January 2014

Academic Department of Urology, La Pitié-Salpetrière Hospital, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Faculté de Médecine Pierre et Marie Curie, University Paris VI, Paris, France.

Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of a history of bladder cancer (BC) or synchronous BC on the prognosis and survival of patients who have undergone radical nephroureterectomy (RNU).

Methods And Materials: Using a multi-institutional, retrospective database, we identified 662 patients with upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UUT-UC) treated by radical nephroureterectomy, between 1995 and 2010. We analyzed clinicopathologic characteristics and outcomes according to the history of BC or concomitant BC or both, at the time of diagnosis.

Agam (Anopheles gambiae) relies on its olfactory system to target human prey, leading eventually to the injection of Plasmodium falciparum, the malaria vector. OBPs (odorant-binding proteins) are the first line of proteins involved in odorant recognition. They interact with olfactory receptors and thus constitute an interesting target for insect control.

Background: Two-dimensional echocardiography images obtained at end-diastole and end-systole and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) images obtained at end-diastole represent the three imaging methodologies validated for diagnosis of left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC). No study has compared these methodologies in assessing the magnitude of non-compaction.

Aims: To compare two-dimensional echocardiography with CMR in the evaluation of patients with suspected LVNC.

Background: I conducted a prospective study to assess the effectiveness of an absorbable calcium hydroxyapatite (Hac) layer mixed with vancomycin applied to the articular surface of prosthetic implants in preventing deep infections after noncemented total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This severe complication of TKA occurs in 2%-7% of cases.

Methods: In all, 135 consecutive noncemented TKAs were performed in 126 patients, who were divided into 2 groups.

MDCT of the myocardium: a new contribution to ischemic heart disease.

Acad Radiol

April 2008

Department of Radiology, Hopital de la Timone, University of Marseille Méditerranée, 264 rue St Pierre, 13385 Marseille Cedex 5, France.

Rationale And Objectives: Despite the progress made in diagnosis and treatment, cardiovascular diseases remain the main cause of death worldwide.

Materials And Methods: Multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) provides several diagnostic insights, namely assessment of coronary artery anatomy and measurement of left ventricular volume and function. The ability of CT to show myocardial infarcted areas as an enhanced territory was described in the late 1970s in an animal model.

Background: Periodontal disease (PD) has been recognized as a risk factor for systemic diseases, but its involvement in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD) remains debated.

Objectives: We sought to evaluate the potential relations between severity of the PD, inflammatory response and angiographic lesions extent in patients with stable CAD.

Design: A total of 131 subjects referred to our centre for coronary angiography were evaluated for presence and extension of CAD, then divided into two groups, one with presence of lesions (cases, n = 85) and other one with absence of lesions (controls, n = 46).

Information and System Science Laboratory in the Computer Graphics Dept. (Image & Modèle), University of Marseille II - Faculté des Sciences de Luminy, Marseille, France.

In this paper, we present a new approach for contour detection in the frame of OCT images of the cornea. With the aim of detecting upper and lower curves that define the cornea in radial slices, we have elaborated a three step specific method. The first step consists in finding epithelium and endothelium points (we call them anchor points).

Patients with schizophrenia consistently fail to perform facial affect recognition tasks as accurately as healthy controls. So far, the effects of different antipsychotic drugs on this deficit, as well as the mechanisms through which these drugs may exert their influence on face processing models, remain poorly understood. Twenty-five hospitalised acute schizophrenic patients were randomised to either haloperidol or risperidone following their admission.

Background: The palatal masticatory mucosa is widely used as a connective tissue donor site in gingival recession treatment. However, concern has been raised regarding the potential risk of damaging the greater palatine artery (GPA) due to anatomical variations in the palatal vault. The anatomy of the palatal vault in terms of size and shape may affect the maximum dimensions of the graft that can be safely taken from the palatal vault.

Internal defibrillation: where we have been and where we should be going?

J Interv Card Electrophysiol

August 2005

Division of Cardiology, School of Medicine, University of Marseille, Chemin des Bourrellys, Marseille, France.

Internal cardioversion has been developed as an alternative technique for patients who are resistant to external DC cardioversion of atrial fibrillation (AF) and was found to be associated with higher success rates. It used initially high energies (200-300 J) delivered between an intracardiac catheter and a backplate. Subsequent studies have shown that it is possible to terminate with energies of 1 to 6 Joules, paroxysmal or induced AF in 90 percent of patients and persistent AF in 75 percent of patients, using biphasic shocks delivered between a right atrium-coronary sinus vectors.
