The effects of silver nanoparticles on behavior, apoptosis and nitro-oxidative stress in offspring Wistar rats.

Aim: To investigate the comparative effects of prenatal exposure to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) functionalized with citrate and polyphenols on spatial cognition and also on nitro-oxidative stress and apoptosis in the hippocampus and cerebellum of offsprings.

Materials & Methods: Pregnant Wistar rats were orally administered substances from day 10 of gestation until day 21. Six weeks postpartum, six male offsprings from each group were used for behavioral evaluation and determination of oxidative stress and apoptosis.

The Effect of Irradiation Distance on Light Transmittance and Vickers Hardness Ratio of Two Bulk-fill Resin-based Composites.

The aims of this study were to assess the light energy transmission and Vickers hardness (VH) ratio of two bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs) (Tetric EvoCeram and Filtek) cured at different distances between the light curing unit's (LCU) tip and the surface of the restoration (T-S) using either a Bluephase G2, Bluephase® 'turbo tip' or Bluephase Style LCU. Samples were cured from the top at T-S distances of 2mm, 6mm and 10mm for 20 seconds. A MARC-Resin-Calibrator™ recorded the transmitted irradiance reaching the bottom of the sample, in real time.

Functional disability and its predictors in systemic sclerosis: a study from the DeSScipher project within the EUSTAR group.

Objectives: The multisystem manifestations of SSc can greatly impact patients' quality of life. The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with disability in SSc.

Methods: SSc patients from the prospective DeSScipher cohort who had completed the scleroderma health assessment questionnaire (SHAQ), a disability score that combines the health assessment questionnaire and five visual analogue scales, were included in this analysis.

Can Apparent Diffusion Coefficient Predict the Clinical Outcome in Drowned Children?

Introduction: Pediatric cerebral hypoxic-ischemic injury frequently results in severe neurological outcome. Imaging with diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWi) demonstrates that the acute cerebral injury and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) allow the assessment of the severity of brain damage. The main objective was to examine if spatial distribution of reductions in ADC values is associated with clinical outcome in drowned children.

Hemadsorption with Adult CytoSorb® in a Low Weight Pediatric Case.

Cytokine adsorber (CytoSorb) has been used successfully as adjunctive treatment for adult patients with elevated cytokine levels in the setting with severe sepsis and septic shock and to reduce blood myoglobin, unconjugated bilirubin, and conjugated bilirubin. In this article we present the case of a nine-month-old male infant who was admitted to the NICU due to sepsis after cardiac surgery, Fallot tetralogy, and multisystem organ failure (MSOF) including liver failure and renal failure which was successfully treated by a combination of continuous hemodiafiltration (HDF) and hemadsorption with CytoSorb. HDF was safe and effective from the first day for urea removal, but the patient's bilirubin levels kept increasing gradually, culminating on the 9th day with a maximum value of 54 mg/dL of total bilirubin and 31.

Efficacy and safety of APT198K for the treatment of infantile colic: a pilot study.

Aim: Comparing efficacy and safety of APT198K (xyloglucan plus heat-killed Lactobacillus reuteri SGL01 and Bifidobacterium brevis SGB01) versus a lactase dietary supplement as first-line treatment of infantile colic.

Methods: Randomized, multicenter, open-label, parallel group, active-controlled study, in 46 infants aged 3-16 weeks with infantile colic, receiving APT198K or a lactase dietary supplement for 10 days.

Results: Number and duration of crying episodes decreased significantly versus baseline in both groups.

Occurrence and diversity of both bacterial and fungal communities in dental unit waterlines subjected to disinfectants.

Chemical disinfectants are widely advocated to reduce the microbial contamination in dental unit waterlines (DUWL). However, until now their efficacy has been poorly examined after long-term application. In this study, through quantitative PCR and high-throughput sequencing, both bacterial and fungal communities were profiled from 8- to 12-year-old DUWL treated with disinfectants commonly used by European dentists.

Simultaneous analysis of neutral monosaccharides, fatty acids and cholesterol as biomarkers from a drop of blood.

Aim: We have developed a method for simultaneous monitoring of more biomarkers from three different classes of compounds by simultaneous analysis of neutral monosaccharides, fatty acids (FAs) and cholesterol as their per-O-methylated derivatives from a drop of blood by GC-MS. This work is a development of our previous results about analysis of neutral monosaccharides from a drop of blood.

Methods & Results: The simultaneous per-O-methylation was obtained by methylation in one step with methyl iodide and NaOH in DMSO.

