Article Synopsis
  • Mollusks, the second most diverse animal phylum, have unclear responses to endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), which can cause reproductive issues and population declines.
  • In the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, exposure to EDCs like 17α-ethinylestradiol and ketoconazole was shown to change sex and disrupt gonadal development.
  • A newly developed non-destructive qPCR assay allows researchers to identify the sex of mussels before experiments, aiding in monitoring and understanding the effects of EDCs on mollusk endocrinology.

Analysis and Evaluation of Situation-Specific Theories: Proposed Modifications in Existing Criteria for Analysis and Evaluation of Theories.

Nurs Sci Q

October 2024

Professor, Department of Nursing, Donna M. and Robert J. Manning College of Nursing and Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts Boston, MA, USA.

Although many situation-specific theories have been developed during the past several years, few of them have been analyzed and evaluated using criteria that are relevant for this type of theory. The purpose of this paper is to propose modifications in Fawcett's analysis and evaluation criteria of theories for application to situation-specific theories. The position taken is that important but minor adjustments are required to make these criteria suitable for the analysis and evaluation of situation-specific theories, taking the similarities and differences between middle-range theories and situation-specific theories into account.

Towards Sustainable Antibiotic Use in Aquaculture and Antimicrobial Resistance: Participatory Experts' Overview and Recommendations.

Antibiotics (Basel)

September 2024

Monterey Bay Aquarium Global Oceans Conservation Program, 886 Cannery Row, Monterey, CA 93940, USA.

Notably, 56 worldwide experts gathered for the Antimicrobial Assessment on Global Aquaculture Production (AGAP) series of workshops to (1) evaluate the current state of knowledge on antimicrobial use and identify existing gaps; (2) formulate strategies to identify ecologically relevant impact indicators and establish thresholds for assessment; (3) identify pivotal socioeconomic factors and effective governance mechanisms essential for implementing monitoring practices in aquaculture and extending them across sectors and countries for aquaculture sustainability; (4) develop pathways to enhance our comprehension between antibiotic use in aquaculture and antimicrobial resistance; and (5) explore potential antibiotic monitoring tools that can be universally adapted and implemented across region and sectors. The main outcomes were a roadmap for establishing investigation priorities on the relevant topics regarding antibiotic use in aquaculture, socioeconomic drivers for using antibiotics and behaviors that need more robust and transparent regulatory frameworks to guide farmers, training on antimicrobial use, and access to veterinarians and extension services agents for education. Overall, the workshop evidenced the power of collaboration in addressing complex global challenges to achieve sustainable aquaculture.

Strong expectations exist for the selectivity of migration along key demographic characteristics, such as age, sex, and education, which are often linked to social and economic drivers. Scholars acknowledge, however, that migratory behavior is also likely to be selective on characteristics that are less readily observable. This research note expands the list by examining "grit"-in other words, a measure of perseverance in the face of adversity.

How stress influences e-cigarette health message perceptions and intentions to abstain from vaping among young adults who vape.

Addict Behav

January 2025

Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences, Division of Preventive and Behavioral Medicine, UMass Chan Medical School, Worcester, MA, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • * In a study with 346 participants, those with higher stress levels tended to rate health messages about vaping negatively and showed lower intentions to stop vaping.
  • * Results indicate that stress not only affects how these messages are perceived, but also decreases the likelihood of young adults intending to abstain from vaping, suggesting public health strategies should consider stress factors in their messaging.

Collective behaviour, social interactions and leadership in animal groups are often driven by individual differences. However, most studies focus on same-species groups, in which individual variation is relatively low. Multispecies groups, however, entail interactions among highly divergent phenotypes, ranging from simple exploitative actions to complex coordinated networks.

Dementia-focused programs in older adult centers and health care use among individuals with dementia.

Health Aff Sch

September 2024

Hub for Aging Collaboration, School of Social Work, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ 08901, United States.

There is growing attention to community-based services for preventing adverse health care outcomes among people aging with dementia. We explored whether the availability of dementia-centered programming within older adult centers (ie, senior centers)-specifically, adult day services (ADS), social adult day centers (SADCs), memory cafes, and caregiver support-is associated with reduced hospitalization, emergency room use, and total Medicare costs for community-dwelling individuals ages 75 and older with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), and whether associations differ by the relative size of the local jurisdiction. We used a novel dataset that links Medicare claims data with data from an organizational census of municipally based Massachusetts older adult centers.
