Article Synopsis
  • Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis are increasingly common in North America, and this study specifically looked at their incidence and prevalence in Manitoba from 2010 to 2019.
  • By analyzing health care data and applying case-finding algorithms, researchers found that the incidence rates of cirrhosis increased significantly, particularly among young adults aged 18-44 and consistently higher in females than males.
  • The study calls for urgent strategies for prevention and early detection to address the rising trends of cirrhosis and its impact on public health.

In December 2022, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a clinical guideline for point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The guideline outlined the development and current status of POCUS in the NICU, and summarized the key elements and implementation guidelines for successful implementation of POCUS in the NICU. This article provides an overview of the key points of the clinical guideline and analyzes the current status of POCUS in China, providing a reference for the implementation of POCUS in neonatal care in China.

Use of Point-of-Care Ultrasonography in the NICU for Diagnostic and Procedural Purposes.

Pediatrics

Departments of Radiology and Pediatrics, University of Colorado School of Medicine, Children's Hospital Colorado, Aurora, Colorado.

Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) refers to the use of portable imaging performed by the provider clinician at the bedside for diagnostic, therapeutic, and procedural purposes. POCUS could be considered an extension of the physical examination but not a substitute for diagnostic imaging. Use of POCUS in emergency situations can be lifesaving in the NICU if performed in a timely fashion for cardiac tamponade, pleural effusions, pneumothorax, etc, with potential for enhancing quality of care and improving outcomes.

Background: First Nations (FN) women have a higher risk of diabetes than non-FN women in Canada. Prenatal education and breastfeeding may reduce the risk of diabetes in mothers and offspring. The rates of breastfeeding initiation and participation in the prenatal program are low in FN communities.

It has long been known that large soft anions like bromide, iodide and thiocyanate are protein denaturing agents, but their mechanism of action is still unclear. In this work we have investigated the protein denaturing properties of these anions using Ribonuclease A (RNase A) as a model protein system. Salt-induced perturbations to the protein folding free energy were determined using differential scanning calorimetry and the results demonstrate that the addition of sodium iodide and sodium thiocyanate significantly decreases the melting temperature of the protein.

Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery and Center of Molecular Medicine, Karolinska Institutet Stockholm, Sweden ; Department of Clinical Genetics, Karolinska University Hospital Stockholm, Sweden.

Nonsense mutations in FGF16 have recently been linked to X-linked recessive hand malformations with fusion between the fourth and the fifth metacarpals and hypoplasia of the fifth digit (MF4; MIM#309630). The purpose of this study was to perform careful clinical phenotyping and to define molecular mechanisms behind X-linked recessive MF4 in three unrelated families. We performed whole-exome sequencing, and identified three novel mutations in FGF16.

Acute bacterial sinusitis (ABS), acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB), and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) are common conditions and constitute a substantial socioeconomic burden. The ketolides are a new class of antibacterials with a targeted spectrum of antibacterial activity. In vitro, telithromycin is active against common bacterial pathogens that cause upper and lower respiratory tract infections, including some isolates that are resistant to other antibiotic classes.
