Intergenerational and transgenerational epigenetic effects resulting from conditions in previous generations can contribute to environmental adaptation as well as disease susceptibility. Previous studies in rodent and human models have shown that abnormal developmental exposure to thyroid hormone affects endocrine function and thyroid hormone sensitivity in later generations. Since the imprinted type 3 deiodinase gene () regulates sensitivity to thyroid hormones, we hypothesize its epigenetic regulation is altered in descendants of thyroid hormone overexposed individuals.

Mammalian centromeres are satellite-rich chromatin domains that serve as sites for kinetochore complex assembly. Centromeres are highly variable in sequence and satellite organization across species, but the processes that govern the co-evolutionary dynamics between rapidly evolving centromeres and their associated kinetochore proteins remain poorly understood. Here, we pursue a course of phylogenetic analyses to investigate the molecular evolution of the complete kinetochore complex across primate and rodent species with divergent centromere repeat sequences and features.

Estuaries are essential habitats for recreational and commercial fish that are shaped by both natural and anthropogenic processes. In Louisiana a combination of climate change and planned coastal restoration actions is predicted to increase freshwater introduction to coastal estuaries. As such there is a need to quantify the relationships between estuarine fish ecology and salinity to aid in predicting how species will respond to shifts in salinity.

Tree species appear to prefer distinct climatic conditions, but the true nature of these preferences is obscured by species interactions and dispersal, which limit species' ranges. We quantified realized and potential thermal niches of 188 North American tree species to conduct a continental-scale test of the architecture of niches. We found strong and consistent evidence that species occurring at thermal extremes occupy less than three-quarters of their potential niches, and species' potential niches overlap at a mean annual temperature of ~12°C.

In this study, novel adsorbents were synthesized via the activation and magnetization of carbon spheres, graphene, and carbon nanotubes fabricated from plastics to improve their surface area and porosity and facilitate their separation from aqueous solutions. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy "FTIR", X-ray diffraction "XRD", energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy "EDX", transmission electron microscope "TEM", and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy "XPS" affirmed the successful activation and magnetization of the fabricated materials. Further, surface area analysis showed that the activation and magnetization enhanced the surface area.

Glaucophytes, an enigmatic group of freshwater algae, occupy a pivotal position within the Archaeplastida, providing insights into the early evolutionary history of plastids and their host cells. These algae possess unique plastids, known as cyanelles that retain certain ancestral features, enabling a better understanding of the plastid transition from cyanobacteria. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) can form strong biodegradable films; however, due to their hydrophilicity, moisture can degrade their mechanical and barrier properties. Corn zein (CZ) is a hydrophobic protein that when covalently linked with CNF films through peptide bonds, may improve their hydrophobicity. CZ was covalently linked to aminophenylacetic acid and aminobenzoic acid esterified CNF films which were then assessed for evidence of modification, hydrophobicity, mechanical properties, and antioxidant activity.

Chytrids, often overshadowed by their other fungal counterparts, take center stage as we unravel the mysteries surrounding new species within Rhizophydiales and explore their unique characteristics. In the broader spectrum of chytrids, their significance lies not only in their roles as decomposers but also as key players in nutrient cycling within aquatic ecosystems as parasites and saprobes. Baited soil and aquatic samples collected from various provinces of Thailand, yielded new species of the Rhizophydiales (Chytridiomycota), some of which expanded previously single species genera.

Photocatalytic membranes integrate membrane separation and photocatalysis to deliver an efficient solution for water purification, while the top priority is to exploit simple, efficient, renewable, and low-cost photocatalytic membrane materials. We herein propose a facile one-stone-two-birds strategy to construct a multifunctional regenerated cellulose composite membrane decorated by Prussian blue analogue (ZnPBA) microspheres for wastewater purification. The hypotheses are that: 1) ZnCl not only serves as a cellulose solvent for tuning cellulose dissolution and regeneration, but also functions as a precursor for in-situ growth of spherical-like ZnPBA; 2) More homogeneous reactions including coordination and hydrogen bonding among Zn, [Fe(CN)] and cellulose chains contribute to a rapid and uniform anchoring of ZnPBA microspheres on the regenerated cellulose fibrils (RCFs).

Microplastics in the aquatic environment are susceptible to colonization by surrounding microorganisms, which form biofilms over the microplastic's surface. These biofilm-laden microplastics can then interact with a diverse array of contaminants. Ecological theory predicts that kelp forests structured by trophic cascades should experience recovery and persistence of their foundation species when herbivores become rare. Yet, climate change may be altering the outcomes of top-down forcing in kelp forests, especially those located in regions that have rapidly warmed in recent decades, such as the Gulf of Maine. Here, using data collected annually from 30+ sites spanning >350 km of coastline, we explored the dynamics of Maine's kelp forests in the ~20 years after a fishery-induced elimination of sea urchin herbivores.

In an oil exploitation process, hydrogel plugging agents can effectively reduce the water-oil intermixing, decrease water extraction volume, and enhance oil recovery rate. The practical applications of traditional polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel plugging agents in oilfield are limited by their non-biodegradability, poor mechanical performance, and inferior temperature-resistance. This work developed a mechanically stable and high-temperature-resistant composite hydrogel (STP) by incorporating biodegradable scleroglucan (Slg) and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN) in the PAM hydrogel.

Obesity contributes to many cancers, including breast cancer and multiple myeloma, two cancers that often colonize the bone marrow (BM). Obesity often causes metabolic disease, but at the cellular level, there is uncertainty regarding how these shifts affect cellular phenotypes. Evidence is building that different types of fuel affect tumor cell metabolism, mitochondrial function, and signaling pathways differently, but tumor cells are also flexible and adapt to less-than ideal metabolic conditions, suggesting that single-pronged attacks on tumor metabolism may not be efficacious enough to be effective clinically.

Seizures are caused by abnormally synchronous brain activity that can result in changes in muscle tone, such as twitching, stiffness, limpness, or rhythmic jerking. These behavioral manifestations are clear on visual inspection and the most widely used seizure scoring systems in preclinical models, such as the Racine scale in rodents, use these behavioral patterns in semiquantitative seizure intensity scores. However, visual inspection is time-consuming, low-throughput, and partially subjective, and there is a need for rigorously quantitative approaches that are scalable.

Childhood TBI is associated with a range of difficulties, including CCDs, that can adversely impact functioning and participation into adulthood.
