Disentangling Gender and Relative Age Effects in Women's and Girls' Rugby Union.

J Funct Morphol Kinesiol

March 2024

Department of Clinical and Biological Sciences, University of Turin, 10126 Turin, Italy.

Relative age effects (RAEs) within sports refer to the overrepresentation of athletes born earlier in the selection year and the underrepresentation of those born later in the selection year. Research examining RAEs in women's and girls' rugby union remains limited in comparison to the male literature, whilst the impacts of RAEs on the youth-senior transition are yet to be explored in a female sport context. As such, the purpose of this study was to examine RAEs during entry into the women's and girls' premiership and international rugby union pathways in England, as well as to compare them to their respective senior cohort ( = 1367): (a) U18 England Rugby Centre of Excellence Player ( = 325) vs.

Introduction: The research in consumer neuroscience has identified computational methods, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, as a significant frontier for advancement. Previously, we utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) to model brain processes related to brand preferences in a paradigm exempted from motor actions. In the current study, we revisit this data, introducing recent advancements in explainable artificial intelligence (xAI) to gain insights into this domain.

This study investigated the effects of match location, quality of opposition (classified into: strong [1st to 4th position]; intermediate [5th to 15th position]; weak [16th to 20th position]), and match outcome on the match running performance of starters and non-starters from a top elite Brazilian soccer team. Absolute measures were calculated using total distance, high-speed (19.8-25.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the external training load of professional goalkeepers (GKs) during different training sessions in relation to match days.
  • Three GKs were monitored using GPS devices across various microcycle days (MD+1 to MD-1), measuring metrics like total distance, dive frequency, and intensity of jumps.
  • Results indicated that external load decreases as match day approaches, showing the highest load at MD+1 and MD-4, and the lowest just before the match (MD-1), providing valuable insights for training and recovery strategies for GKs.

The network theory of psychopathology suggests that symptoms in a disorder form a network and that identifying central symptoms within this network might be important for an effective and personalized treatment. However, recent evidence has been inconclusive. We analyzed contemporaneous idiographic networks of depression and anxiety symptoms.

Respiratory sarcopenia screening in dialysis patients: cross-sectional and multicentre study protocol.

BMC Nephrol

January 2024

Ciências Pneumológicas Post-Graduation Programme, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Rua Ramiro Barcelos, 2400 2º andar, Porto Alegre, RS, 90035-003, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Background: Respiratory sarcopenia is characterized by the weakness of respiratory muscles associated with sarcopenia due to aging or systemic diseases such as chronic kidney disease (CKD). Patients with CKD undergoing dialysis are particularly susceptible to respiratory muscle weakness caused by factors such as fluid overload and electrolyte imbalance. This weakness not only affects ventilation but also impairs oxygen uptake and delivery to muscle tissue, potentially leading to severe sarcopenia.

We determined the coadjuvant effect of a recreational futsal (RF) programme versus standard care alone (CON) in men with treated arterial hypertension (TAHT). Thirty-nine men with TAHT were randomised to RF ( = 20; 48 ± 8 years; systolic blood pressure [SBP]: 122 ± 14 mmHg) with 2-3 one-hour sessions/week for 3 months, or to CON ( = 19; 51 ± 6 years; SBP: 126 ± 13 mmHg). Participants were assessed at baseline, at 3 months, and after 1 month of training cessation (4 months).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare external load measurements between arbitrary and individualized speed thresholds in professional soccer players, and to check how these measurements relate to internal load during training and matches.
  • Over a 6-week period, ten players were monitored using GPS technology to track various running metrics—medium, high, sprint, and very high-intensity distances—based on individual speed thresholds.
  • Results indicated that individualized thresholds significantly differed from arbitrary ones, leading to a better understanding of external load, but both threshold approaches showed similar correlations with internal load metrics.
