In this work, we present a novel modeling framework to investigate the effects of collateral circulation into the coronary blood flow physiology. A prototypical model of the coronary tree, integrated with the concept of Collateral Flow Index (CFI), is employed to gain insight about the role of model parameters associated with the collateral circuitry, which results in physically-realizable solutions for specific CFI data. Then, we discuss the mathematical feasibility of pressure-derived CFI, anatomical implications and practical considerations involving the estimation of model parameters in collateral connections.

Solanum tuberosum aspartic Proteases (StAPs) show selective plasma membrane permeabilization, inducing cytotoxicity of cancer cells versus normal cells in vitro. Herein, we aimed to evaluate both StAP3 systemic toxicity and antitumoral activity against human melanoma in vivo. The toxicity of a single high dose of StAP3 (10 µg/g body weight, intraperitoneally) was assessed in a Balb/c mice model.

Understanding the formation mechanisms of nanoparticles is essential for the synthesis of nanomaterials with controlled properties. In solution synthesis, capping agents are used to mediate this process and control the final size and shape of the particles. In this work, the synthesis of silver nanoparticles, with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the capping agent, is studied through molecular dynamics simulations.

The relationship between structure and dynamical behavior (super-Arrhenius temperature dependence of relaxation time accompanied by heterogeneous dynamics) in glassy materials remains an open issue in the physics of condensed matter. The question of whether this dynamic phenomena have a thermodynamic origin or not still remains unanswered. In this work we analyze several dynamic and structural parameters in a polymer glass-former by means of molecular dynamics simulations.

Objectives: Previous research from high-income countries has consistently shown an association between alcohol-related harms and neighborhood characteristics such as alcohol outlet density, but this research has not been extended to middle- and low-income countries. We assessed the role of neighborhood characteristics such as alcohol outlet density, overcrowding and crime rates, and individual characteristics including gender, age, alcohol and marijuana use, and geographic mobility associated with alcohol-related injuries in university students in Argentina.
Methods: Data were collected from a randomized sample of students attending a national public university (n = 1346).

Tannins are polyphenolic compounds historically utilized in textile and adhesive industries, but also in traditional human and animal medicines or foodstuffs. Since 20th-century, advances in analytical chemistry have allowed disclosure of the chemical nature of these molecules. The chemical profile of extracts obtained from previously selected species was investigated to try to establish a bridge between traditional background and scientific data.

A dispersion of elongated nanostructures with a high aspect ratio in polymer matrices has been reported to provide a material with valuable properties such as mechanical strength, barrier effect and shape memory, among others. In this study, we show the procedure to achieve a distribution of elongated crystalline nanodomains in a PS matrix employing the self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers (BCP). The selected BCP was polystyrene-block-polyethylene oxide (PS-b-PEO).

Overexpression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), which is linked to multidrug resistance (MDR), is one of the underlying obstacles to the success of chemotherapy as it reduces the efficacy of anticancer drugs and the side effects of these increase as a result of any increased dose to achieve the therapeutic effect. To identify agents with P-gp inhibitory properties, ethanol extracts from 80 plants were screened for their ability to increase intracellular doxorubicin-associated fluorescence, and the extract of Ligaria cuneifolia was found to be the most effective. Its bioassay-guided isolation yielded the pentacyclic triterpene betulin as active agent.

Adding value to seaweed by extracting their different bioactive compounds and incorporating them into foods represent an interesting and strategic approach to diversify the functional foods offer. However, once harvested, fresh seaweed must overcome a sequence of crucial steps to confer their biological activity. Pre-processing operations and extraction processes, as well as long-term storage, play important roles in improving or decreasing the phlorotannins content.

Some years ago, our group reported the presence of the female prostate in all the studied females of the plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus). The goal of the present study was to characterize and compare the female prostate gland between adult pregnant and non-pregnant plains viscacha using histochemical, lectin-histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques, as well as optic and electron microscopy. Structurally, alveoli are lined by a simple epithelium formed by different cell types: basal cells, secretory cells in different stages of the secretory cycle and cells of clear cytoplasm.

Metal/polymer nanocomposites have attracted much attention in recent years due to their exceptional properties and wide range of potential applications. A key challenge to obtain these materials is to stabilize the metal nanoparticles in the matrix, avoiding uncontrolled aggregation processes driven by the high surface free energy of nanosized particles. Here, we investigate the aggregation mechanism of primary particles in gold-epoxy nanocomposites prepared via light-assisted in situ synthesis, under different irradiation conditions.

Introduction And Aims: Research on corporate behaviour can contribute to the understanding of the possible adverse impacts of alcohol-industry corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and their potential influence on policymaking. This study explores the association between alcohol-industry CSR activities and selected country features in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Design And Methods: Nine health experts evaluated 148 CSR activities using a standardised protocol; activities were classified into the categories risk management CSR (rmCSR), that is, to avoid/rectify externalities (n = 67), and strategic CSR, that is, to fulfill philanthropic responsibilities (n = 81).

Given the growing tendency of consumers to choose products with natural ingredients, food industries have directed scientific research in this direction. In this regard, algae are an attractive option for the research, since they can synthesize a group of secondary metabolites, called phenolic compounds, associated with really promising properties and bioactivities. The objective of this work was to classify the major phenolic compounds, compare the effectiveness of the different extractive techniques used for their extraction, from traditional systems (like heat assisted extraction) to the most advance ones (such as ultrasound, microwave or supercritical fluid extraction); the available methods for identification and quantification; the stability of the enriched extract in phenolic compounds and the main bioactivities described for these secondary metabolites, to offer an overview of the situation to consider if it is possible and/or convenient an orientation of phenolic compounds from algae towards an industrial application.

The elimination of rubber wastes without affecting the environment is one of the most important challenges of the 21st century waste management. Accordingly, the present work is focused on the recycling of natural rubber (NR) industry waste by means of devulcanization in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO) atmosphere. With that aim, a novel device allowing to perform rubber devulcanization was developed.

Whereas CMIR is a key process to control intracellular pathogens, its value at identifying cattle exposed to the abortigenic intracellular coccidian parasite Neospora caninum is unknown. In this work, we have evaluated a DTH skin testing in cattle exposed to N.

The speed of our hand movements can be affected by concurrent processing of manual action verbs (MaVs). Whereas this phenomenon is well established for native languages (L1s), it remains underexplored in late foreign languages (L2s), especially during highly automatized tasks. Here we timed keystroke activity while Spanish-English bilinguals copied MaVs, non-manual action verbs, and non-action verbs in their L1 and L2.
