The glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors (GR and MR, respectively) have distinct, yet overlapping physiological and pathophysiological functions. There are indications that both receptors interact functionally and physically, but the precise role of this interdependence is poorly understood. Here, we analyzed the impact of GR coexpression on MR genome-wide transcriptional responses and chromatin binding upon activation by aldosterone and glucocorticoids, both physiological ligands of this receptor.

Soluble urokinase type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) has gained attention as a potential prognostic biomarker in acute sepsis.

PhysioCAFUN: a competency-based curriculum development guideline to strengthen physiology education in Africa.

Physiology education in Africa faces challenges due to gaps in curricula across many of its universities, such as divergent content, a lack of standardized competencies, and suitable benchmarking. Here, we describe the development of the Physiology Curriculum for African Universities (PhysioCAFUN), a competency-based curriculum development guideline, as a first step to address such shortcomings. A committee of 15 physiologists from different African regions, Europe, and the United States was constituted to draft the PhysioCAFUN, which was introduced and revised during the joint East African Society of Physiological Sciences (EASPS) and African Association of Physiological Sciences (AAPS) conference held in Tanzania late 2023.

Phosphatidylserine-incorporated exosome mimetics encapsulating CXCR3 antagonist alleviate osteoporosis.

Exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells are an active area of research due to their therapeutic potential in treating osteoporosis. To further harness their therapeutic performance in modulating bone resorption, we have equipped exosomes with osteoclast-targeting moieties on their surface as well as chemokine receptor antagonists blocking osteoclast recruitment. Phosphatidylserine (PS), a membrane lipid exerting immunosuppressive and phagocytic signals, was incorporated in the membrane of exosome mimetics (EMs) to achieve a marked affinity for osteoclast precursors and potential anti-resorptive effects.

In this work the 4-point polarizable SWM4 Drude water model is reparametrized. Multiple models were developed using different strategies toward reproduction of specific target data. Results indicate that no individual model can reproduce all the selected target data in the context of the present form of the potential energy function.

A Qualitative Method To Assess a History of Cerebral Malaria in Malian Children.

The investigation of factors associated with susceptibility to severe malaria is best achieved using case-control studies. The presence of a history of severe malaria in controls could affect the quality of their phenotype and study findings and hence should be rigorously determined. Here, we assessed the performance of a qualitative questionnaire to identify a history of cerebral malaria in controls in a case-control study of severe malaria in Mali.

Force Field Limitations of All-Atom Continuous Constant pH Molecular Dynamics.

All-atom constant pH molecular dynamics simulations offer a powerful tool for understanding pH-mediated and proton-coupled biological processes. As the protonation equilibria of protein side chains are shifted by electrostatic interactions and desolvation energies, p values calculated from the constant pH simulations may be sensitive to the underlying protein force field and water model. Here we investigated the force field dependence of the all-atom particle mesh Ewald (PME) continuous constant pH (PME-CpHMD) simulations of a mini-protein BBL.

The Palliative Arts: Envisioning a New Paradigm in Palliative Care.

A growing body of evidence supports the effectiveness of arts-based interventions in nurturing human connection, healing, and reflection-for patients living with illness, their families, and their health care communities. Thus, we propose that these interventions, what we call the Palliative Arts-just as much as science-should be systematically integrated in clinical education, practice, research, wellness, leadership, and advocacy to impact person-centered outcomes. Our interprofessional team describes a variety of arts-based programming that its authors are leading to highlight the breadth of existing Palliative Arts work and point to future horizons for its integration in health care education and clinical settings.

Integrative Medicine Elective for the Well-being of Pharmacy Students.

Objective: To describe the impact of an integrative medicine elective on the well-being of pharmacy students at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and examine the relationship between perceived stress and happiness.

Methods: Students completed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS) before and 3 months after taking the course. Our study compared the outcomes of each composite score from the PSS and SHS before and after course participation to detect any difference.

Background: The Narrative Experiences Online (NEON) Intervention provides self-managed web-based access to mental health recovery narratives (n = 659). We evaluated effectiveness and cost-effectiveness in improving quality of life for adults resident in England with mental health problems and recent psychosis experience.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major threat to human and animal health, and antimicrobial use selects for AMR. Appropriate selection of antimicrobial drugs is an important part of veterinary education, but many veterinary students report that they have knowledge gaps in this area. Students with greater self-efficacy, the belief that one can perform the individual steps that comprise a task, tend to expend more effort and motivation in learning new skills.

Cancer remains a major global cause of death, posing significant treatment challenges. Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), is categorized into two primary clades: Clade I and Clade II, with notable outbreaks linked to Clade IIb. Historically endemic in Africa, recent years have seen significant global spread. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in August 2024, highlighting the emergence of Clade Ib outside Africa and the broadening demographic impact of the outbreak.

Effect of Inpatient Pharmacist-Led Medication Reconciliations on Medication-Related Interventions in Intensive Care Unit Recovery Centers.

Critical care pharmacists complete comprehensive medication reviews in Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) patients at Intensive Care Unit Recovery Centers (ICU-RCs) to optimize medication therapies after hospital discharge. Inpatient pharmacists often complete medication reconciliations prior to hospital discharge, which could affect interventions at an ICU-RC. However, this association remains ill-described.

The Pharmacogenomics Global Research Network Implementation Working Group: global collaboration to advance pharmacogenetic implementation.

Pharmacogenetics promises to optimize treatment-related outcomes by informing optimal drug selection and dosing based on an individual's genotype in conjunction with other important clinical factors. Despite significant evidence of genetic associations with drug response, pharmacogenetic testing has not been widely implemented into clinical practice. Among the barriers to broad implementation are limited guidance for how to successfully integrate testing into clinical workflows and limited data on outcomes with pharmacogenetic implementation in clinical practice.
