: Sleep apnea and nocturnal bruxism belong to sleep disorders that can affect the quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects on patients with moderate sleep apnea and nocturnal bruxism of Botox injection as monotherapy or associated with wearing thermoformed occlusal splints and to determine the patients' satisfaction degree after the applied treatments. : The selected patients for study were divided into two groups: in the first group, the patients ( = 18) treatment consisted of injecting Botox (Allergan) into the masseter muscle as monotherapy; in the second group, the patients ( = 18) benefited from associated therapy, Botox injections in masseter muscle, and the wear of thermoformed occlusal splints.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how hard dental structures in teeth with abfraction lesions react to different types of occlusal loads.
  • A 65-year-old patient experiencing pain in her jaw and lower right premolars underwent a 3D imaging examination, followed by a finite element analysis to assess structural integrity.
  • Results showed that the cervical third of premolars is especially vulnerable to inclined occlusal loads, which caused significantly higher stress than axial loads, highlighting the importance of FEA in dental treatment planning.

Inflammatory and Metabolic Signaling Interfaces of the Hypertrophic and Senescent Chondrocyte Phenotypes Associated with Osteoarthritis.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2023

Department of Rheumatology, Physical and Medical Rehabilitation, George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Targu Mures, 38 Gheorghe Marinescu Street, 540139 Targu Mures, Romania.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a complex disease of whole joints with progressive cartilage matrix degradation and chondrocyte transformation. The inflammatory features of OA are reflected in increased synovial levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and VEGF, higher levels of TLR-4 binding plasma proteins and increased expression of IL-15, IL-18, IL-10 and Cox2, in cartilage. Chondrocytes in OA undergo hypertrophic and senescent transition; in these states, the expression of Sox-9, Acan and Col2a1 is suppressed, whereas the expression of RunX2, HIF-2α and MMP-13 is significantly increased.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a heterogenous systemic inflammatory disorder that affects peripheral joints and skin, but also causes inflammation at entheseal sites, digits (dactylitis) and the axial skeleton. Despite considerable advances, our understanding of the pathogenesis and management of PsA is hampered by its complex clinical expression. We enrolled patients who met the ClASsification for Psoriatic Arthritis (CASPAR) criteria for PsA ( = 17), and healthy controls ( = 13).

We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of V600E mutation in a series of 127 papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) cases as a single factor, and in synergic interaction with other standard risk factors. V600E mutation was assessed by real-time PCR. Event-free survival (EFS) was calculated between the date of the first evaluation and the date of occurrence of an adverse event or the date of the last known status.

Sulfonamides are among the most used drugs in beekeeping due to their effectiveness, despite their long-term persistence in tissues. Bee honey containing such residues poses numerous risks to human health. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects on immunological and hematological parameters of Wistar rats produced by sulfonamide residues in bee honey, through the evaluation of various blood parameters such as triiodothyronine and thyroxine levels, hematocrit, hemoglobin, red blood cell count and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration in a given volume of erythrocytes following administration of sulfonamide-containing honey.

Programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) immunohistochemical (IHC) status is used to predict which patients with metastatic urothelial carcinoma (UC) will respond to immunotherapy. We aimed to compare QR1(Quartett), 22C3 (Dako), and SP263 (Ventana) detection of PD-L1 expression in muscle-invasive UCs and determine the best scoring algorithm for assessment of PD-L1 expression when using the QR1 clone. Our study included 69 UCs.

Phenolic compounds are a widespread group of secondary metabolites found in all plants, representing the most desirable antioxidants due to their potential to be used as additives in the food industry (inhibition of lipid oxidation), and in cosmetology and medicine (protection against oxidative stress). In recent years, demand for the identification of edible sources rich in phenolic antioxidants, as well as the development of new natural plant products to be used as dietary supplements or pharmaceuticals, has been a great preoccupation. At present, from the "circular economy" perspective, there is an increased interest to use agricultural waste resources to produce high-value compounds.

Polyphenols are one of the largest and most widespread groups of secondary metabolites in the plants world. These compounds are of particular interest due to their occurrence and the properties they possess. The main sources of phenolic compounds are fruits and vegetables, but lately, more and more studies refer to woody vascular plants, especially to bark, as an important source of phenolic compounds with a potential biological effect.

Scleroderma, known also as systemic sclerosis (SSc), is a severe disease associated with high mortality rates, and right ventricular (RV) remodeling and dysfunction, along with pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH), are among the most important internal organ manifestations of this disease. PAH has a higher prevalence in patients with SSc compared to the general population and represents a significant predictor of mortality in SSc. In patients with SSc, the morphological remodeling and alteration of RV function begin even before the setting of PAH and lead to development of a specific adaptive pattern of the RV which is different from the one recorded in patients with IAPH.

Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Physical Chemistry, University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Tîrgu Mureş, Gh. Marinescu Street, 38, 540139, Târgu Mureş, Romania.

Lacosamide is a newer anticonvulsant and is the only one that enhances the slow inactivation of voltage gated sodium channels. It is also claimed to have disease-modifying potential, but its pharmacokinetic properties have been much less discussed in the literature. In rats, lacosamide shows restricted distribution to tissues, and the brain-to-plasma partition coefficient (K) is only 0.

High-risk follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the tonsil mimicking nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is often misdiagnosed as a carcinoma or malignant lymphoma due to morphological variability. In FDCS application of routine antibody panels without CD21 and CD23 increases the misdiagnosis rate, because the tumor cells often show focal positivity for usual immunohistochemical markers. Our new case showed a distinct picture due to the uncommon tumor architecture, with extensive areas of necrosis and hemorrhage, the presence of nuclear atypia, and an increased mitotic count and Ki-67 index.

Continuous administration of levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG-Duodopa(®), Abbott Laboratories), which has been available in Romania since 2009, represents an option for treating patients with advanced PD. Our primary objective was to report changes in motor complications after initiation of LCIG therapy.
