Health science communications professionals span a broad range of disciplines, each bringing a distinctly different focus and set of cognitive skills to bear upon information technologies. Nowhere is this more apparent than in biocommunications service units and academic programs. We have investigated effects of alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), both as a single agent and in combination with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) against a human colon tumor xenograft (T6) grown as primary tissue culture in serum-free medium and in combination with doxorubicin (DX) against a human lung adenocarcinoma cell line (A549). DFMO showed a dose-dependent growth-inhibitory effect against human colon tumor xenograft and lung adenocarcinoma cells. Growth-inhibitory activity of DFMO against T6 cells was reversed completely when the cells were treated simultaneously with putrescine (PU) (10(-6) M) and DFMO (10(-3) M).

Follicular development and oocyte maturation were compared in 22 patients stimulated with human menopausal gonadotropins/human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG, group I) and in 52 women also treated with the gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH-a) leuprolide acetate (LA, group II). Suppression of endogenous leutinizing hormone (LH) surges by LA allowed delayed hCG administration, resulting in higher peripheral estradiol levels, more retrieved oocyte cumulus corona complexes, and greater numbers of cryopreserved embryos. Reduction in spontaneous LH surges in the GnRH-a cycles may have allowed time for larger follicular fluid (FF) volume accumulation during all phases of oocyte cumulus corona complex maturation, restoring synchrony between FF volume and oocyte cumulus corona complex maturity.

The demographic characteristics of 242 clinic outpatients evaluated for dementia were examined. Each individual received a comprehensive assessment of medical status, psychological functioning, and social abilities. Diagnoses were arrived at by consensus, and appropriate treatment plans and follow-up recommendations were generated, with comprehensive feedback provided to family members and other caregivers.
