August 2018

Department of Gastroenterology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Mersin, Mersin, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are significant types of inflammatory bowel disease, and this study aimed to explore the link between specific gene polymorphisms and IBD in Turkish patients using PCR-RFLP analysis.
  • The study involved 62 CD patients, 76 UC patients, and 152 healthy individuals, focusing on two gene variants: CTLA-4 (+49A/G) and NOD2/CARD15 (N852S).
  • Results showed no significant association between the tested gene polymorphisms and either CD or UC in the Turkish population, with various genotype frequencies observed among CD, UC patients, and controls.

Introduction: Microvolt T-wave alternans (TWA) is known to be useful in prediction of ischemia and sudden death in high-risk populations and there are no studies in children with chronic renal failure (CRF). Cardiac problems seem to be responsible for an important part of death in children and young adults with CRF. The aim of this study is to evaluate Holter microvolts TWA measurements in children with CRF comparing to the control group.

Background: Although the role of neurotrophins such as nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in nasal polyps development has been studied, the contribution of neurotrophin-3 has not been evaluated yet. This study aimed to investigate the possible role of neurotrophin-3 in nasal polyps pathogenesis.

Methods: The study group comprised 70 non-allergic nasal polyps patients and the control group consisted of 53 patients with middle turbinate concha bullosa.

Article Synopsis
  • Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto is becoming more common in hospital infections, especially in regions like southern Europe, South America, and Asia, prompting a study on its genetic diversity and antifungal resistance in 170 patient strains from Turkey.
  • The researchers used specific genetic techniques to identify the strains and evaluated their resistance to antifungal drugs, finding that posaconazole, caspofungin, and amphotericin B were the most effective treatments.
  • They discovered a high level of genetic diversity among the strains and emphasized the need for strong surveillance and infection-control measures to protect patients from this pathogen.

If left untreated, rhinosinusitis can rarely cause a devastating complication irreversible blindness (IB). Despite new technologies in endoscopic sinus surgery and use of new broad-spectrum antibiotics, IB outcome is still a problem for surgically treated orbital complication of paranasal sinus infection (OCPSI) patients, and factors leading to IB outcome are not actually known. The aim of this study was to assess the factors leading to the IB outcome for surgically treated OCPSI patients.

Dermatophytes include fungal species that infect humans, as well as those that also infect other animals or only grow in the environment. The dermatophyte species is a frequent cause of skin infection in immunocompetent individuals. While members of the species complex have been further categorized based on various morphologies, their population structure and ability to undergo sexual reproduction are not well understood.

The incidence of fungal diseases has been increasing since 1980, and is associated with excessive morbidity and mortality, particularly among immunosuppressed patients. Of the known 625 pathogenic fungal species, infections caused by the genera Aspergillus, Candida, Cryptococcus, and Trichophyton are responsible for more than 300 million estimated episodes of acute or chronic infections worldwide. In addition, a rather neglected group of opportunistic fungi known as black yeasts and their filamentous relatives cause a wide variety of recalcitrant infections in both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed hosts.
