Dispersal can affect individual-level fitness and population-level ecological and evolutionary processes. Factors that affect dispersal could therefore have important eco-evolutionary implications. Here, we investigated the extent to which an inflammation and tissue repair response-peritoneal fibrosis-which is known to restrict movement, could influence dispersal by conducting a mark-recapture experiment in a lake in Alaska with threespine stickleback (.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study shows that increasing the surface roughness of organic thin-film thermoelectrics can significantly enhance their performance, specifically the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT).
  • * A new method was developed to create nanorough PEDOT:Tos films, achieving a ZT of 0.99, which is 83% higher than smooth versions, and a prototype thermoelectric device using these films generated 118.7 nW at a 50 K temperature difference.

Article Synopsis
  • Young adults in Puerto Rico have below ideal cardiovascular health (CVH), with 72.6% scoring less than 80 on the CVH scale, indicating significant health risks.
  • Men exhibit worse overall CVH scores and specific health metrics (like nicotine exposure and blood pressure) compared to women, but women show lower physical activity levels.
  • The findings highlight the urgent need for further research and targeted interventions to improve CVH in this demographic, especially considering the identified sex differences.

Duplicated genes provide the opportunity for evolutionary novelty and adaptive divergence. In many cases, having more gene copies increases gene expression, which might facilitate adaptation to stressful or novel environments. Conversely, overexpression or misexpression of duplicated genes can be detrimental and subject to negative selection.

Eco-evolutionary experiments are typically conducted in semi-unnatural controlled settings, such as mesocosms; yet inferences about how evolution and ecology interact in the real world would surely benefit from experiments in natural uncontrolled settings. Opportunities for such experiments are rare but do arise in the context of restoration ecology-where different "types" of a given species can be introduced into different "replicate" locations. Designing such experiments requires wrestling with consequential questions.

Interfacial adhesion dictates properties and performance of both composites and adhesively bonded structures. Weak adhesion at the interfaces of polymer composites leads to void formation and debonding, which adversely affect composite structural integrity and mechanical performance. This work investigated the relationship between surface wettability and interfacial fracture energy with the goal of tailoring interfacial adhesion within polymer composites.

Recent advances in clean, sustainable energy sources such as wind and solar have enabled significant cost improvements, yet their inherent intermittency remains a considerable challenge for year-round reliability demanding the need for grid-scale energy storage. Nonaqueous redox flow batteries (NRFBs) have the potential to address this need, with attractive attributes such as flexibility to accommodate long- and short-duration storage, separately scalable energy and power ratings, and improved safety profile over integrated systems such as lithium-ion batteries. Currently, the low-solubility of NRFB electrolytes fundamentally limits their energy density.

The cost of electricity generated by wind and solar installations has become competitive with that generated by burning fossil fuels. While this paves the way for a carbon-neutral electrical grid, short- and long-term intermittency necessitates energy storage. Flow batteries are a promising technology to accommodate this need, with numerous advantages, including decoupled power and energy ratings, which imparts flexibility, thermal stability, and safety.

Polyaniline (PANI) is one of the most studied conducting polymers owing to its high electrical conductivity, straightforward synthesis and stability. Graphene-supported PANI nanocomposite materials combine the superior physical properties of graphene, synergistically enhancing the performance of PANI as well as giving rise to new properties. Covalent nanocomposites have shown to give higher stability and better performance than their non-covalent counterparts, however, the covalent graphene-PANI nanocomposite are primarily prepared from graphene oxide.

Nanoparticle-based radiosensitization of cancerous cells is evolving as a favorable modality for enhancing radiotherapeutic ratio, and as an effective tool for increasing the outcome of concomitant chemoradiotherapy. Nevertheless, delivery of sufficient concentrations of nanoparticles (NPs) or nanoparticle-based radiosensitizers (NBRs) to the targeted tumor without or with limited systemic side effects on healthy tissues/organs remains a challenge that many investigators continue to explore. With current systemic intravenous delivery of a drug, even targeted nanoparticles with great prospect of reaching targeted distant tumor sites, only a portion of the administered NPs/drug dosage can reach the tumor, despite the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect.

The non-conventional oleaginous yeast is able to utilize both hydrophilic and hydrophobic carbon sources as substrates and convert them into value-added bioproducts such as organic acids, extracellular proteins, wax esters, long-chain diacids, fatty acid ethyl esters, carotenoids and omega-3 fatty acids. Metabolic pathway analysis and previous research results show that hydrophobic substrates are potentially more preferred by than hydrophilic substrates to make high-value products at higher productivity, titer, rate, and yield. Hence, is becoming an efficient and promising biomanufacturing platform due to its capabilities in biosynthesis of extracellular lipases and directly converting the extracellular triacylglycerol oils and fats into high-value products.
