Background: Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is one of the world's classical neglected tropical diseases representing a major public health threat in sub-Saharan Africa. Although the parasitic disease is in decline in the Republic of Congo, the better understanding of the epidemiological situation of active foci is required to reduce the risk of disease resurgence which could impede progress registered so far. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of HAT and the associated risk factors in individuals living in remote areas of the Republic of Congo.

Wood density (WD) relates to important tree functions such as stem mechanics and resistance against pathogens. This functional trait can exhibit high intraindividual variability both radially and vertically. With the rise of LiDAR-based methodologies allowing nondestructive tree volume estimations, failing to account for WD variations related to tree function and biomass investment strategies may lead to large systematic bias in AGB estimations.

Introduction: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is common in human immune deficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Immune deficiencies caused by HIV give rise to numerous opportunistic gastrointestinal pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori, the commonest cause of chronic gastritis. The study sought to determine the relationship between H pylori infection and the MetS among HIV-infected clinic attendees.

Aim: The present study examined whether or not the resistance to degradation of bradykinin analogs affects the kinin-potentiating action of the inhibitor of converting enzyme, perindoprilat.
Methods: Hydrolysis of Hyp3,Tyr(Me)8 -bradykinin by ACE present in isolated canine coronary arteries was assessed by determination of peptide metabolites using electrospray mass spectrometry, and compared to that of bradykinin. Contractions and relaxations of isolated rings of coronary arteries, with and without endothelium, were recorded as changes in isometric force.
