Introduction: Fahr disease and Fahr syndrome represent clinical entities that result in diffuse intracranial brain calcification, either by way of genetic mutation in the case of the former or by secondary endocrine dysfunction in the latter.

Case Report: We present a case of a middle-aged male with undiagnosed Fahr syndrome, identified during evaluation for symptoms of an acute posterior circulation cerebrovascular accident.

Conclusion: Fahr syndrome is a clinical constellation of symptoms and radiographic findings often seen in late-stage hypoparathyroidism.

Electronic address:

Immunosuppression commonly disrupts the homeostasis of mutated normal skin, leading to widespread skin dysplasia and field cancerization. However, the immune system's role in maintaining the normal state of mutated tissues remains uncertain. Herein, we demonstrate that T cell immunity to cutaneotropic papillomaviruses promotes the homeostasis of ultraviolet radiation-damaged skin.

Falls pose a significant health risk for older adults, often due to balance disorders and decreased mobility. The ability to perform sit-to-stand transfers, which involve squatting, is crucial for daily independence. Incorporating squats into exercise routines can enhance lower body strength, reduce fall risk, and improve overall quality of life.

Prenatal ethanol exposure can cause a broad range of abnormalities in newborns known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Despite significant progress in understanding the disease mechanisms of FASD, there remains a strong global need for effective therapies. To evaluate the therapeutic potential of sulforaphane (SFN), an active compound extracted from cruciferous vegetables, in preventing FASD, ethanol-exposed zebrafish embryos were pretreated, co-treated, or post-treated with various concentrations of SFN.

Institution-Wide Moral Distress Among Nurses.

J Nurs Adm

November 2024

Author Affiliations: Nurse Researcher (Dr Booth), Office of Professional Practice Education, Nursing Research, and Nursing Excellence, University of Louisville Health; and Staff Nurse (Dobson), Surgical Intensive Care Unit, University of Louisville Hospital, Kentucky; Professor and PhD Program Director (Dr Christian), School of Nursing, University of Kansas; and Assistant Professor (Dr Clark) and Assistant Professor and Biostatistician (Dr Sha), School of Nursing, University of Louisville, Kentucky.

Article Synopsis
  • Moral distress is defined as the struggle to act ethically due to limitations placed on healthcare professionals, particularly nurses.
  • A study at a trauma center found that inadequate staffing, resources, and administrative support were the main factors contributing to this distress among 97 participating nurses.
  • The findings suggest that addressing these issues could reduce moral distress and intent to leave the profession, with younger nurses experiencing higher levels of distress compared to older colleagues.

Article Synopsis
  • - Liver is heavily impacted by alcohol misuse, with conditions ranging from simple fat accumulation to severe liver cirrhosis, and alcohol-associated hepatitis has a high risk of short-term mortality.
  • - Current research on alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) often overlooks important aspects, focusing mainly on short-term survival instead of broader issues related to alcohol-use disorder.
  • - The authors emphasize the existing gaps in understanding ALD, describe ongoing clinical trials, and outline future research priorities for better treatment and management strategies.

This study investigates the dynamic interactions between physiological systems during competitive gaming, utilizing a Network Physiology approach. By examining the physiological responses of a gamer with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder playing a real-time strategy game, we explore the relationships and temporal lag effects between pupil dilation, skin temperature, and heart rate. Our findings highlight the interconnectedness of these physiological systems and demonstrate how different physiological states are associated with unique patterns of network interactions.

Article Synopsis
  • Bladder cancer is closely linked to smoking, making it crucial for urologists to offer smoking cessation counseling to reduce cancer risk and improve patient health.
  • A study analyzed 435 patients with asymptomatic hematuria, finding that only 24.2% quit or reduced smoking after one year, with no significant improvement seen from counseling (33.3% quit with counseling vs. 22.8% without).
  • The overall low rate of counseling documentation (14.2%) highlights the need for increased efforts in supporting smoking cessation among patients.

Menopause, epicardial adiposity and preserved ejection fraction heart failure.

Int J Cardiol

November 2024

Section of Cardiology, John W. Deming Department of Medicine, Tulane University School of Medicine, 1430 Tulane Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70112, United States of America. Electronic address:

Postmenopausal women are overrepresented in the preserved ejection heart failure population. Expansion of visceral and epicardial adipose tissue during the menopause transition leads to local and low-grade systemic inflammation that in turn contributes to left ventricular concentric remodeling, diastolic dysfunction and the development and progression of preserved ejection fraction. In contrast to visceral adipose tissue imaging, epicardial adipose tissue can be inexpensively imaged on low radiation coronary calcium score computerized tomography examination.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess long-term device-related reoperations in women over 65 who underwent sacral neuromodulation (SNM) for conditions like overactive bladder, fecal incontinence, and urinary retention over an 8-year period.
  • The research analyzed data from over 32,000 women, revealing a total reoperation rate of 43% within 8 years, with the majority being for neuro-electrode or implantable pulse generator (IPG) issues.
  • Staged SNM procedures were linked to a lower risk of reoperation, suggesting this approach may be more effective in minimizing the need for further surgical interventions.

(MT), a construct linked to high-stress performance, is predominantly studied via self-assessment in cross-sectional designs. In the firefighting context, where no dedicated MT instrument exists, the Sports Mental Toughness Questionnaire (SMTQ) and the Military Training Mental Toughness Inventory (MTMTI) have been used. However, their reliability and concurrent validity remain unexamined.

  • Corticosteroid injections can cause negative side effects like increased blood sugar and decreased bone density, yet lower doses may provide similar benefits as higher ones.
  • The American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, along with other societies, created practice guidelines focusing on injection safety, efficacy, and adverse events from corticosteroid use in chronic pain management.
  • The final guidelines, which were developed through expert reviews and strong consensus, cover specific areas such as nerve blocks and joint injections to ensure safe and effective treatment protocols.

Personal protective equipment impacts firefighters' anaerobic fitness.

Occup Med (Lond)

July 2024

Human Performance Laboratory, Department of Health Promotion and Clinical Practice, Barry University, Miami, FL, USA.

Background: Personal protective equipment (PPE) is vital for firefighters' safety and effectiveness during daily operations. However, concerns have emerged about its potential impact on firefighters' anaerobic fitness (AF), which is crucial for their operational readiness. The Physical Ability Test (PAT) is used to assess readiness, but there is inconsistency among fire departments regarding whether PAT is conducted with full PPE or regular exercise clothing.

Cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) results in significant sensorimotor impairments below the injury level, notably in the upper extremities (UEs), impacting daily activities and quality of life. Regaining UE function remains the top priority for individuals post-cervical SCI. Recent advances in understanding adaptive plasticity within the sensorimotor system have led to the development of novel non-invasive neurostimulation strategies, such as spinal cord transcutaneous stimulation (scTS), to facilitate UE motor recovery after SCI.

Background: Operative management of midfoot Charcot arthropathy often involves an extended midfoot arthrodesis with intramedullary bolts for fixation, a method called "beaming." Recently intramedullary nails have been introduced for the same indication, presumably providing stronger fixation. This study compares midfoot fusion nails to bolts with regard to stiffness and compressive ability.
