IgM-bearing B cell affinity subpopulations possess differential antigen sensitivity in rainbow trout.

Fish Shellfish Immunol

November 2021

Department of Aquatic Health Sciences, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary, Gloucester Point, VA, 23062, USA.

The need for accurate assessments of in vitro generated antibody prompted examination of the effect of antigen on secreted antibody concentrations and affinities. It was found that the antigen concentrations commonly employed for in vitro stimulation were able to significantly compromise IgM titer and affinity estimates in rainbow trout. Specifically, IgM titers were underestimated with the high affinity antibodies being specifically blocked.

Much can be learned by investigating the click trains of odontocetes, including estimating the number of vocalizing animals and comparing the acoustic behavior of different individuals. Analyzing such information gathered from groups of echolocating animals in a natural environment is complicated by two main factors: overlapping echolocation produced by multiple animals at the same time, and varying levels of background noise. Starkhammar et al.

Dioecious species are a hallmark of the animal kingdom, with opposing sexes responding differently to identical sensory cues. Here, we study the response of C. elegans to the small-molecule pheromone, ascr#8, which elicits opposing behavioral valences in each sex.

Introduction: There is a lack of lesbian, bisexual and gay (LGB)-focused nursing research, in part, because the population is traditionally difficult to access. This article explores the effectiveness, benefits, and limitations of online recruitment of a distinct population of LGB-identified nurses in a study of substance use and minority stress.

Methodology: A sample of nurses who self-identified as LGB were recruited for an online survey using organic Facebook outreach.

A theory-guided non-experimental, descriptive, correlational design was used to evaluate how entry and passage variables were related to nursing home adjustment for individuals with dementia. Older adults with dementia may be unable to speak for themselves, therefore proxy responses of Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) provided the data for completion of the Nursing Home Adjustment Scale. Guided by the Meleis' Theory of Transitions, entry level factors (i.

Division of Engineering in Medicine, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, MA 02139, USA.

Artificial intelligence algorithms that aid mini-microscope imaging are attractive for numerous applications. In this paper, we optimize artificial intelligence techniques to provide clear, and natural biomedical imaging. We demonstrate that a deep learning-enabled super-resolution method can significantly enhance the spatial resolution of mini-microscopy and regular-microscopy.

Montmorillonite promoted photodegradation of amlodipine in natural water via formation of surface complexes.

Chemosphere

January 2022

State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, School of the Environment, Nanjing University, Nanjing, 210023, China. Electronic address:

The photolysis of amlodipine (AML) as a ubiquitous pollutant in natural water has been extensively studied. Montmorillonite (MMT), a major component of suspended particles in surface aquifers, plays key roles in the natural transportation and transformation of organic contaminants in the environment. However, literature has scarcely focused on whether and how suspended particles affect the phototransformation of AML.

Age and gender differences in physical heart failure symptom clusters.

Heart Lung

December 2021

Department of Adult Nursing, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 285 Old Westport Rd. North Dartmouth 02747, MA, United States.

Background: Gender differences exist in structure and function of the heart resulting in HF symptom variation. Previous HF symptom cluster research described symptom clusters that were linked to functional status, mortality, quality of life and rehospitalization. Age and gender differences between cluster groups were described in one study.

Successful transition to an academic nurse educator role is challenging; it is necessary to identify facilitators and barriers that aide or hinder this process. This study used an autoethnographic qualitative design to explore the lived experiences of a cohort of faculty during their transition into a tenure-track role. Three facilitators (noncompetitive environment, resource sharing, and cohort approach) and two barriers (work-life balance and intrusion of old habits) emerged as themes.

Introduction: Little research documents the experience of nurses caring for patients with COVID-19 in the United States. This article explores the experience of nurses providing direct care to COVID-19 patients to understand the working conditions and emotional impact of working in this pandemic on nurses.

Methods: Data were gathered through an online survey distributed via snowball sampling in July 2020.

Current treatment of chronic wounds has been critically limited by various factors, including bacterial infection, biofilm formation, impaired angiogenesis, and prolonged inflammation. Addressing these challenges, we developed a multifunctional wound dressing-based three-pronged approach for accelerating wound healing. The multifunctional wound dressing, composed of nanofibers, functional nanoparticles, natural biopolymers, and selected protein and peptide, can target multiple endogenous repair mechanisms and represents a promising alternative to current wound healing products.

Coastal communities rely on levees and seawalls as critical protection against sea-level rise; in the United States alone, $300 billion in shoreline armoring costs are forecast by 2100. However, despite the local flood risk reduction benefits, these structures can exacerbate flooding and associated damages along other parts of the shoreline-particularly in coastal bays and estuaries, where nearly 500 million people globally are at risk from sea-level rise. The magnitude and spatial distribution of the economic impact of this dynamic, however, are poorly understood.

The focus on quantifiable data in sport performance has led to incremental advantages in baseball and has played an important role in the development of new hitting, pitching, fielding, and coaching strategies. Recently, researchers and team representatives have considered the impact of additional factors in baseball, including cognitive functioning. In this study, predictive validity for the Athletic Intelligence Quotient (AIQ) was examined vis-à-vis performance outcomes in professional baseball.

Uncertainty levels differ by physical heart failure symptom cluster.

Appl Nurs Res

August 2021

Department of Psychology, College of Arts and Sciences, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 285 Old Westport Rd., North Dartmouth, MA 02747, United States.

Background: The role of uncertainty, unpredictable symptoms, and unknown illness trajectory are frequent concerns reported in heart failure (HF) literature. Illness uncertainty can lead to difficulty interpreting symptoms, potentially impacting outcomes. Impaired functional status, quality of life, all-cause mortality, rehospitalization, and event-free survival are predicted by symptom clusters.

Nursing student perceptions of required online educational programs utilized outside the classroom.

Nurse Educ Today

October 2021

College of Nursing and Health Science, University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth, 285 Old Westport Road, North Dartmouth, MA 02474, United States of America. Electronic address:

Background: The use of online educational programs (OEPs) such as ATI™, Kaplan™, and Course Point™, to facilitate learning is generally thought to be an innovative and complementary approach to supplement learning across many nursing programs. The rapid transition to an online learning environment, dominated by Zoom, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic has further increased faculty and student reliance on OEPs both in and out of the classroom. The aim of this study is to examine student perceptions of faculty assigned OEPs utilized outside the classroom.

Diabetes is associated with increased fracture risk in human bone, especially in the elderly population. In the present study, we investigate how simulated advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) and materials heterogeneity affect crack growth trajectory in human cortical bone. We used a phase field fracture framework on 2D models of cortical microstructure created from human tibias to analyze crack propagation.

In this case study, phage therapy was applied to treat a multidrug-resistant case of septicemic cutaneous ulcerative disease (SCUD) caused by Citrobacter freundii in a loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta. Phages were applied topically, intravenously, into the carapace, and into the exhibit water using various phage cocktails specific to the causative agent over an 8-month period. This was performed in conjunction with antimicrobial therapy.