Background. Xyloglucan, a film-forming agent, improves intestinal mucosa resistance to pathologic damage. The efficacy, safety, and time of onset of the antidiarrheal effect of xyloglucan were assessed in children with acute gastroenteritis receiving oral rehydration solution (ORS).

Anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies in chronic lymphocytic leukemia: from uncertainties to promises.

Over the last two decades, anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy has improved patient outcome in B-cell malignancies, and confirmed CD20 as an important target in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Until recently, the gold standard was based on the utilization of rituximab combined with chemotherapy (fludarabine and cyclophosphamide), but patients often relapse. Next, with our better understanding of mAb engineering, anti-CD20 mAb therapy has evolved with the development of new mAb permitting significant clinical responses by improving pharmacokinetics, safety, activity and immunogenicity.

Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae: a 2-year surveillance in a hospital in Iaşi, Romania.

Aim: Limited information is currently available about the prevalence of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) in Romania.

Materials & Methods: Routine tests of 1,993 clinical isolates at a hospital in Iaşi yielded 46 isolates that were resistant to carbapenems. All 46 isolates were phenotypically and genotypically analyzed using VITEK-2 and DNA microarray-based assays.

Biomarkers in localized prostate cancer.

Biomarkers can improve prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Accuracy of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) for early diagnosis of prostate cancer is not satisfactory, as it is an organ- but not cancer-specific biomarker, and it can be improved by using models that incorporate PSA along with other test results, such as prostate cancer antigen 3, the molecular forms of PSA (proPSA, benign PSA and intact PSA), as well as kallikreins. Recent reports suggest that new tools may be provided by metabolomic studies as shown by preliminary data on sarcosine.

Xyloglucan for the treatment of acute diarrhea: results of a randomized, controlled, open-label, parallel group, multicentre, national clinical trial.

Human ABCC2 is an ATP-binding cassette transporter involved in the export of endobiotics and xenobiotics. It is involved in cisplatin resistance in cancer cells, particularly in ovarian cancer. The few known ABCC2 modulators are poorly efficient, so it is necessary to explore new ways to select and optimize efficient compounds ABCC2.

Urotensin II receptor on preoperative biopsy is associated with upstaging and upgrading in prostate cancer.

Aim: A higher Gleason score was associated with a lower tumor urotensin II receptor (UTII-R) expression in prostate cancer patients.

Methods: A retrospective review of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor tissue derived from those who had prostatectomy and matching biopsy specimens was conducted at six Institutions. UTII-R expression was evaluated on biopsy by immunohistochemistry.

Personalized epigenetic management of diabetes.

Epigenetic regulation of gene expression allows the organism to respond/adapt to environmental conditions without changing the gene coding sequence. Epigenetic modifications have also been found to control gene expression in various diseases, including diabetes. Epigenetic changes induced by hyperglycemia in multiple target organs contribute to metabolic memory of diabetic complications.

Recombinant replacement therapy for hereditary angioedema due to C1 inhibitor deficiency.

Hereditary angioedema is a rare genetic condition transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait and characterized most commonly by the production of either inadequate or nonfunctioning C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH), a blood protein that regulates proteases in the complement, fibrinolytic and contact systems. Patients with hereditary angioedema suffer from episodic, unpredictable manifestations of edema affecting multiple anatomical locations, including the GI tract, facial tissue, the upper airway, oropharynx, urogenital region and/or the arms and legs. A rational approach to treatment is replacement of C1-INH protein, to normalize the levels of C1-INH activity and halt the progression of the biochemical activation processes underlying the edema formation.

DNMT3A moderates cognitive decline in subjects with mild cognitive impairment: replicated evidence from two mild cognitive impairment cohorts.

Epigenetic dysregulation has been associated with cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. The present study investigated associations between common SNPs in genes regulating DNA methylation and age-related changes in cognitive decline in two independent prospective cohorts of patients suffering from mild cognitive impairment. An association between the rs1187120 SNP in DNMT3A and annual decline in cognitive functioning was discovered and replicated, suggesting that DNMT3A moderates cognitive decline in subjects with mild cognitive impairment.

A role for hepatic surgery in patients with liver metastatic breast cancer: review of literature.

Traditionally, patients with metastatic breast cancer were seen as carrying a grim prognosis and therapy was based mainly on palliative chemotherapy and hormonal therapy, with surgery being considered as ineffective. However, in the last 20 years different centers worldwide published series of metastatic breast cancer patients who underwent resection for different metastatic sites (liver, brain, lung), reporting favorable results. Most of these papers addressed to the role of liver surgery in patients with breast cancer liver metastases, mainly due to the favorable results achieved by liver resection in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.
