In this work, the suitability of a new polymer family has been investigated as capillary coatings for the analysis of peptides and basic proteins by CE. This polymer family has been designed to minimize or completely prevent protein-capillary wall interactions and to modify the EOF. These coating materials are linear polymeric chains bearing as side cationizable moiety a dentronic triamine derived from N,N,N',N'-tetraethyldiethylenetriamine (TEDETA), which is linked to the backbone through a spacer (unit labeled as TEDETAMA).

Properties of a soft-core model of methanol: an integral equation theory and computer simulation study.

J Chem Phys

October 2014

Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana, Chair of Physical Chemistry, Večna pot 113, SI-1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Thermodynamic and structural properties of a coarse-grained model of methanol are examined by Monte Carlo simulations and reference interaction site model (RISM) integral equation theory. Methanol particles are described as dimers formed from an apolar Lennard-Jones sphere, mimicking the methyl group, and a sphere with a core-softened potential as the hydroxyl group. Different closure approximations of the RISM theory are compared and discussed.

UMR Structure et Réactivité des Systèmes Moléculaires Complexes, Nancy University, CNRS, Nancy, France.

We investigated the short-wavelength longitudinal and transverse collective dynamics of the fluid and gel phases of phospholipid bilayers by means of molecular dynamics simulation. Similarly to a crystal, the spectrum of collective excitations in a bilayer consists of longitudinal and transverse acoustic modes, though modified by disorder. Beside acoustic modes, a series of broad dispersionless excitations are revealed.

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a remnant of fetal circulation commonly found in healthy population. However, a large number of clinical conditions have been linked to PFO, the most important being ischemic strokes of undetermined cause (cryptogenic strokes) and migraine, especially migraine with aura. Coexistent atrial septal aneurysm, size of PFO, degree of the shunt, shunt at rest, pelvic deep vein thrombosis, and prothrombotic states (G20210A prothrombin gene mutation, Factor V Leiden mutation, MTHFR: C677T, basal homocystine, recent surgery, trauma, or use of contraceptives) could enhance stroke risk in subjects with PFO.

Transcellular biosynthesis of eicosanoid lipid mediators.

Biochim Biophys Acta

April 2015

Department of Pharmacological and Biomolecular Sciences, Università degli Studi di Milano, Milan, Italy; IBIM, CNR, Palermo, Italy. Electronic address:

The synthesis of oxygenated eicosanoids is the result of the coordinated action of several enzymatic activities, from phospholipase A2 that releases the polyunsaturated fatty acids from membrane phospholipids, to primary oxidative enzymes, such as cyclooxygenases and lipoxygenases, to isomerases, synthases and hydrolases that carry out the final synthesis of the biologically active metabolites. Cells possessing the entire enzymatic machinery have been studied as sources of bioactive eicosanoids, but early on evidence proved that biosynthetic intermediates, albeit unstable, could move from one cell type to another. The biosynthesis of bioactive compounds could therefore be the result of a coordinated effort by multiple cell types that has been named transcellular biosynthesis of the eicosanoids.

Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, "Angelo Nocivelli" Institute for Molecular Medicine, University of Brescia, Italy.

Hyper-IgE syndrome (HIES) is a genetic disorder characterized by elevated IgE serum levels, mostly due to mutations in STAT3 or DOCK8. Despite clinical heterogeneity between the two forms of the disease, clinical manifestations may not be conclusive for diagnosis and immunological differences are still unclear. Herein, we performed a detailed characterization of the T- and B-cell compartments by flow cytometry in seven HIES patients with homozygous DOCK8 mutations and six patients presenting heterozygous STAT3 mutations.

Identification of a new series of amides as non-covalent proteasome inhibitors.

Eur J Med Chem

April 2014

Dipartimento di Scienze del Farmaco e dei Prodotti per la Salute, Università degli Studi di Messina, Viale Annunziata, 98168 Messina, Italy.

Proteasome inhibition has emerged as an important therapeutic strategy for the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM) and some forms of lymphoma, with potential application in other types of cancers. 20S proteasome consists of three different catalytic activities known as chymotrypsin-like (ChT-L), trypsin-like (T-L), and, post-glutamyl peptide hydrolyzing (PGPH) or caspase-like (C-L), which are located respectively on the β5, β2, and β1 subunits of each heptameric β rings. Currently a wide number of covalent proteasome inhibitors are reported in literature; however, the less widely investigated non-covalent inhibitors might be a promising alternative to employ in therapy, because of the lack of all drawbacks and side-effects related to irreversible inhibition.

Making fingers and words count in a cognitive robot.

Front Behav Neurosci

February 2014

Centre for Robotics and Neural Systems, School of Computing and Mathematics, Plymouth University Plymouth, UK.

Evidence from developmental as well as neuroscientific studies suggest that finger counting activity plays an important role in the acquisition of numerical skills in children. It has been claimed that this skill helps in building motor-based representations of number that continue to influence number processing well into adulthood, facilitating the emergence of number concepts from sensorimotor experience through a bottom-up process. The act of counting also involves the acquisition and use of a verbal number system of which number words are the basic building blocks.

Detailed elucidation of hydrocarbon contamination in food products by using solid-phase extraction and comprehensive gas chromatography with dual detection.

Anal Chim Acta

April 2013

Dipartimento Farmaco-chimico, Facoltà di Farmacia, Università degli Studi di Messina, viale Annunziata, 98168 Messina, Italy; Centro Integrato di Ricerca (C.I.R.), Università Campus-Biomedico, Via Álvaro del Portillo, 21, 00128 Roma, Italy.

The present work is focused on the development/optimization of a comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography method, with dual detection [flame ionization (FID) and mass spectrometric], for the simultaneous identification and quantification of mineral-oil contaminants in a variety of food products. The two main classes of contaminants, namely saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, were previously fractionated on a manually-packed silver silica solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge. The quantitative results were compared with those obtained by performing a large volume injection, in a GC-FID system, after the same SPE process and by an on-line liquid-gas chromatography method, with very similar results observed.
