Introduction: Gastric electrical stimulation (GES) has been recommended for drug refractory patients with gastroparesis, but no clear baseline predictors of symptom response exist. SARS-CoV-2, the cause of 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), has shown to produce a variety of extrapulmonary manifestations. Rhabdomyolysis due to SARS-CoV-2 infection has been reported mainly in the early course of the disease. In this report, we present the case of a female patient with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection who recovered from respiratory compromise and developed a late-onset rhabdomyolysis successfully managed with oral corticosteroids and aggressive hydration.

Patients who survive the initial ictus of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) remain vulnerable to subsequent injury of the perilesional parenchyma by molecular and cellular responses to the hematoma. Secondary brain injury after ICH, which contributes to long-term functional impairment and mortality, has emerged as an attractive therapeutic target. This review summarizes preclinical and clinical evidence for neuroprotective therapies targeting secondary injury pathways following ICH.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder involving neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques. The tau phosphorylation responsible for neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid deposition which causes plaques are both accelerated through the activity of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO). In addition to these pathological pathways, 5-LO has also been linked to the neuro-inflammation associated with disease progression as well as to dysbiosis in the gut.

Lung-protective ventilation in coronavirus disease 2019 acute respiratory failure may result in severe respiratory acidosis without significant hypoxemia. Low-flow extracorporeal Co removal can facilitate lung-protective ventilation and avoid the adverse effects of severe respiratory acidosis.

The neural crest cell (NCC) is a multipotent progenitor cell population that is sensitive to ethanol and is implicated in the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Studies have shown that sulforaphane (SFN) can prevent ethanol-induced apoptosis in NCCs. This study aims to investigate whether ethanol exposure can induce apoptosis in human NCCs (hNCCs) through epigenetically suppressing the expression of anti-apoptotic genes and whether SFN can restore the expression of anti-apoptotic genes and prevent apoptosis in ethanol-exposed hNCCs.

Spinal cord epidural stimulation (scES) has enabled volitional lower extremity movements in individuals with chronic and clinically motor complete spinal cord injury and no clinically detectable brain influence. The aim of this study was to understand whether the individuals' neuroanatomical characteristics or positioning of the scES electrode were important factors influencing the extent of initial recovery of lower limb voluntary movements in those with clinically motor complete paralysis. We hypothesized that there would be significant correlations between the number of joints moved during attempts with scES prior to any training interventions and the amount of cervical cord atrophy above the injury, length of post-traumatic myelomalacia and the amount of volume coverage of lumbosacral enlargement by the stimulation electrode array.

Chronic endoplasmic reticulum stress resulting from misfolding of the visual pigment rhodopsin (RHO) can lead to loss of rod photoreceptors, which initiates retinitis pigmentosa, characterized initially by diminished nighttime and peripheral vision. Cone photoreceptors depend on rods for glucose transport, which the neurons use for assembly of visual pigment-rich structures; as such, loss of rods also leads to a secondary loss of cone function, diminishing high-resolution color vision utilized for tasks including reading, driving, and facial recognition. If dysfunctional rods could be maintained to continue to serve this secondary cone preservation function, it might benefit patients with retinitis pigmentosa, but the mechanisms by which rods are removed are not fully established.

Purpose: Fibroproliferation and excess deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) are the pathologic hallmarks of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a chronic progressive disorder with high mortality and suboptimal treatment options. Although the etiologic mechanisms responsible for the development and progression of IPF remain unclear, cell-ECM interactions and growth factors are considered important. Cilengitide is a cyclic RGD pentapeptide with anti-angiogenic activity that targets αvβ3, αvβ5 and α5β1, integrins known to mediate cell-ECM interactions and activate the pro-fibrotic growth factor Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGF-β).

Exposure to alkylanilines found in tobacco smoke and indoor air is associated with risk of bladder cancer. Genetic factors significantly influence the metabolism of arylamine carcinogens and the toxicological outcomes that result from exposure. We utilized nucleotide excision repair (NER)-deficient immortalized human fibroblasts to examine the effects of human N-acetyltransferase 1 (NAT1), CYP1A2, and common rapid (NAT2*4) and slow (NAT2*5B or NAT2*7B) acetylator human N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) haplotypes on environmental arylamine and alkylaniline metabolism.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that are involved in various biological processes, including apoptosis, by regulating gene expression. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that ethanol-induced downregulation of miR-135a contributes to ethanol-induced apoptosis in neural crest cells (NCCs) by upregulating Siah1 and activating the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/p53 pathway. We found that treatment with ethanol resulted in a significant decrease in miR-135a expression in both NCCs and zebrafish embryos.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) disrupts autonomic circuits and impairs synchronistic functioning of the autonomic nervous system, leading to inadequate cardiovascular regulation. Individuals with SCI, particularly at or above the sixth thoracic vertebral level (T6), often have impaired regulation of sympathetic vasoconstriction of the peripheral vasculature and the splanchnic circulation, and diminished control of heart rate and cardiac output. In addition, impaired descending sympathetic control results in changes in circulating levels of plasma catecholamines, which can have a profound effect on cardiovascular function.
