This is a selection of papers presented at the 30th North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference held in Orlando in October 2016. The papers discussed are thought to be of particular interest to CF caregivers in the UK. We highlight the major themes covered in the conference including novel therapies, recently published and proposed guidelines and insights from registry studies.

Pneumothorax is a serious but common complication in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). It has adverse prognostic implications as well as associations with subsequent reduction in lung function and significant risk of recurrence. Management dilemmas frequently occur that are beyond current guidelines.

Staphylococcus aureus is an important pathogen within the context of cystic fibrosis lung disease. Case reports have identified a strong association between the toxin Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) and lethal necrotizing pneumonia in healthy immunocompetent patients. PVL+ strains of Staphylococcus aureus have also been identified in patients with cystic fibrosis.
