Self-assembling peptides remain persistently interesting objects for building nanostructures and further assemble into macroscopic structures, hydrogels, at sufficiently high concentrations. The modulation of self-assembling β-sheet-forming peptide sequences, with a selection from the full library of amino acids, offers unique possibility for rational tuning of the resulting nanostructured morphology and topology of the formed hydrogel networks. In the present work, we explored how a known β-sheet-disassembling amino acid, proline (P), affects the self-assembly and gelation properties of amphipathic peptides.

Unexpected peaks in volumes of attendances at hospital emergency departments (EDs) have been found to affect waiting times, intensity of care and outcomes. We ask whether these effects of ED crowding on patients are caused by poor clinical prioritisation or a quality-quantity trade-off generated by a binding capacity constraint. We study the effects of crowding created by lower-severity patients on the outcomes of approximately 13 million higher-severity patients attending the 140 public EDs in England between April 2016 and March 2017.

Methods: An international Delphi panel was created with 23 clinicians representing major specialities, general dentistry and related fields.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are a vast family of nanoporous solids with potential applications ranging from drug delivery to environmental remediation. Application of MOFs in these scenarios is hindered, however, by difficulties in MOF 'activation' after initial synthesis - removal of the synthesis solvent from the pores to make the pore space accessible - often leading to framework collapse if improperly performed. While experimental studies have correlated collapse to specific solvent properties and conditions, the mechanism of activation-collapse is currently unknown.

However, it has been shown that the approach currently taken by most UK police forces, the Domestic Abuse, Stalking, and Honour Based Violence (DASH) risk assessment, is not identifying the most vulnerable victims. Instead, we tested several machine learning algorithms and propose a predictive model, using logistic regression with elastic net as the best performing, that incorporates information readily available in police databases, and census-area-level statistics.

Starting from a description of the main challenges facing LGBT workers' identity management, the review examines manifestations of negative attitudes towards gender and sexual minority groups, highlighting processes of subtle discrimination and exclusion. It presents and critiques dominant organizational responses to LGBT stigmatization, highlighting the need for holistic, intersectional approaches, and pointing out issues requiring further research.

In this study, we present the use of sucrose (CHO), which exists in abundance in nature, to prepare a carbon membrane without any preceding treatments. The preparation procedure was conducted using a low pyrolysis temperature, , in the range of 300-500 °C, followed by complete formation of the structure of the carbon membrane. The gas separation characteristics of the resulting membranes were assessed by evaluating both hydrogen and methane permeation.

Relative Biological Effectiveness (RBE), the ratio of doses between radiation modalities to produce the same biological endpoint, is a controversial and important topic in proton therapy. A number of phenomenological models incorporate variable RBE as a function of Linear Energy Transfer (LET), though a lack of mechanistic description limits their applicability. In this work we take a different approach, using a track structure model employing fundamental physics and chemistry to make predictions of proton and photon induced DNA damage, the first step in the mechanism of radiation-induced cell death.

From the ongoing alignment exercise between SNOMED CT and the new version of ICD, now in its pre-final form, we studied whether the ambiguity of clinical language as displayed by SNOMED CT synonyms hampers the quality of SNOMED CT axioms following the SNOMED CT "concept model". We measure the rate of synonyms in the semantic misalignment between classes from the chapter on circulatory diseases of the ICD-11 beta version and SNOMED CT concepts with the same description names.

Although these two tasks are closely linked, the available inference methods treat them separately: a primary model is used to estimate expression and its output is post processed by using a differential expression model. In the paper, both issues are simultaneously addressed by proposing the joint estimation of expression levels and differential expression: the unknown relative abundance of each transcript can either be equal or not between two conditions.

We investigate the application of distributional semantics models for facilitating unsupervised extraction of biomedical terms from unannotated corpora. Term extraction is used as the first step of an ontology learning process that aims to (semi-)automatic annotation of biomedical concepts and relations from more than 300K PubMed titles and abstracts. We experimented with both traditional distributional semantics methods such as Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) as well as the neural language models CBOW and Skip-gram from Deep Learning.
