Enterococcus faecium has become a globally disseminated nosocomial pathogen mainly because of acquisition and diffusion of virulence factors and multidrug resistance determinants, including glycopeptides, which are some of the last resort antimicrobials used to treat more serious infections common in high-risk patients. In this study we investigated and characterized hospital-associated (HA) E. faecium isolates collected at Hue Central Hospital, Vietnam.

Aim: Cisplatin resistance in ovarian cancer remains a complex problem as tumors frequently develop resistance against drugs, a mechanism sometimes mediated by ATP-Binding Cassette transporters. Our goal was to find compounds restricting their inhibition capacity to the cisplatin efflux mediated by ABCC2 pump, among previously identified inhibitors, derived from the 2- indolylmethylenebenzofuranones. Methodology & results: An original method setup allows direct quantitation of platinum by employing cyTOF mass cytometry.

The novel genome-wide assays of epigenetic marks have resulted in a greater understanding of how genetics and the environment interact in the development and inheritance of diabetes. Chronic hyperglycemia induces epigenetic changes in multiple organs, contributing to diabetic complications. Specific epigenetic-modifying compounds have been developed to erase these modifications, possibly slowing down the onset of diabetes-related complications.

Aim: Ability to deliver drugs into the cell nuclei can significantly increase the efficacy of cancer therapies, in particular in the case of multidrug-resistant cancer Results: Polymer nanocarriers based on amphiphilic thiooctadecyl-terminated poly-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone were produced and loaded with a model hydrophobic drug, curcumin. Two commonly used loading approaches - emulsification and ultrasonic dispersion - were found to lead to two different size distributions with distinctively different biological effect. While nanocarriers produced via the emulsion method penetrated cells by dynamin-dependent endocytic mechanisms, sub-100 nm dispersion-produced nanocarriers were capable of crossing the membranes via biologically independent mechanisms.

The IMIA History Working Group has as its first goal the editing of a volume of contributions from pioneers and leaders in the field of biomedical and health informatics (BMHI) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of IMIA's predecessor IFIP-TC4. This paper describes how the IMIA History WG evolved from an earlier Taskforce, and has focused on producing the edited book of original contributions. We describe its proposed outline of objectives for the personal stories, and national and regional society narratives, together with some comments on the evolution of Medinfo meeting contributions over the years, to provide a reference source for the early motivations of the scientific, clinical, educational, and professional changes that have influenced the historical course of our field.

Nanoscience provides us with new opportunities to develop nanotechnologies for treating, in particular, central nervous system disorders such as Alzheimer disease and multiple sclerosis. From a methodological point of view, it is challenging to deliver drugs effectively across the blood-brain barrier and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier. Our 10-year data and reports from both in vivo and in vitro studies, however, have consistently proved that therapeutic drugs of different types can be generally loaded in/on the nanocarriers for targeted and programmable deliveries to the central nervous system with a high degree of efficacy.

Purpose: To quantify light energy transmission through two bulk-fill resin-based composites and to measure the top to bottom surface Vickers hardness ratio (VHratio) of samples of various incremental thicknesses, using either a single-wave or dual-wave light curing unit (LCU).
Methods: Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill (TECBF) and SonicFill (SF) were studied. Using MARC-RC, the irradiance delivered to the top surface of the samples 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm thick (n= 5 for each thickness) was adjusted to 800 mW/cm2 for 20 seconds (16 J/cm2) using either a single-wave, Bluephase or a dual-wave, Bluephase G2 LCUs.

Previous studies from our laboratory show that intraperitoneal injections of 1-metyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridin (MPTP, 20 mg/kg) daily within 2-h intervals for 5 days in mice induce Parkinson's disease (PD)-like symptoms on the 8th day. A significant decrease in dopamine (DA) and its metabolites 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA) along with a marked decrease in the number of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive cells in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and striatum (STr) confirms the validity of this model for studying PD. Since cerebrolysin (CBL) is a well-balanced composition of several neurotrophic factors and active peptide fragments, in the present investigation we examined the timed release of CBL using titanate nanospheres (TiNS) in treating PD in our mouse model.

Background & Objectives: One of the multiple factors contributing to virological response in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is interferon-gamma-inducible protein-10 (IP-10). Its level reflects the status of interferon-stimulated genes, which in turn is associated with virological response to antiviral therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of serum IP-10 levels on sustained virological response (SVR) and the association of this parameter with insulin resistance (IR) and liver histology.

Neprilysin (NPL), the rate-limiting enzyme for amyloid beta peptide (AβP), appears to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Since mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and/or cerebrolysin (CBL, a combination of neurotrophic factors and active peptide fragments) have neuroprotective effects in various CNS disorders, we examined nanowired delivery of MSCs and CBL on NPL content and brain pathology in AD using a rat model. AD-like symptoms were produced by intraventricular (i.

Palliative care began in Vietnam in 2001, but steady growth in palliative care services and education commenced several years later when partnerships for ongoing training and technical assistance by committed experts were created with the Ministry of Health, major public hospitals, and medical universities. An empirical analysis of palliative care need by the Ministry of Health in 2006 was followed by national palliative care clinical guidelines, initiation of clinical training for physicians and nurses, and revision of opioid prescribing regulations. As advanced and specialist training programs in palliative care became available, graduates of these programs began helping to establish palliative care services in their hospitals.
