The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) polymorphism is associated with preeclampsia since its abnormal expression plays an important role in vasculogenesis in placenta formation. Thus, this study is aimed at analyzing the association between VEGF +936C/T polymorphism and the risk of preeclampsia. To assess the causal relationship, a hospital-based cross-sectional analytical study was carried out among 204 Myanmar pregnant women during the period of January 2018-September 2020.

The identification of mitotic figures is essential for the diagnosis, grading, and classification of various different tumors. Despite its importance, there is a paucity of literature reporting the consistency in interpreting mitotic figures among pathologists. This study leverages publicly accessible datasets and social media to recruit an international group of pathologists to score an image database of more than 1000 mitotic figures collectively.

Exposure to environmental heavy metals is associated with telomere length (TL) alteration. Available information regarding the effect of prenatal exposure to environmental pollutants on newborn TL is controversial. The aim of this study is to systematically review and conduct a meta-analysis of the existing epidemiological studies on the associations between prenatal metal exposure and newborn TL.

The transcription factor Nuclear factor e2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is pivotal in orchestrating cellular antioxidant defense mechanisms, particularly in skin cells exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and electrophilic phytochemicals. To comprehensively investigate Nrf2's role in maintaining cellular redox equilibrium following UV-induced stress, we engineered a novel Nrf2 fusion-based reporter system for real-time, live-cell quantification of Nrf2 activity in human melanoma cells. Utilizing live quantitative imaging, we dissected the kinetic profiles of Nrf2 activation in response to an array of stimuli, including UVA and UVB radiation, as well as a broad spectrum of phytochemicals including ferulic acid, gallic acid, hispidulin, p-coumaric acid, quercetin, resveratrol, tannic acid, and vanillic acid as well as well-known Nrf2 inducers, tert-butylhydroquinone (tBHQ) and sulforaphane (SFN).

Objective: Physical exercise can provide many health benefits in humans. Exercise-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and its downstream signaling cascades are reported to induce mitochondrial biogenesis in exercising tissues. Selenoprotein P (SELENOP) is the antioxidant hepatokine whose hypersecretion is associated with various metabolic diseases.

  • The study aimed to explore the link between the SNP rs7903146 in the TCF7L2 gene and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the Myanmar population.
  • By comparing 100 individuals with T2DM to 113 healthy controls, researchers found that carrier genotypes (CT and TT) had a significantly higher incidence in those with diabetes.
  • Results indicated that the T allele increases diabetes risk more than the C allele and is associated with lower pancreatic beta-cell function, highlighting its potential impact on T2DM management.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of urine-based lipoarabinomannan tests for diagnosing active tuberculosis compared to traditional sputum-based tests, especially considering that many HIV patients cannot produce sputum.* -
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using data from several sources, focusing on cases where tuberculosis was microbiologically confirmed across various studies and participant backgrounds.* -

Background: Anemia and stunting in children are detrimental to the prospects of a normal, healthy upbringing. Having similar risk factors and serious consequences, the syndemic aspect of these two ailments is mostly underrated, and positive deviant (PD) factors that ensure non-anemic status in stunted children have not been studied to date.

Methods: This study aimed to identify PD factors that have potential to prevent syndemic anemia among stunted children aged 6-59 months in Myanmar.

Feasibility and readiness to implement Robson classification to monitor caesarean sections in public hospitals in Myanmar: Formative research.

PLOS Glob Public Health

January 2023

Gender and Women's Health Unit, Centre for Health Equity, School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Recent years have demonstrated an increase in caesarean section (CS) in most countries worldwide with considerable concern for the potential consequences. In 2015, WHO proposed the use of Robson classification as a global standard for assessing, monitoring and comparing CS rates. Currently, there is no standardized method to assess CS in Myanmar.

To evaluate a decentralised testing model and simplified treatment protocol of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection to facilitate treatment scale-up in Myanmar, this prospective, observational study recruited HIV-HCV co-infected outpatients receiving sofosbuvir/daclatasvir in Yangon, Myanmar. The study examined the outcomes and factors associated with a sustained virological response (SVR). A decentralised "hub-and-spoke" testing model was evaluated where fingerstick capillary specimens were transported by taxi and processed centrally.

Background: Although Remdesivir has been evaluated for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), few study has yet shown effective mortality reduction. It might be because, in almost all those studies, remdesivir therapy was started beyond 7 days from the onset of symptoms when the active viral replications have already gone.

Methods: This study reviewed the effectiveness of early remdesivir therapy during viral phase of COVID-19 and safety of its administration at home or community care during the outbreak of COVID-19 from July to September 2021 in Myanmar.
