Prediabetes can be reversed through lifestyle intervention, but its main pathologic hallmark, insulin resistance (IR), cannot be detected as conveniently as blood glucose testing. In consequence, the diagnosis of prediabetes is often delayed until patients have hyperglycemia. Therefore, developing a less invasive diagnostic method for rapid IR evaluation will contribute to the prognosis of prediabetes.

2D metal halides have attracted increasing research attention in recent years; however, it is still challenging to synthesize them via liquid-phase methods. Here it is demonstrated that a droplet method is simple and efficient for the synthesis of multiclass 2D metal halides, including trivalent (BiI , SbI ), divalent (SnI , GeI ), and monovalent (CuI) ones. In particular, 2D SbI is first experimentally achieved, of which the thinnest thickness is ≈6 nm.

The ATP-adenosine pathway has emerged as a promising target for cancer therapy, but challenges remain in achieving effective tumor control. Early research focused on blocking the adenosine generating enzyme CD73 and the adenosine receptors A2AR or A2BR in cancer. However, recent studies have shown that targeting CD39, the rate-limiting ecto-enzyme of the ATP-adenosine pathway, can provide more profound anti-tumor efficacy by reducing immune-suppressive adenosine accumulation and increasing pro-inflammatory ATP levels.

Unlabelled: Cancer metastasis is an extremely complex process affected by many factors. An acidic microenvironment can drive cancer cell migration toward blood vessels while also hampering immune cell activity. Here, we identified a mechanism mediated by sialyltransferases that induces an acidic tumor-permissive microenvironment (ATPME) in BRCA1-mutant and most BRCA1-low breast cancers.

Mesenchymal stem/Stromal cells (MSCs) have great therapeutic potentials, and they have been isolated from various tissues and organs including definitive endoderm (DE) organs, such as the lung, liver and intestine. MSCs have been induced from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) through multiple embryonic lineages, including the mesoderm, neural crest, and extraembryonic cells. However, it remains unclear whether hPSCs could give rise to MSCs in vitro through the endodermal lineage.

A desirable lanthanide-based ratiometric fluorescent probe was designed and integrated into a self-designed Fermat spiral microfluidic chip (FS-MC) for the automated determination of a unique bacterial endospore biomarker, dipicolinic acid (DPA), with high selectivity and sensitivity. Here, a blue emission wavelength at 425 nm was generated in the Fermat spiral structure by mixing the europium (Eu) and luminol to form the Eu/Luminol sensing probe. DPA in the reservoir can be used to specifically bind to Eu under the negative pressure and transfer energy from DPA to Eu sequentially via an antenna effect, thus resulting in a significant increase in the red fluorescence emission peak at 615 nm.

Background: Blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption is a major adverse event after ischemic stroke (IS). Caveolin-1 (Cav-1), a scaffolding protein, played multiple roles in BBB permeability after IS, while the pros and cons of Cav-1 on BBB permeability remain controversial. Numerous studies revealed that extracellular vesicles (EVs), especially stem cells derived EVs, exerted therapeutic efficacy on IS; however, the mechanisms of BBB permeability needed to be clearly illustrated.

Since procalcitonin (PCT) is a specific inflammation indicator of severe bacterial inflammation and fungal infection, it is of great significance to construct a sensitive and rapid microfluidic chip to detect PCT in clinical application. The design of micromixers using a lab-on-a-chip (LOC) device is the premise to realizing the adequate mixing of analytical samples and reagents and is an important measure to improve the accuracy and efficiency of determination. In this research study, we investigate the mixing characteristics of hyperbolic micromixers and explore the effects of different hyperbolic curvatures, different Reynolds numbers (Re) and different channel widths on the mixing performance of the micromixers.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials tend to have the preferable formation of vacancies at the outer surface. Here, contrary to the normal notion, we reveal a type of vacancy that thermodynamically initiates from the interior part of the 2D backbone of germanium selenide (γ-GeSe). Interestingly, the Ge-vacancy (V) in the interior part of γ-GeSe possesses the lowest formation energy amongst the various types of defects considered.
