas were analyzed. Patients aged ≥ 65 with a cerebro/cardiovascular event recorded between 2008 and 2011 (cohort entry) were selected.

Endoparasites detected in faecal samples from dogs and cats referred for routine clinical visit in Sardinia, Italy.

This study aimed to update data on the prevalence of intestinal and lung parasitic infections in owned dogs and cats in Sardinia, Italy. Examinations on faecal samples from 619 dogs and 343 cats routinely referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Sassari were performed between the years of 2011 and 2015. Individual faecal samples were analysed using the Wisconsin technique for copro-microscopic examination and the Baermann technique for the presence of lungworm larvae.

The high potency and tolerability of the currently available antiretroviral drugs has modified HIV-1 infection from a life-threatening disease to a chronic illness. Nevertheless, some issues still remain open to optimize the management of HIV-1 infected patients in term of maintenance of virological suppression over time, identifying patients that could benefit from simplification therapy, and reducing co-mordibities driven by chronic inflammation. The availability of robust and affordable virological and immunological markers can help in solving these issues by providing information on the burden of HIV-1 reservoir in all the anatomical compartments in which the virus replicates as well as on persistent inflammation, immune activation and senescence despite successful virological suppression.

Daily rhythmicity of behavior of nine species of South American feral felids in captivity.

The authors analyzed the daily activity rhythms of the domestic cat and of eight of the ten feral felid species that are indigenous to South America. All species showed daily rhythmicity of activity in captivity under a natural light-dark cycle. The robustness of the rhythmicity varied from species to species, but the grand mean of 34% was within the range of robustness previously described for mammalian species ranging in size from mice to cattle.

Role of Two-Dimensional Speckle-Tracking Echocardiography Strain in the Assessment of Right Ventricular Systolic Function and Comparison with Conventional Parameters.

Despite the already well-known role the right side of the heart plays in many diseases, right ventricular (RV) function has only recently been carefully considered. Echocardiography is the first-line diagnostic technique for the assessment of the right ventricle and right atrium, whereas cardiac magnetic resonance is considered the gold standard but is limited by cost and availability. According to the current guidelines, systolic RV function should be assessed by several conventional measurements, but the efficacy of these parameters as diagnostic and prognostic tools has been questioned by many authors.

Introduction: The European Medical Information Framework consortium has assembled electronic health record (EHR) databases for dementia research. We calculated dementia prevalence and incidence in 25 million persons from 2004 to 2012.

Methods: Six EHR databases (three primary care and three secondary care) from five countries were interrogated.

Sonochemical synthesis and characterization of microrod to nanoparticle of new mixed-ligand zinc(II) fumarate metal-organic polymer.

Micro and nano-structures of a new mixed-ligand Zn(II) fumarate metal-organic polymer, {[Zn(tptz)(fum)].DMF} (1), (tptz=2,4,6-tris(2-pyridyl)-s-triazine, fum=fumarate, DMF=N,N-dimethylforamide), were synthesized by sonochemical method. These new micro and nano-structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), IR spectroscopy and elemental analyses.

How do wettability, zeta potential and hydroxylation degree affect the biological response of biomaterials?

It is well known that composition, electric charge, wettability and roughness of implant surfaces have great influence on their interaction with the biological fluids and tissues, but systematic studies of different materials in the same experimental conditions are still lacking in the scientific literature. The aim of this research is to investigate the correlations between some surface characteristics (wettability, zeta potential and hydroxylation degree) and the biological response (protein adsorption, blood wettability, cell and bacterial adhesion) to some model biomaterials. The resulting knowledge can be applied for the development of future innovative surfaces for implantable biomaterials.

Probing Intermolecular Interactions in Phospholipid Bilayers by Far-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Fast thermal fluctuations and low frequency phonon modes are thought to play a part in the dynamic mechanisms of many important biological functions in cell membranes. Here we report a detailed far-infrared study of the molecular subpicosecond motions of phospholipid bilayers at various hydrations. We show that these systems sustain several low frequency collective modes and deduce that they arise from vibrations of different lipids interacting through intermolecular van der Waals forces.
