Sci Rep

August 2024

Ophthalmology Department, Faculty of Medicine, University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Gr. T. Popa" Iasi, University Street No 16, 700115, Iasi, Romania.

In ophthalmology, artificial intelligence methods show great promise due to their potential to enhance clinical observations with predictive capabilities and support physicians in diagnosing and treating patients. This paper focuses on modelling glaucoma evolution because it requires early diagnosis, individualized treatment, and lifelong monitoring. Glaucoma is a chronic, progressive, irreversible, multifactorial optic neuropathy that primarily affects elderly individuals.

Background: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people are at higher risk of mental health problems due to widespread hetero- and cisnormativity, including negative public attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community. In addition to combating social exclusion at the societal level, strengthening the coping abilities of young LGBTQ+ people is an important goal.

Objective: In this transdiagnostic feasibility study, we tested a 6-week internet intervention program designed to increase the ability of nonclinical LGBTQ+ participants to cope with adverse events in their daily lives.

Article Synopsis
  • The rise of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in children has prompted research into the role of neutrophils in its development, highlighting their contribution to liver inflammation and fibrosis.
  • Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) may serve as a potential non-invasive biomarker for diagnosing and monitoring NAFLD in pediatric populations, although existing data is limited and inconsistent.
  • Further studies are needed to clarify the relationship between NLR, obesity, and NAFLD progression in children, with an emphasis on its reversibility through weight loss.

Prebiotics, Probiotics, and Synbiotics-A Research Hotspot for Pediatric Obesity.

Microorganisms

October 2023

Department of Pediatrics I, "George Emil Palade" University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technology, Gheorghe Marinescu Street, No. 38, 540136 Târgu Mureș, Romania.

Childhood obesity is a major public health problem worldwide with an increasing prevalence, associated not only with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but also with psychosocial problems. Gut microbiota is a new factor in childhood obesity, which can modulate the blood lipopolysaccharide levels, the satiety, and fat distribution, and can ensure additional calories to the host. The aim of this review was to assess the differences and the impact of the gut microbial composition on several obesity-related complications such as metabolic syndrome, NAFLD, or insulin resistance.

Taking into account previous data that sustain a relationship between vitamin D deficiency and higher infection positivity rates, this review aims to assess the influence of vitamin D deficiency and/or insufficiency upon the prevalence of infection and its eradication success. Three major databases were searched for articles that analyzed a relationship between vitamin D status and infection. The literature search retrieved a total of 37 reports, after the article selection process.

Little research has been done on professionals' perceptions of institutions and governments during epidemics. We aim to create a profile of physicians who feel they can raise public health issues with relevant institutions during a pandemic. A total of 1285 Romanian physicians completed an online survey as part of a larger study.

The use of resorbable magnesium alloys in the design of implants represents a new direction in the healthcare domain. Two main research avenues are currently explored for developing or improving metallic biomaterials: (i) increase of their corrosion resistance by designed compositional and structural modifications, and (ii) functionalization of their surfaces by coating with ceramic or polymeric layers. The main objective of this work was to comparatively assess bio-functional coatings (i.

The failure of hip prostheses is a problem that requires further investigation and analysis. Although total hip replacement is an extremely successful operation, the number of revision surgeries needed after this procedure is expected to continue to increase due to issues with both bone cement types and cementation techniques (depending on the producer). To conduct a comparative analysis, as a surgeon prepared the bone cement and introduced it in the body, this study's team of researchers prepared three types of commercial bone cements with the samples mixed and placed them in specimens, following the timeline of the surgery.

United European Gastroenterology (UEG) and European Society for Neurogastroenterology and Motility (ESNM) consensus on functional dyspepsia.

Neurogastroenterol Motil

September 2021

CHU de Bordeaux, Centre Medico-chirurgical Magellan, Hôpital Haut-Lévêque and Gastroenterology Department, Université de Bordeaux, INSERM CIC, Bordeaux, France.

Background: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is one of the most common conditions in clinical practice. In spite of its prevalence, FD is associated with major uncertainties in terms of its definition, underlying pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Methods: A Delphi consensus was initiated with 41 experts from 22 European countries who conducted a literature summary and voting process on 87 statements.

Article Synopsis
  • Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), including microRNAs (miRNAs) and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), play crucial roles in regulating gene expression and various biological processes relevant to cancer progression.
  • Research on ncRNAs has typically focused on their individual functions; however, interactions between these molecules, especially concerning tumor growth and metastasis in cancers like triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), are not well understood.
  • The study highlights emerging evidence on the dysregulation of ncRNAs in TNBC and aims to uncover their roles and regulatory networks to potentially lead to improved diagnostic and therapeutic options for this aggressive form of breast cancer.

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients' use of the Internet for health information interacts with the way they trust their gastroenterologist. No standardized measure has targeted IBS patients and gastroenterologists specifically, nor their use of the Internet. The aims of this paper were as follows: the development of a scale that measures an IBS patient's trust in their gastroenterologist, the development of a scale measuring an IBS patient's reliance on Internet health information, and testing the hypothesis that IBS patients, who use the Internet for IBS-related information, trust their gastroenterologist less than those who do not.

Dynamics of digital ulcers in systemic sclerosis.

Exp Ther Med

July 2020

Department of Clinical Dermato-Venereology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy 'Gr. T. Popa', Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, 700115 Iaşi, Romania.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a collagenosis with insufficiently known etiopathogenesis, characterized by microvasculopathy and excessive fibrosis in the context of an autoimmune disorder. The incompletely elucidated pathogenesis and limited therapeutic options, disabling aspects, skin lesions and pain determine important functional and psychological deficiencies which affect the quality of life. It is imperative to observe and correlate individual clinical and paraclinical data to optimize disease management.

The aim of this study was to compare the antimicrobial effects of hydroxyl radical generation by photoactivation of hydrogen peroxide (HO) with diode laser (λ = 940 nm) in combination with conventional nonsurgical periodontal therapy. Thirty-eight patients and 114 teeth were included in this study. The test teeth were randomly assigned to one of the three treatment groups: Group 1 (control group): scaling and root planning (SRP); and the following experimental groups: Group 2: SRP +940 nm diode laser; Group 3: SRP+photoactivation of HO with 940 nm diode laser.
