This continuum represents different degrees of integration between physical and virtual environments with three core processes - Active Escapism, Escape, and Dissociation - and two peripheral processes - Gaming-Related Relaxation and Body-Mind Detachment.

Multiomics approaches disclose very-early molecular and cellular switches during insect-venom allergen-specific immunotherapy: an observational study.

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) induces immune tolerance, showing the highest success rate (>95%) for insect venom while a much lower chance for pollen allergy. However, the molecular switches leading to successful durable tolerance restoration remain elusive. The primary outcome of this observational study is the comprehensive immunological cellular characterization during the AIT initiation phase, whereas the secondary outcomes are the serological and Th2-cell-type-specific transcriptomic analyses.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is a well-known cytostatic drug, which is often used in cancer treatments. Yet, it is also a very dangerous compound for people who are occupationally exposed to it for a long time, such as pharmacy employees, nurses and cleaning staff. This review scopes the effects of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on adult patients, considering mainly exercise capacity, lung function, and the occurrence of PPCs.

Modeling early phenotypes of Parkinson's disease by age-induced midbrain-striatum assembloids.

Parkinson's disease, an aging-associated neurodegenerative disorder, is characterised by nigrostriatal pathway dysfunction caused by the gradual loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta of the midbrain. Human in vitro models are enabling the study of the dopaminergic neurons' loss, but not the dysregulation within the dopaminergic network in the nigrostriatal pathway. Additionally, these models do not incorporate aging characteristics which potentially contribute to the development of Parkinson's disease.

Identifying Major Factors for Success and Failure of Conservation Programs in Europe.

In Europe, various conservation programs adopted to maintain or restore biodiversity have experienced differing levels of success. However, a synthesis about major factors for success of biodiversity-related conservation programs across ecosystems and national boundaries, such as incentives, subsidies, enforcement, participation, or spatial context, is missing. Using a balanced scorecard survey among experts, we analyzed and compared factors contributing to success or failure of three different conservation programs: two government programs (Natura 2000 and the ecological measures of the Water Framework Directive) and one conservation program of a non-governmental organization (NGO; Rewilding Europe), all focusing on habitat and species conservation.

Designing giant Hall response in layered topological semimetals.

Noncoplanar magnets are excellent candidates for spintronics. However, such materials are difficult to find, and even more so to intentionally design. Here, we report a chemical design strategy that allows us to find a series of noncoplanar magnets-LnSn (Ln = Dy, Tb)-by targeting layered materials that have decoupled magnetic sublattices with dissimilar single-ion anisotropies and combining those with a square-net topological semimetal sublattice.

User-avatar bond as diagnostic indicator for gaming disorder: A word on the side of caution.

In their study, Stavropoulos et al. (2023) capitalized on supervised machine learning and a longitudinal design and reported that the User-Avatar Bond could be accurately employed to detect Gaming Disorder (GD) risk in a community sample of gamers. The authors suggested that the User-Avatar Bond is a "digital phenotype" that could be used as a diagnostic indicator for GD risk.

How smectic-A and smectic-C liquid crystals resolve confinement-induced frustration in spherical shells.

The layered structure of smectic liquid crystals cannot develop unobstructed when confined to spherical shells with layers extending in the radial direction, since the available cross section area increases from the inside to the outside of the shell yet the number and thickness of layers must be constant. For smectic-A (SmA) liquid crystals, with the layer normal parallel to the director , the frustration breaks up the texture into spherical lune domains with twist deformations of alternating sense, overlaid with a herringbone-like secondary modulation and mediated localized bend regions where the boundary conditions are violated. The SmC phase has more degrees of freedom to resolve the frustration thanks to its non-zero tilt angle between and , but its response to tangential shell confinement was never studied.

A digitally supported multimodal lifestyle program to promote brain health among older adults (the LETHE randomized controlled feasibility trial): study design, progress, and first results.

Background: The Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER) multimodal lifestyle intervention yielded cognitive and other health benefits in older adults at risk of cognitive decline. The two-year multinational randomized controlled LETHE trial evaluates the feasibility of a digitally supported, adapted FINGER intervention among at-risk older adults. Technology is used to complement in-person activities, streamline the intervention delivery, personalize recommendations, and collect digital biomarkers.

Lewy pathology formation in patient-derived GBA1 Parkinson's disease midbrain organoids.

Fibrillary aggregation of α-synuclein in Lewy body inclusions and nigrostriatal dopaminergic neuron degeneration define Parkinson's disease neuropathology. Mutations in GBA1, encoding glucocerebrosidase, are the most frequent genetic risk factor for Parkinson's disease. However, the lack of reliable experimental models able to reproduce key neuropathological signatures has hampered the clarification of the link between mutant glucocerebrosidase and Parkinson's disease pathology.

Real-life use of the PEXIVAS reduced-dose glucocorticoid regimen in granulomatosis with polyangiitis and microscopic polyangiitis.

Background: The PEXIVAS (Plasma exchange and glucocorticoids in severe antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis) trial showed that a reduced-dose glucocorticoid regimen (redGC) was non-inferior to a standard-dose regimen (standGC) with respect to death or end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV). However, the primary endpoint did not include disease progression or relapse, cyclophosphamide was the main induction therapy and rituximab (RTX)-treated patients tended to have a higher risk of death or ESKD with redGC. We aimed to evaluate the real-world use of redGC.

Graph databases in systems biology: a systematic review.

Graph databases are becoming increasingly popular across scientific disciplines, being highly suitable for storing and connecting complex heterogeneous data. In systems biology, they are used as a backend solution for biological data repositories, ontologies, networks, pathways, and knowledge graph databases. In this review, we analyse all publications using or mentioning graph databases retrieved from PubMed and PubMed Central full-text search, focusing on the top 16 available graph databases, Publications are categorized according to their domain and application, focusing on pathway and network biology and relevant ontologies and tools.

The good, the bad and the ugly faces of cyanobiphenyl mesogens in selected tracks of fundamental and applied liquid crystal research.

Liquid crystal-forming cyanobiphenyls are truly extraordinary molecules that have had an enormous impact on liquid crystal research and applications since they were first synthesised. This impact is, on the one hand, due to the exceptionally convenient physical properties of the main characters, 5CB and 8CB, allowing easy experiments at room temperature, as well as their commercial availability at reasonable cost. On the other hand, the cyanobiphenyl chemical structure leads to some quite peculiar characteristics in terms of organisation at the molecular scale, which are sometimes well recognised and even utilised, but often the awareness of these peculiarities is not strong.

Global collaborative research in metabolic and bariatric surgery (GCRMBS): current status and directions for the future.

Obesity has been recognized as a chronic disorder by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and was first reported in the Paleolithic age. In the recent years there has not been an international collaborative that facilitates professional cooperation on a worldwide level to increase the output of high-level evidence in the fields of obesity treatment and metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS). In other surgical and medical fields, international collaborative research networks have shown to increase the quality and amount of treatment-changing evidence.
