Chronic venous disease (CVD) affects millions of people and negatively impacting the patient's quality of life (QoL) and most of the patients are diagnosed with CVD in advanced stages. The impact of newly diagnosed CVD on QoL has not been evaluated by other studies in Romania. The aim of this study was to assess the QoL for adult patients newly diagnosed with CVD addressing to the General Practitioner's (GP) office in Romania between June to August 2016.

Tetraclinis articulata essential oil mitigates cognitive deficits and brain oxidative stress in an Alzheimer's disease amyloidosis model.

Background: Tetraclinis articulata is used in traditional medicine and has been reported to possess antibacterial, antifungal, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Purpose: This study investigated the effects of T. articulata essential oil on memory and brain oxidative stress in amyloid-β peptide 1-42 (Aβ1-42)-induced an Alzheimer's disease amyloidosis model.

Nail bed solitary neurofibroma: A case report and literature review.

Rationale: Nail bed solitary neurofibroma is an extremely rare tumor, with only 9 cases recorded in the literature so far.

Patient Concern: We present the case of a 42-year-old female patient, with a history of a slowly growing tumor in the nail bed of the left index and no clinical features of type I neurofibromatosis.

Diagnosis: Nail bed solitary neurofibroma.

Impact of coronary plaque geometry on plaque vulnerability and its association with the risk of future cardiovascular events in patients with chest pain undergoing coronary computed tomographic angiography-the GEOMETRY study: Protocol for a prospective clinical trial.

Introduction: Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) has emerged as a valuable noninvasive imaging tool for assessing atheromatous plaque morphology and composition, and several CCTA features have been validated as reliable indicators of the plaque-associated risk. However, the role of lesion geometry as a CCTA feature of plaque vulnerability has not been investigated so far.

Material And Methods: Here we present the study protocol of the GEOMETRY trial, a prospective, single center, cohort study in which we aim to investigate the relationship between plaque geometry (as expressed by cross-sectional and longitudinal plaque eccentricity) and the risk for major adverse cardiac events (MACE) during 2 years of follow-up, in order to validate plaque eccentricity as a new CCTA marker of coronary plaque vulnerability.

The predictive value of malnutrition for functional and cognitive status in elderly hemodialysis patients.

Objective: The study aims to objectively and precisely describe, in elderly dialysis patients from a single center, the prevalence of malnutrition and severe cognitive/functional impairment and to establish the prognostic role of malnutrition assessment for patient's severe cognitive/functional status.

Purpose: A timely pharmacoinvasive strategy consisting of thrombolytic therapy (TT) plays a pivotal role in three major scenarios: acute ischemic stroke (AIS), acute myocardial infarction (STEMI), and massive pulmonary embolism (PE). Presence of advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) (estimated glomerular filtration rate < 30 mL/min/1.73 m2), known to disturb thrombotic/thrombolytic equilibrium, causes difficulties for clinicians in evaluating risk-benefit balance, as current guidelines do not address the relationship between TT and the advanced CKD.

Which anticoagulants should be used for stroke prevention in non-valvular atrial fibrillation and severe chronic kidney disease?

Purpose Of Review: Non-valvular atrial fibrillation is common in patients with severe chronic kidney disease (CKD) and historically patients have been treated with vitamin K antagonists (VKA). However, these agents have questionable efficacy and are associated with increased bleeding risk. Non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOAC) have advantages over VKA in early stage CKD.

New insights into the organophosphate-induced intermediate syndrome.

Acute organophosphate (OP) poisoning can be deadlier than any other type of chemical poisoning. So far, only a few cases have been described that include extensive neurological complications. We present an outstanding case of severe oral OP poisoning with intermediate syndrome developed on the fourth day after hospital admission.

Comparative efficacy of oral contraceptive versus local treatment versus intense pulsed light combined with vacuum in endocrine acne in women.

Acne is the most common affection of adolescents, although it can be also found in adult women. Our study was aimed at the comparative assessment of three different therapies over a three-month period, applied to women with moderate comedogenic and papulo-pustular endocrine acne. In the study 116 female patients with endocrine localized face acne were included and divided into three groups: group I with 42 patients was treated with a combination of contraceptive pill + local treatment + pulsed-vacuum light; group II with 38 patients was treated with contraceptives and pulsed-vacuum light and group III with 36 patients was treated only with local treatment.

Curriculum for neurogastroenterology and motility training: A report from the joint ANMS-ESNM task force.

Although neurogastroenterology and motility (NGM) disorders are some of the most frequent disorders encountered by practicing gastroenterologists, a structured competency-based training curriculum developed by NGM experts is lacking. The American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society (ANMS) and the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (ESNM) jointly evaluated the components of NGM training in North America and Europe. Eleven training domains were identified within NGM, consisting of functional gastrointestinal disorders, visceral hypersensitivity and pain pathways, motor disorders within anatomic areas (esophagus, stomach, small bowel and colon, anorectum), mucosal disorders (gastro-esophageal reflux disease, other mucosal disorders), consequences of systemic disease, consequences of therapy (surgery, endoscopic intervention, medications, other therapy), and transition of pediatric patients into adult practice.

Particularities of the management and the treatment in a rare sepsis with Candida tropicalis of a Collodion baby: Case report.

Rationale: Collodion baby is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. It can be the first expression of some forms of ichthyosis.

Patient Concerns: The authors present the case of a newborn diagnosed with severe Collodion baby syndrome who required prolonged hospitalization in the intensive care unit because of infectious complications like the fungal sepsis and other bacterial superinfections.

The impact of exercise on physical function, cardiovascular outcomes and quality of life in chronic kidney disease patients: a systematic review.

The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is increasing steadily. CKD does not only relate to morbidity and mortality but also has impact on quality of life, depression and malnutrition. Such patients often have significantly decreased physical activity.

Kidney transplantation in Romania: two transplant centers experience.

Purpose: Kidney graft survival rates improved from decade to decade, but data about factors that affect patient and graft survival remain challenging and even controversial.

Methods: We analyzed retrospectively data from kidney transplanted patients followed in two Romanian transplant centers (Iasi and Bucharest)-new programmes specifically developed after 1989 to cover transplantation requirements for two-thirds of Romania. We used a composite survival outcome defined as 50% reduction in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), return to dialysis or death.

Perception and use of Pap smear screening among rural and urban women in Romania.

Background: In 2012 the National Screening Program for all women between 25 and 64 years of age was launched in Romania. Public awareness is an important factor in the success of a screening program. For this reason, we intended to assess the perception and the level of awareness of Romanian women regarding the Pap test in the prevention of cervical cancer.
